• Cries in large capacity HDD prices

so lucky to grab couple of 20 TBs a few months back but fuck! 😩

can't wait for the day this big tech AI hoarding crashes so we can buy something once more.

It was still expensive before if making a NAS from scratch with redundancy but ye rip

i was building a nas and i had a 4TB i recovered from a old video survilance system and wanted to pick up another, i was like "a 4TB mechanical is HOW MUCH?"

im pissed off since a power spike killed a 12TB WD White drive i recovered from a USB HDD. and a new one is like 250€

I got a 14tb exos a couple months back for 200€ and thought "neat backup disk".

Now I've finally built my own homelab and would like to add thag disk, + ideally an identical one to set up raid, but noooooo, nothing comes even close to those prices anymore 🥲🥲

I got some good deals at serverpartdeals.com

Not in the US so not really useable for me :( tho we have something similar here in Germany

Can you share what you have in Germany?

No idea why I said Germany because the site is in the UK lol, brain malfunction. But even with the stupid fees to the EU, I got a pretty nice deal on a used server, way cheaper than I would get from my home country. It’s called bargainhardware, supposedly they were going to be selling from Ireland as well to private customers at some point but I’m not sure if that’s done yet

  • Asking for a friend, is it a pain in the ass to rip all your music?

i recommend soulseek or nicotine+, pink bot and blue bot on telegram for apple music and deezer.
also, if you have youtube playlists for music, i recommend using jdownloader2 to download them.
I built a small library of around 350 albums in flac quality so far

Can you get flac quality from YouTube?

not really no, and it's cumbersome to download. For flac i recommend soulseek or nicotine+ if you're on PC, if you are using your phone, i recommend the telegram bots, you can change their download quality to flac

Is DAB back? They started some invite only bs when they came back….

You can automate it easily enough by throwing a few hours into a server

That’s how I rip all my stuff. Jellyfin acts like an automated service and no one noticed it’s not skinned YTM

Nah, it's pretty simple. I copy album links from Qobuz and use https://doubledouble.top/ to download them. You can easily get high-res FLACs :)

I used to do that but eventually found out that just using soulseek is much faster.

I'm gonna look into soulseek soon. appreciate the suggestion!

Yea it is, especially if you have a huge library. Basically a time-consuming project.

I haven’t tried downloading my whole library yet, but you could probably subscribe to Apple Music for a month then use GAMDL to download the whole library in 256kbps DRM-free AAC. It’s quite fast too, especially when using the alternate downloader, but I’ve only tried it on a couple playlists. I got a Shortcut on my Mac where I can just share the link straight from Apple Music and it’ll download it to my DJ crate.

It's really nto, but it does kinda require to reset your mind to the old ways, focused on the album rather tahn individual songs. Which is a plus for me honestly, listening to whole albums is a more wholistic and (for me) better approach to music in general, but it does need some getting used to if you're used to spotify/youtube/apple music etc. I'm from the CD generation so it wasn't particularly hard for me but for younger people it can take some more deliberate recalibration.

  • Nope. Landlord is still alive 🌚🌚🌚

But at least we get content and more than streaming services so many movies and shows I have on my server aren’t available on streaming especially older shows from the 80s

Eh most of us are good people

No, no they're not. Being a landlord is inherently parasitic.

Oh yeah those late nights and holidays spent working for tenants is super parasitic.

    You know nothing little one

Oh no you have to work for the money you get.

Wow you're stupid. That's the problem here. We don't mind the work. You'll just whine tho and then be a hypocrite and scream bootstrapper at us when we tell YOU to work harder like we do/did

Poor people love to hate on landlords cause y’know, it’s our fault they have to rent and can’t just outright buy

    This but unironically

Lmfao I just checked your profile and you're in "socialist gaming"

Yeah your opinion matters here. I love how socialists bitch about housing but never just get together with their money, buy a building, and run it how they want.... Know why? They can't. Socialists inherently can't provide ANYTHING. They need to leech off everyone else like petulant children

FYI I'm not responding anymore as this isn't the sub for this discussion but if you wanna talk about this love anonymously on a podcast feel free to let me know

I'm in 'socialist gaming'? I don't even know what that means.

Yeah never mind the entire amount of a life's work that goes into being one. I get calls all the time for menial things. If someone like that owned a home they would go broke in repairs and maintenance. Renters don't understand sometimes it's cheaper for them to rent. They SHOULDNT buy. I'm on call 24/7, would they do that? I get called when I'm away on vacation.

Also I think it's hysterical that most of the people complaining about housing costs have no problem dropping 500$ on a console and 80$ on a game. Priorities. Even tho this is a piracy sub

Maybe. And tbh that's not landlord's fault either in most cases. Real estate market too is shithole.

