• One of the most confusing things I’ve ever heard in my life

I grew up in the deep south. Allow me to explain.

Racists will often use the n-word slur to describe anyone they deem lazy or uneducated. So because they've also used the racial slur against folks that aren't black, they can claim they're not actually racist. While still focusing most of their hate on PoC.

White southerner here, I can confirm this. If I had a nickel for every time I heard, “It means ‘lazy person’…”

Why not just call lazy people lazy like everyone else?

Because they're friggin' racist. It's not rocket surgery.

Need to learn rocket science before you can perform rocket surgery.

This cracked me the fuck up

If they weren't racist, it'd just be water under the fridge.

I hate to say “atodaso,” but fuckin ATODASO

because they're too lazy to do so

Because it has everything to do with hate, they don’t mind white trailer trash, they don’t mind lazy white folks begging for money on the side of the road. They hate anyone person that doesn’t look like them.

I'm sure they also mind those people, but they can't easily identify them in other settings so the hate doesn't follow them.

They hate non-white folks all the time.

I was told it meant lazy/sorry and that I would most likely find more white people that would fit the description than anyone else.  I was also told not to actually use it because there are much better words to be used for that purpose anyways.

    You were lied to.

Possibly by someone who wasn't even being truthful with themselves.

Either way, I have by nature of proximity, considered calling more white people than anyone else.  Along with a plethora of other words that we don't say in polite society.

I’m not even from the south and this is how I had it explained to me by older kids when I was in elementary school. That there could be white n-words because it was about low quality rather than race.

When I was in high school, a white guy in my class dressed up as Tupac in blackface for a dress up day, and explained this distinction to me with a smile on his face sitting next to me in class. I grew up in the Cleveland, Ohio area. Absolutely disgusting.

Now on my experience, after living in Texas and being shocked at this word being common language, it was NEVER used on white people except as a joking insult.

It is very obvious that it was used here as: not all black people are n words (They love that chris rock bit). It's the trope of the model minority they use to explain that they arent racist, just judgemental.

"N word lover" is usually the way they describe non racist people.

They do the gay DnD together and the steam room rallies

Sometimes racism isn’t about race lmao

Though there are of course plenty of exceptions, the vast majority of racists are basically just total fucking losers who have nothing to be proud of in their life. That's why turning to racial superiority is so appealing - it allows them to feel like they belong to an elite, desirable demographic without ever having to actually earn or achieve anything.

True, it's about in-group tribalism. People will always make exceptions to consider someone part of their in-group if they know the person and like them.

Ugh. Look up the story. He wasn't there to be KKK. . He instilled guilt in them. It's a crazy story

My father would say “a credit to their race”. My dad is pos

His name is Father Reverend Uncle Ruckus

    No relation

Read up on Darryl Davis, he is a very cool guy.

    Even the third time around?

Clayton Bigsby has entered the room

KKK: "I've got more respect for that black man than I do for you white n****rs."

Yes you watched the video too.

  • Since OP didn’t bother to tell you who the African-America gentleman was in this video, that’s Daryl Davis. If you don’t know who he is, I encourage you to read up on him. Our currently world needs more Daryl Davis’

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daryl_Davis

Love this quote from fom his wiki page:

"What I have come to find to be the greatest and most effective and successful weapon that we can use, known to man, to combat such adversaries as ignorance, racism, hatred, violence, is also the least expensive weapon, and the one that is the least used by Americans. That weapon is called communication."

Wish it were still true today. You can present facts, with video evidence to someone these days, and they'll still stick their fingers in their ears and cry "FAAAAAKE!"

I don't think Daryl Davis's method of communication was trying to debate them. It's more about being a person they're supposed to hate and gaining their respect anyways just by being friendly.

You've never been able to debate someone out of racism, that part hasn't changed.

See also: how YouTuber Poudii and "the most racist man in america" became friends

correct he never made it about debating them. just talked an listened until they found more and more things they had in common; eventually the klan members would just see the evil in what they were doing and walk away from that life

didnt he befriend multiple high ranking kkk members (like grand wizard lvl) n they ended up giving him their cloaks? aka signifying their leaving the kkk

yeah and he consistently did it with no confrontation/debate; just showed them again and again that he could be trusted…one of the worlds best listeners. The Klansmen really just talked themselves right out of their hateful ways. Beautiful thing.

it really is beautiful (and brave in maaany diff facets). i don’t fault ppl for not being able to do what Daryl Davis has done, n continues to do, but the world could def use more ppl like this lovely man

That also doesn't work, republicans would just label attempts to be kind as wokeness or soft/weak/beta/soyboy

Ok but to be clear.. thats trying to prove someone wrong. Davis doesnt really do that. He goes for just being friendly and letting that friendship be a way forward to reduce hatred. Very much feelings over facts.

It still works irl, communicating well isn't what the internet is best at.  It was absolutely a mistake for everyone to be able to communicate with everyone.  Anything past 100 people and we turn into animals.

