trump attempted to steal the 2020 election. Everyone knows this. The evidence is overwhelming and if had not been successful at delaying the trial trump would be in prison and the US would be prospering.
Some of the blame should fall on Merritt Garland for slow-walking the investigation and indictment. I presume he, like Mitch McConnell, thought Trump was politically dead after Jan 6th and thus there was no reason not to go slowly.
This reminds me of a joke I saw on facebook. 2 MAGAs die and meet God in the afterlife. He says he'll answer any 1 question they ask. The first guy asks "How did the Dems steal the 2020 election?" God replies, "They didn't. Joe Biden won legitimately." The 2nd MAGA whispers to the first "the conspiracy runs even deeper than we thought!"

That's always been what "cvil war" looked like to these people.
It's not a military coup or half the country declaring independence. Its their excuse to start the mass killings of anyone they don't like.