Yes even most of us agree on this. We need to get giant firms to unload their inventory. They shouldn't get to hold housing. Issue is it's been going on WAY to long. The largest holder of single family homes is black rock and if they just unloaded it all on to the market it would crash the entire economy. I believe thats the plan. This is one area where even I, as a free market person, know there needs to be gov intervention. There needs to be a rule in place on how much inventory they can release at a time but it must be released.

True. Absolute capitalism or absolute socialism ain't take society anywhere. Solution is somewhere in the middle.

Actually there should be limits on how much inventory these corporations can hold and time and manner of releasing it.

yup, and this is how sensible adults talk and compromise

  • Also, they can take away any digital stuff that you paid with real money from your account so what's the point of even paying anymore? They forced us to go the other better way.

No, they didn't. You still have the option to buy a physical copy, also on the used market, AND you have the possibility to record everything you stream.

The used market doesn't support creators, recording what you stream is just a waste of time, money and quality

It does, as the creator got paid for the original CD purchase

Yes but you aren't buying the original CD you are buying second hand

Yes, and that is perfectly legal and your good right! Even Sony had it as a selling argument for the PS4 when Microsoft wanted to introduce mandatory internet connection for the Xbox! So please stop trying to make yourself feel good about your piracy practices! There are legal ways to obtain your music without ruining yourself financially or falling for their DRM scam!

There is no second hand music market in my country, so that's invalid for me and many others

No problem. You can still record from the free tier of Spotify, which has advertisement, so you pay indirectly for the music. I recommend using the desktop app, as the browser version has a bad quality.

I don't think you understand that recording something is considered piracy

Man, are you crazy? So all DVD and BD recorders and cassette recorders out there are piracy devices, but the FBI is just letting Panasonic and TEAC and what not sell them just like that in your local electronic store? hhh
Actually, Panasonic BD recorders even allow you to make 1:1 copies of the broadcast and then burn it to a DVD-R or BD-R! It's called DR mode!
Man, wake up, and know your rights!

If the creator sells a cd, and then someone buys that 2nd hand, how is the creator making money a 2nd time? This is what I don't understand

The only difference between a recording of a stream and downloading a webrip is quality.

Nope, recording a stream means you paid for the service, be it through membership or through ads.

Doing it that way is usually not an option because it's against TOS on most platforms.

ILLEGAL TOS you mean!! Agreeing to some TOS does not mean that all terms of that TOS are legal! Else you wouldn't be able to buy standalone recorders! For example, the Teac AD-850: it allows you to record from analog input to cassette or MP3 on a USB flash drive! Perfectly legal. And no one can forbid it!

You're starting to learn the difference between legal and just.

It is legal AND just to record anything for home use! Thankfully, the supreme court confirmed this during the Betamax lawsuit against Sony!

  • I used to really want a Netflix subscription so I could watch movies and series, especially when it was popular among my friends. Now, I can easily pirate and watch almost any movie or show, but for some reason, I just don’t find it as enjoyable anymore. These days, I’m content just watching random videos on YouTube. I’ve also noticed that I’ve lost the patience to watch long-form content like movies, probably because of Instagram Reels and other short-form videos. Unless a movie or series is truly engaging and keeps me hooked, I struggle to sit through it.

Still, I’m grateful to all the people who make this content available for free to pirates. I’ve saved a lot of money by not paying for subscriptions. It’s impressive how some people go through the effort of cracking DRM on movies and games, uploading them to the cloud, or seeding torrents, often without getting much in return except for a few donations.

Hollywood and Western AAA games have banned attractive feminine female characters ("the male gaze") and other things that appeal to men ("toxic masculinity") as part of going woke, and that's not helping either.

Or they're just dog shit bruh, ever think of that? L bait, try harder.

Or they're slow boiling the frog and you're not noticing.

Watch a few movies from the 90's, and compare the female leads to modern ones.

YouTube algorithms promote viewer choices (attractive people), while Hollywood promotes anti-male-gaze ideology. Except nobody actually wants to watch unattractive people for their entertainment. Both men and women want to see cute things on screen.

What you’re saying doesn’t assert your point. In fact it does the opposite.

    Care to explain how?

Well you replied to a comment implying how they weren’t shit to a comment that says they were shit a long time ago. Your reasoning is that these older movies heavily relied on looks.

That doesn’t say quality to me. It says the opposite. This is supporting the idea that the recent climate of movies relies on substance more than it used to.

The aim of a movie is to entertain and make people watch, not some arbitrary measure of "substance".

Also, the differences between the sexes and their interplay were traditionally one of the ingredients of "substance", now replaced by interchangeable androgynous characters.

Previously, being descriptive of reality was an ingredient of having "substance", now the aim is to prescribe their ideal reality, such as populating period movies set in Mediaeval Europe with Africans and Asians, or petite girl bosses who can physically overpower any male fighter, while having no flaws and no character development.