I was kinda assuming it was him, as I've read about that man plenty of times but since there's not really much context for this clip it was hard to tell.

Dude is a legitimately wonderful man and has done a lot of good for the world. For other people that might not know he befriended KKK members and got them to leave the KKK.

I met Daryl at a Panera in Aspen Hill, Maryland. He was there meeting with someone who turned out to be a KKK member. It honestly surprised me, because you really can’t tell who someone is just by looking at them, they blend into everyday society. Overall, Daryl was cool, and the situation itself was just unexpected.

Ah crap was he from around there?

    A fucking incredible human being.

He spoke at my college in the mid 2000s. My wife worked for the school paper and did a story on him. She also hired him a few years ago for a webinar.

Thank you, that man has done invaluable work for Americans. He should be named proudly.

Thanks for sharing this. I just assumed this was Kanye West situation lol. A nutter sucking up to fascists and racists.

Glad to see that isn't the case.

Daryl is a useful tool for bigots. He's used as a character witness for the racist assholes to get reduced sentences and then go on to commit more crimes. The only source for the number of people he's "convinced to leave the KKK" are himself and he certainly seems to surround himself with members who step away and then come right back to the racist group. He credits himself with dismantling the KKK in Maryland, but the KKK is still active in Maryland. When a racist talks about having a black friend, they might be talking about someone like Daryl.

Please post sources for the information you are presenting.

The only "sources" Daryl has are his own words. He claims to have shut down the KKK in Maryland, yet also paid the bail for a Maryland KKK grand wizard who oversaw 12 chapters and testified on his behalf after the man fired a gun at people while hurling racial slurs at the Unite the Right rally. If it was shut down, why is Daryl out there trying to get lighter sentences for its violent KKK members? Here are what Daryl's friends have to say about him when the camera isn't on them in the court house. Clearly he's having a major success in winning over racists!

I’ve been following Daryl for over 20 years. I’ve heard of some men who he has befriended in the past fall back into clan activity, which is not unheard of so you’re not saying anything surprising there.

However, you made several accusations in regards to Daryl, basically calling him an Uncle Tom of sorts. I asked you to give me sources for your accusations and the only source you were able to provide was an archived page from a Confederate heritage advocacy blog bad mouthing Daryl.

I remain unconvinced of your allegations. Just because you speak does not give your words the validity of truth. We are not the ignorant fools you are probably use to dealing with where ever it is you choose to lurk on the internet. If you are going to make claims here, you better be able to back them up with credible sources and you sir, are not a credible source.

Since this is the extent at which you can prove the words you have spoken here, you are no longer worth keeping in the ongoing conversation and as such, i will no longer be acknowledging you or your comments moving forward. Have a nice day.

Everytime I’m the one to make an informative post with context I’m accused of karma-farming by random skank bots.. so have at it… the kids will learn.

Furthermore I think what you mean to say is that one day with hard work in forming cross-class, cross-race solidarity like he does, then we’ll have a world in which Daryl Davis doesn’t need to talk hundreds of poor people out of hating other poor people for rich people’s political power.

Wait people accuse you of karma farming if you post something informative, but then what’s this post about? Sure isn’t informative. In fact, I’d call it misleading since you failed to proved context resulting in people coming to the wrong conclusions. You can see it for yourself up and down this comment section.

A lot of subreddits require submission statements, so a lot of karma farming bots do it by default. If you see a submission statement in one of the bigger subreddits, it's probably a bot.

That might actually explain it.. I’m a bio-bot for militant left wing propaganda.. so maybe I just confuse the kids.

Lately people be getting pissy and conspiratorial when OP makes a first comment.. idk why..

I thought it was uncle ruckus

  • Daryl Davis exemplifies how exposure is the true key to tackling bigotry. I know he got some flack from militant folks, but the proof is in the individual minds he changed and hopefully the exponential affect those folks had in their communities.

Why do we always need more of the chill good guys? Why is never that we need less of the shitty dudes.

    Why cant we have both?

Yeah man, he fixed our racism and these guys definitely didnt go back to being actively racist and helping the racist fascist party take over the country.

I mean, Daryl Davis has actually and literally gotten a lot of members to leave the Klan.

What have you done to tackle racism, InfoBarf?

    You're so wise and cool.

  • Darryl Davis, the goat. Boogie woogie artist, sings and plays piano. In his spare time he converses with kkk members to convince them to drop their membership. He has a collection of hoods and other kkk swag that former members have given him after they quit the klan. I met him after a show he did in the Baltimore area. Nicest guy in the world, he is a force for good in this world.

  • The hatred in the eyes of that guy on the right in the flat cap is chilling.

  • Everytime this gets posted people immediately go to the uncle ruckus jokes but he is a saint of a man who's trying to get people to come together.

  • Its almost like he based his opinion of this guy on his character....

