this is a 2 hour long video made by a youtuber named marlowww who happens to be one of the best, if not THE best PVPer in minecraft. this whole video details the various forms of harassment and vitriol she received online by men who loathed her for daring to be an excellent female player. this video is a year old and i found out about marlowww only recently but i feel so bad for her and i feel so proud for her for continuing to make content and play despite recieving this much hate.
it makes me so mad that female gamers face issues like this all the time. men claim they want a gamer girlfriend but anytime they encounter a female gamer, they ask her what games she plays and if she actually plays "real" games or not. which to them are fps games, horror games, and GTA. and when these gamers find out a woman is in the lobby of the FPS game theyre playing, they yell insults and slurs at her because of her gender. (this is very common for games like valorant and COD). and men look down on women who dont have the same hobbies they do. theres no way for winning for a woman, is there?
after acting this way with women, is it any wonder that they dont have gamer girlfriends or a girlfriend at all? they do everything in their power to push away women who actually do play games, or like literally any woman tbh. im utterly convinced men are not attracted to real women. they just want a fantastical woman who is perfect in every way, shape, and form while not doing even the bare minimum to fix themselves.
I love video games and really wanted to participate in competitive shooters and MOBAs, but men made it virtually impossible.
Male-dominated environments are naturally toxic, but the moment you get on comms with a female voice they turn the abuse and griefing up to eleven. Even your own teammates will sabotage you.
Props to the women who persevered in spite of all that. I certainly couldn't.
same. i used to play fps games a lot when i was younger but i could never use my voice and i had to pretend to be a guy to actually make friends. at some point i realized i didnt fw that at all so i stopped playing them even tho i loved them. it sucks how misogyny ruined fps games for me forever. now i wont play them at all till i find a hg to play them with honestly. thats why im really proud of marlowww for not backing down
and in the video, marlowww talks about how she recieved the most backstabbing and hatred from her "friends" when she got better than them. its absolutely horrible for women out there.
I've started doing Vtuber streams and I worry a lot about harassment if I start attracting a large audience. I want to get back into Pokemon TCG irl too, but I dread having to deal with toxic men. I'm hoping it won't be too bad since Pokemon is a family friendly series.
I'm mostly into single-player games anyway, but the stories about how women are harassed in online multiplayer had destroyed any interest I might have had in ever giving it a shot.
I've lost interest in a lot of fandoms I used to like because they were dominated by toxic men. Female-dominated fandoms are so much more pleasant to participate in. The worst is when there's a fandom that's evenly split like Hatsune Miku. I just want to enjoy the cute singing robot girl, but the fandom is ruined by men posting porny fan art. It's just exhausting to deal with.
it’s the same vibe as them whining about women not working in construction/trades/military etc and leaving them the “hard jobs”. women are avoiding those fields not bc it’s “hard” but because like every predominantly male environments it’s a fucking rotted hell on earth for women. they just ruin everything they touch
I had a way milder experience, but it still hit the same nerve. I’m part of a male-heavy aviation community, and when I shared a collectible fragment from an SR-71 (with full provenance, legit source, everything), people started questioning if it was real. No one was outright rude, but it was all very “are you sure?” and side-eyes.
Meanwhile, a guy shared some aircraft skin tags he got off eBay and Facebook with zero proof, and everyone immediately believed him and hyped it up. It felt like I had to prove myself just to be taken seriously, and I don’t think I’d have gotten the same reaction if I weren’t openly identifying as a woman.
Reminds me of an article written by a engineer who was a woman and always thought she had to be ready to back up everything she said with proof. Being a woman was instantly to be doubted.
I made a reference to Leni Riefenstahl in a thread about how Trump is using a.i. and someone thought I was talking about a man
No this is absolutely correct. Video games are probably one of the main interests m*n have, but god forbid a woman has it, because if you even show a hint of femininity in 99% of games you will be harassed, have your games thrown, and probably your whole family tree cursed by some moid drooling over his keyboard in his moms basement
i just had to leave the gta online discord server bc of the amount of sexual harassment i've endured.
i am also a graffiti artist and i had to isolate myself in that community, too, because it's mostly terrible men.
Didn't know abt it. It's a crazy story that many of us could relate. If you beat a guy in gaming prepare for a toxic response and threats.

I think they just want a woman who totally understands why he's gaming for 16 hours a day and who swoons over him completing trivial tasks that the woman obviously tried a 1,000 times and failed at.
id give you an award if i could. you nailed it.
they dont want a woman to share their interests they just want a woman to coddle them and tell them they arent losers
In general, a lot of men are insecure (a lot of PEOPLE are insecure, but that's not what this post is about). Insecure men feel personally attacked/threatened by female excellence, especially if it's in a "typically male" arena. They fear feeling like or being perceived as "less of a man" because they are bested by a woman at something they're "supposed to" be better at. (Source: I'm a female engineer who likes cars, weightlifting, and power tools.)
This is so true oh my. I mountain bike and literally every time I go to one of the more intense places for it (bigger jumps/drops) a man will say some kind of disrespectful thing to me. Or get mad if I pass him. It’s basically guaranteed a man will be either creepy or weird. Many of them are nice but there’s always one. Then they complain no women bike…. Like ok man
What a bunch of sick people. I'm at 12 min in the video, where these madman made terrorist threats getting police involved. WTF And these were people responsible for administrating the community as I understood. When you have moderators without integrity, it kills the community.
I am happy that I didn't have to deal with such men, and had positive experiences with my gaming partners.
I've seen a lot of memes recently where a man has a serious hobby (ex. skateboarding) he's really good at, and his gf/wife does the same thing but is much less skilled. It's supposed to be cute but it raises alarms for me considering ive never seen one where the woman is the seriously skilled one and the man is just a beginner/casual.
It's like "aww so cute this woman is trying a big boy activity to bond with her man :) she'll never be as good but it's cute to watch her try :)" call me cynical if you want but i think something's up
You have examples?
don’t have the link but iirc it’s a small TikTok trend of “when they have the same hobby as you but at different skill levels”
Oh, it's TikTok. No wonder I missed that. I believed you but I wanted to see how bad it was.
I can't imagine how it must be like to be under this sort of harassment, toxicity, misogyny, threats and attacks for six years. She must be the strongest person I've ever seen for continuing despite all that. And in fact she is not just continuing to play, she is doing so much more for the community as well, she currently runs the PvP ranking system on her own and is working on more improvements! The last I've heard of her was that she wants to focus on content creation more, saying that it's almost irresponsible if she didn't.
There had unfortunately been even more hate directed at her since that video. Just a few weeks ago, someone made a video accusing Marlow of cheating and abusing power. By now these accusation videos are all over YouTube, and everyone is saying she's cheating, and on top of that, oppressing the community and being a man in disguise, again. Some top players defended her, and people are saying it's because they are afraid of being banned if they didn't defend her. In fact, a retired top player (who was her friend) just returned, and some people are literally saying that was to divert attention away from her. This needs to stop
This. One guy was talking excitedly about how he met a pretty woman at a gaming event and how he was impressed that she was 'genuinely' into it and 'actually' knew her stuff.
He couldn't understand why she wasn't interested in hanging out with him.
They're the ones who harass women and gatekeep spaces and then wonder why they can't find women who are into the same stuff they're
into
