Can you tell me your experience with it? Mine is next week

I haven't been called for bloods even this the video on this page says they will take your bloods prior to the CS

I don't have any appointment for it in my HSE app either

Apparently I have a call with the anesthetic team tomorrow (also not in the HSE app)

Maybe I am overthinking it?

If you had a planned CS in Coombe how was it organised for you?

  • I came in the day before and got bloods and they gave me the drinks to drink the following morning. Only took 20 mins. We actually didn’t get time the next morning for the drinks as was all quite rushed when I got there. However, I had the most incredible experience ever. Everyone was so calm and nice. I literally felt nothing, everyone talks about pressure and movement but I didn’t even feel that and had zero pain afterwards. Best day of my life no question and would do it again in a heartbeat.

Interesting. When did they called you for the bloods? My CS is planned for Monday but I haven't been called for bloods yet and I'm not sure they will do them on Sunday...

I think they rang me the Friday to come in Monday afternoon, section Tuesday. However I will say I’ve had loads of friends who didn’t have to go in the day before for a section. Often they will just do it that morning in the Coombe. Everyone thought that I was going in was unusual so don’t worry if they don’t call

  • Can be done morning of as well, don’t worry

  • Breath, you’ll be okay. I got my bloods done 24hrs before my csection in waterford. They have to be valid for 72hrs!

  • I had an elective section last Feb in the Coombe and same as post above- I had bloods done the day before and had a long chat with anesthetist just after bloods.

  • Mine was brought forward by a month with 24hrs notice so it could be different but I was sent home from my clinic appointments to get my bags, had a shower food and to come back that evening, i fasted from that night and I had bloods done both the night before and again the next morning, when it’s planned you present at the door for anaesthetics and check in at the desk. They do a few little checks on you and you get a bed and if someone needs an emergency c section they are done first so you can’t really get a guaranteed time, just have your partner there early to be safe. I was given a paper gown thing and the smallest disposable knickers I’ve ever seen so I didn’t put them on I wore my own and they brought me to the theatre area and they were so friendly and nice you sign the forms and they chat to you ask a few questions and then it’s time to go in. Mine was completely different to most people inside theatre due to underlying conditions that I have so I wouldn’t be able to give a guide on what to expect in the operating theatre. I couldn’t praise them highly enough they saved both my baby and I on two occasions and it is the best maternity hospital in the country for high risk pregnancies. The obstetrics, nurses, consultants and anaesthetics team are amazing, the anaesthetic team ask some questions to see what type of anaesthetic you need check your airways etc and if you are on medication what way to take it before surgery have a list of your medications and doses to tell them etc.

Thanks. I had an emergency CS before so i'm not too worried about what happens in theatre, been there done that :) Only new thing now is that it's planned

Me too my first was emergency and I opted for planned this time. Don’t stress over it they have a lab on site that can give them the blood test results in an hour or two and if you are going in the day or night before they do bloods in the ward, best of luck!

  • I have one planned for Tuesday, was in with my OB the other day and he just sent me down to drop in on anesthesia to have them run me through the plan and I’m to come in on Monday for bloods they need bloods done within 72 hours of your section. I’ve been given a rough time to come in but they have said that will be confirmed on Monday as if they are extremely busy it may need to be a later time to come in. If yours is Monday it might be worth dropping in tomorrow and just asking at admissions to be seen or calling the call desk asking them if you need to come in to get bloods etc

  • I had an elective CS just over a year ago in the Coombe and didn’t do bloods at all…I had a call with the anaesthetist the day before and was told then what time to come in at etc., got the drinks when I arrived in that morning.

It was almost too relaxed - I was really worried that I was being forgotten about or something, but all was fine!

Were you private, because I had a CS and was a private patient and had no blood test the day before.

  • Why do you need bloods before a CS?

Generally speaking, bloods before surgery is normal enough. They'd do a blood count to check for anemia, if infections are present or if there are any issues with clotting. They might check for liver or kidney function. Blood glucose levels. They're important to anticipate if any problems will arise during or after surgery

Oh interesting! Had a CS a year ago and no blood test the day before but maybe they drew my blood that morning when they put the cannula in.