  • If you havent heard of daryl davis go check him out .. in order for something sooo rooted in evil to change you must attack it on all fronts.. this dude is definitely doing a inside job.. somehow hes convinced plenty of white dudes to leave the clan and renounce their racism . Shit is wild af

  • *confused applause*

  • Ight...I didn't need to hear it 3x 😂

  • Lol who calls themselves a grand wizard. What a loser.

  • The enjoyment of the company of one black man does not make the clan suddenly stop their racism. They just exclude him and continue their hatred of every other one. He would never send one of his family into that tent without them knowing it was his family. Because they didn’t dance for them enough to make them one of the good ones first. It’s not about making them respect YOU. It’s about them having no respect for any black person without an offering of fealty first.

  • yeah the klan members thought they were just sorta tolerating “one of the good ones”…Daryl Davis knew what he was doing though, his goal was never to kiss up to them. he convinced over 200 klan members to give up their life in the kkk and throw away their robes. absolute legend of a man.

  • Daryl Davis is fucking awesome. Look him up

  • Condilingus RICE!

  • Idk if this is the same guy but it looks like it. There's a story about that black guy actually..he's not KKK. He hung out with a KKk until the leader stopped thinking the way he did about black people or people in general.. Then eventually he got the guy to quit the KKK. Or something like that. Daryl Davis.

Idk the whole story but he wasn't there to join .

  • Is he the real life Clayton Bigsby?

    No he's an infiltrator

No that white guy is less aware bc he actually has sight.

  • As some already mentioned his name, the black man in the video is Daryl Davis. He single-handedly convinced more than 200 KKK members to leave the clan.

He was in Joe Rogan's podcast as well, he explains how he got in contact with the clan members and helped them leave the clan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGTQ0Wj6yIg

  • If low key get this t shirt.

  • What did we learn today class?… the hard E-R can be used for yt people as well

  • What year was this?

  • ... uncle Ruckus?

  • Daryl Davis showed that we are all brothers, God Bless him forever.

  • Damn…real life Uncle Ruckus

  • That had to be thee most powerful statement made by a single person in the history of existence. It has enough power to stop even Jesus himself in his tracks and say wait a minute

  • People nowadays can learn a lot from that man.

  • Downvoted for that dumbass broccoli headed post title.

Mods, please ban the obvious bot account who is spamming this sort of nonsense here.

  • Anybody else notice that "My One Black Friend" is always the same friend to all the people that only have one black friend to prove they aren't racist(enough).

  • this feels like an onion article

  • Daryl Davis is the epitome of one of the "good ones". Anybody who thinks this guy is admirable needs to be looked at sideways. None of his bullshit about being nice to the racists has ever worked. All the people he has claimed to "save" from racism are still fucking racist. His claims about getting X amount of people out the Klan were false.

I swear, every time this dude shows up reddit just shows it's ass. The only people who like this dude are far right racists and the "malcolm x" type liberals who posted a black square on Instagram and treat anti-racism like a hobby.

You’re going to need to source your claims.

Naw. You accepted the "fact" that he got 200 people to leave with zero sources. Why you raising the bar now? Where is the actual evidence for this? Besides, you can't prove a negative like that. Surely the evidence must come from the existence of said reformed KKK members. Who are they? It's a fact that Daryl Davis will testify on behalf of and even pay bail for violent racist criminals. Some of them go on to continue being racist criminals after he stands up for them. Seems like his actual work is in getting violent racists a lighter sentencing.

  • It's literally impossible to be racist if you have a multi-cultural friend group. I'm pretty sure that guy quit the KKK years later and gave the black dude all his gear.

  • I think this guy is a fool personally, most of what he has done is hang out with racists and give the KKK more legitimacy. He claims to have been responsible for some of them denouncing the Klan but it's hard to say how true that is.

The thing is he was around at a time when KKK membership was rapidly declining anyways, people had been dropping out pretty much since the association to that group had become known as largely traitorous.

Once the Civil Rights movement happened they were in terminal decline and they viewed a person like Daryl with good intentions as a way to stay relevant.

Show me the timeline of kkk membership youre working from. Google says the rapid decline was in the 20s. There was a decline after civil rights in the 60s but daryl didnt start til mid 80s. Youre fulla shit

Its peaks was in the 20s

So 40 years before daryl was born, 60 before he started doin his thing

    Im missing your point

It stated declining in the 1920s and the Civil Rights movement largely eviscerated what was left. Associating Daryl positively with the decline of the org is weird.

How is what he did giving them more legitimacy?

you're missing the point, his mission was to prove even these idiots can see past color.

Bro everyone knows that with Uncle Toms, he doesn't need to literally stand next them to them for proof. They only see him as a way to say "We don't hate blacks, only the bad ones. Look at good old Daryl over here. The dog that doesn't bark. "

    Woooooshhh

    Right over your head