Your first sentence is so broad it’s not even worth diving into. I’d even question if you watch movies with an opinion like that.

Your second sentence contradicts the first one. In that same sentence you acknowledge substance as arbitrary but not entertainment?

What I’m hearing here is someone that wants to remain static and doesn’t see the world as a constant. I’ve heard the same blabber from people against women’s right. Yet everything you mentioned seems to be you having a problem about with people that are different from you.

Any movie nerd could pick this apart. Fortunately for you I’m not one.

Tell yourself whatever you need to, to avoid responding to my points.

    1. Entertainment is not arbitrary, it is measured by revenue, by people actually watching the movie and being entertained. A fail for new movies, which is the starting point of this discussion.

    2. Nobody cares about a snob's definition of substance, but I pointed out a couple of ways in which modern movies limit themselves into narrow options because of rigid ideology. Becoming formulaic and self-censored can only detract from substance no matter what the definition is.

"Yet everything you mentioned seems to be you having a problem about with people that are different from you."////

You got me. My real problem is movies featuring anyone other than bald Indian men.

Except trying to silence criticism by using ad hominem isn't going to save the movie industry.

i agree with u. it's so clear they are pushing a narrative

People complain that Hollywood content is not good anymore, but what does that even mean? Why did it happen to an entire industry?

A large part of it is that anything that appeals to men is feeding the male gaze and therefore taboo. I imagine much of what is attractive to women in male behavior is also toxic masculinity now. Androgynous characters are now the norm.

I see the downvotes as mostly ideological and performative, they know deep down that I'm right if they have two brain cells to rub together.

  • I have been burning DVDs/Bluray from my public library because I’m too scared of downloading a virus 😭😂

Imagine burning virus as well lmao /s

Lord I rebuke this energy 😭😂

you could have a spare, cheap old pc with linux for that purpose.

Or just learn how to use the internet.

That's why you have an antivirus.

Sometimes, I’m more weary of those than the actual virus 🫩

OK, maybe you should learn some computer security.

That doesn't make any sense bro

Depending on which antivirus you got, they can see you're ilegally ripping from discs and automatically send the info to your ISP who is then obligated to report you to the police.

Depending on which antivirus you got, they can see you're ilegally ripping from discs

If your "antivirus" is doing this...it's not an antivirus. It's malware. In which case you should probably be a bit more concerned that someone's able to see your passwords, bank accounts, credit card numbers...need I go on?

I'm trusting my uncle here, he works in cyber security

It's not illegal to make digital backups of media you own, though. How is the antivirus going to know any different?

  • Sadly I still need to buy drugs food and stuff.

  • Fuckk streaming!!!

  • instead i pay for protonvpn and realdebrid

That and use onstream and redflix total kodi

  • Today I bought new pants, phone and good beer. Because I don't spend money to spotify and netflix.

    That's the stuff 😊

  • i love piracy

  • Recommend websites🫣

Why I am always getting error?

try another proxy (europe if you're on USA region or vice versa), or try uploading the files to a different file sharing site option (pixeldrain, litterbox.catbox, etc)

  • Just ripped ‘Veep’ the complete series on blu-ray and just started ’Dexter’ tonight.

  • I pirate most stuff but I seriously can't live without spotify

I just did the math (since their yearly wrap-up just came out) and it's costing me less than .11 cents an hour for our Spotify family plan.

I can afford .11 cents per an hour for as much entertainment as we get out of it.

I switched back to an MP3 player recently and it was a smoother transition than you'd think. I have lots of CDs, anything I wanted and don't have is available at the library, and if they don't have it, the internet definitely does. My player also keeps a cache so I can plug it into my computer and get LastFM to scrobble it through MusicBee, so I can get recommendations like I would with Spotify.

wihtout AI generated tunes, recomended by bots.

  • Dunno what are the argues against Spotify, at least for someone using it often

CDs are absolutely prohibitives, sure it's not a lot for creators, but at least give some visibility for some :/

Not dying on this hill, I just think it's better than nothing

  • Congrats on having money

  • I used to collect FLACs for years, until Spotify launched in Pakistan.

It's honestly way too convenient and cheap for me. The family plan costs 665 PKR (~2.35 USD), and me and five other people split the cost, making it about 0.4 USD per person.

    It's basically free for us.

I still pirate music that I can't find on Spotify (which is a bit rare). Time is honestly the biggest issue. I used to spend so much time trying to find the best possible release of an album, then figuring out the best possible way to setup automatic tagging, but those days are gone.

Now I spend some time pirating movies/tv shows for my Plex server, and let Spotify handle all of my music needs.

  • Wtf I'm still broke

  • excuse me pirate music

  • Hahahah... The thing is, I cannot do that even pirating! Money flies!

  • Doing all of this you find it's easier to find money for things that you really want. I don't get how people live with all of these random subscription services. Bad financial decisions drag down everything.

