• Democracy in the workplace is coming. Choo Choo magats, we're going to shove it down your weak throats.

  • Yet another Rupert Murdoch outlet trying to label "socialist" as a dirty word.

It's shameful that investigative journalism has been pushed aside by sensationalism that "drives clicks".

I mean, socialism has such a stench on it people like to call themselves democratic socialists as if it's a different flavor of socialism.

    It's not really socialism.

Democratic socialism is the idea that socialism should be implemented through existing democratic levers instead of by revolution.

It isn't a different ideology, it's a different method of getting there.

Democratic socialism functions under capitalism. One of the main characteristics of socialism is public ownership of the means of production.

Democratic socialism is just capitalism with a strong social welfare system. Better than what the US has, as an example, but not actually socialism.

Don't get me wrong--I'd be happy to live in a democratic socialist system but I would still want to go further left.

You are describing social democracy, which sounds very similar, but is extremely different than Democratic Socialism.

Does democratic socialism function under capitalism?

Social democracy functions under capitalism, it's the Nordic model. There's a lot to like about that model.

You're right. I was confusing the two systems. I apologize.

I would be happy with either, but social democracy is easier to achieve.

    Thanks for straightening me out!

Easy to do, they sound very similar and Mamdani is a Democratic Socialist. Would he and other Democratic Socialists be happy with installing social democracy?

I think so, but only as a step towards actual socialism.

The difference is both how and what, not just how. Democratic socialism works to alleviate the suffering caused under capitalism, but still upholds it by working within capitalism. Our “democracy” is intrinsically linked with capitalism. So working with electoral politics is fundamentally limited.

I think you are blending Democratic Socialism with Social Democracy.

  • Would like to see some communists win a few seats so the social democrats could see what it means to push around capitalists

  • Imagine working at the New York Post and using the word "socialist" like it's an insult.

"Oooh, ya, this will show them! Gonna call them a no good dirty socialist! NAUGHTY NAUGHTY!"

I mean I guess we should just be grateful they didn't say communist at least, right? :P
