Hey Everyone!

I've been pottering for about 8 months now, and I want to know where I can go to learn about kilns and firing them

I'm fully aware about the power needs of an electric kiln, but whats the cost of running one like? Are they affordable/reasonable at all? I see people on socials who get one and have to wonder if they are actually cost effective at all?

What about gas kilns, vs electric

any pointers at knowledgeable sources would be great just wanting to get me head around them

or if this isnt the right sub point me where to go!

Im based in Aus, if that helps.

  • I’m sure there are sites or resources for this, but electric kilns are easy to use Ime. I bought mine and learned from the manual and asking questions here or on Facebook when I need to.

  • They are far less costly to use than you might think. I have a large kiln and it costs me $13 USD to do a glaze firing.

  • My cost is about $5.00 per firing.
From Google: Calculate Cost: (Kilowatts) x (Program Hours) x (Duty Cycle) x (Cost per kWh). Use .5 for duty cycle to start with. Google “How to determine duty cycle of a kiln” for details.

Listen to this one, OP. Electricity rates vary so wildly from place to place that any mention of specific cost can be considered anecdotal. And obviously, the kiln that you are firing will also be a primary factor in how much power you'll draw.