  • I pay for both, I mean apple music sub is good handy all songs on mu demand. Netflix on the other hand not so much. I have to download many movies that I want to see and are not in any of my sub library.

Music subs are well done as all you need is in one place, but movies need to fix this. As its way easier to pirate movie than find it on the right streaming platform

  • Youtube is free for music

  • Except that I'm still poor because my homelab wasn't free

  • VPNs are cheaper, not that I’d know about that.

  • People pirate music these days? At least on android, there are a number of unofficial Youtube music clients that you don't need an account for and don't get any kind of ads. It just seems counter-productive nowadays. I know that it is technically pirating but it just feels different than going to some site for downloads to keep on your server.

  • Pirating music feels like the stone age. I'm not paying Spotify for music. I'm paying for them to manage my library for me. I'm paying for the algorithm to sort through that massive library. The pirate music experience just doesn't compare to that.

I totally get the feeling around it these days and ngl it's cumbersome for many.

No need to ditch. Just make sure to backup whatever music you have added to your personal library perhaps quarterly or annually your choice.

It's just a little insurance before future corporate fuckup ruins your entire experience.

I'm not gonna lie, the convenience has reduced the value of music and TV for me significantly. I've already listened to and seen everything. I could go an entire year without listening or watching anything and be totally fine. I very rarely go back to old music or shows. My main digital entertainment is podcasts, YouTube, and videogames these days. So I don't really get the pirate's obsession with preserving media. I mean it's nice that someone cares because I sure don't 😂

That's why I do both. There are advantages to owning over streaming too. There's a lot of music Spotify doesn't even have (many songs don't clear samples). But I pay for a family Spotify plan because it's so convenient to check out newly released music I may not want to waste time pirating. But if there's something I love, I need to own the digital copy in lossless format.

  • ah the joys of not being driven into pseudo poverty because i want to watch a single movie

  • Finally i can souper befoore sleep

  • Same but i share with my mom so i dont pay😅 and have a Plex media server

Same but with Jellyfin + jellyseerr it sucked when my server was down for a month when I fixed some networking stuff but it’s been back up and it’s pretty reliable and since moving to a distributed storage I have unlimited capacity as you expand with servers so I can just keep adding more for more capacity.

I have heard of jellyfin but never used it and what is jellyseerr?

Requests system like overseer for plex

  • I pirate almost everything and I'm still poor. Maybe I'm doing it all wrong. Are you guys pirating banks or ATMs?

  • How do you even pirate music now a days? I would love to stop paying for Spotify.

  • What is the best site? I still use fmovies

  • I just canceled my Spotify subscription. It was the last one.

  • Whats the deal with Monkey TV app on Iphone.. is there any catch?

  • How I sleep knowing my ISP doesn't give a shit.

  • i slept that well buddy..

but bcs i never needed to spent money on streaming at the first place XDXD

  • Money after 9 month: 🫃

"This one's Interest, he's 5 months old, and she's Usury"

  • Oh i use a youtube to mp3 websitebfor all my music, then of course instead of netflix i use theflixer. Com, which is free amd has almkst everything, for anime i use anilab, its an app with every anime

  • Cries in not having any money

  • Surely, all of us feel the same

  • And my media is not going to suddenly delete itself because copyright owner wants to remove it from the internet

  • I'm not even doing it for the money anymore

  • I’m still skint, but at least i’m enjoying life a lot cheaper

  • Is it possible to download piracy Spotify on phone now? (Samsung) Cause I used it for a long time, but like 5 month ago it stopped working

  • Wasn't Spotify in-pirateable after an update they did?

  • Literally me, but the money is in my dreams because I'm utterly broke

  • Before I am willing to pay for movies and television, I expect a refund for all the movies and television that I paid for in the past that was terrible quality

  • Where do you guys recomend that i can rip my spotufy playlists, cause most of the iptions i tried dont work anymore or make me dowload 1 music at a time (its a bit boring since my playlist is more than 2k songs)

  • Netflix ?

    They got shit only

  • man I love this subreddit, just my kind of people

  • Just wait till they find out about null....or rooter

  • I dunno about other countries but here my fucking Amazon Prime Video account shows me ads. Its a service I paid for and it shows me ads while streaming its original content.

  • Yeah even though I pay $70 AUD per month for a seed box it’s still worth doing that’s mainly because of how bad our internet speeds are here.

I have about 120tb between 4 storage nodes . Moosefs is like a NAS but with multiple servers of redundancy allowing more capacity than a single server

  • Can we ban these slop memes?

  • Sorry, but there is a free tier of Spotify, which has a good quality on the desktop version (web is really bad), and you can record the music being streamed with Audacity if you want. You have no excuse for pirating music.

  • same way criminals that rob people sleep at night.
