Hi! I just started experimenting with iron oxides and painted 3 layers of red, cobalt, and black oxides onto this bisque fired clay. I’d like to glaze on top with Koke White. Would the oxides still show through? I’ve included an example of how the oxides look with Koke White, but I’m not sure if they were applied before or after glazing.

  • I doubt any of us can guess whether the oxides are under or over. Make some tiles for testing it first. Or just go for it. You’ve got a 50/50 chance! I’m not familiar with Koke White glaze. I will tell you that a little bit of oxide goes a long way. Three coats was probably not necessary and the blue for sure will want to “spit” all over. Black too most likely.

Thanks for your reply! I’ll probably go for it and see what happens :-)

  • Red and Black Iron oxide will be brown. Cobalt oxide will be blue. If you put glaze over them likely those colors will show through somewhat. It depends how opaque that white is. It likely won't look like what you expect it to.

Thank you! I’m realizing now that this piece is not going to turn out the way I expected / wanted it to. Appreciate your help.
