Recently nagviral yung call for donors ni MMC, with that iconic photo nung red lights sa façade nila. Nag chat naman sa gc namin recently yung kaibigan kong taga-PRC na naghahanap sila ng blood donors and companies interested for blood drives.
No idea why PRC doesn't have a call for donors PR (heh) but after asking staff sa headquarters nila, normal daw na bagsak rin ang supply ng Nat'l Blood Service nila around the holiday season, partly dahil marami ang nadedefer but also dahil kumokonti ang nagdodonate.
If you're curious or interested, I'd highly recommend donating blood if you're able, between 18 and 65, and at least 50kg. Takes about an hour and a half, relatively painless (honestly ok pa yung karayom, yung lancet for blood typing yung mas masakit hahah) and your blood literally has no other substitute for saving lives. PRC NHQ sa Boni accepts walk-ins, sa individual chapters you'll have to ask first if they do individual blood donations. Most other hospitals that have blood banks also accept voluntary donors.
If you're curious about hosting a blood drive, you can also coordinate with PRC or your local red cross chapter. Usually niyan you provide the venue tapos sila na bahala with the rest. imo consider timing it rin and asking when they'll need blood the most.
Asked sa PRC rin and they accept donors with tattoos and piercings, so long as it's been at least a year since your last one. Same lang with recent surgeries.

What I learned from needing blood supply for family: Red Cross is highly responsive to requests for blood supply. Can’t thank them enough.
Pero sa kahit anong source, hospital man or PRC or whatever… if there’s low supply, mayaman or mahirap, may pambayad ka o wala, may connection ka o wala—wala. Wala kang makukuha. I know of an executive who recently needed blood—siya mismo may posisyon sa hospital—but they still needed to call for donors. I personally experienced calling private and public hospitals for blood products for my child. We spent so much money just for blood and were willing to spend more makakuha lang ng dugo, but it was a real struggle dahil walang donors.
So please donate blood if you’re able to. It’s truly life saving.
magandang advocacy talaga ang blood donation drives lalo we cant manufacture blood in a laboratory, needed talaga from live humans.
Yet.
A vampire's dream is so far off...
I really want to donate as well. Unfortunately, because I'm gay and have a partner (long term monogamous) hindi talaga nila inaaccept. I understand the reason though and understand na it's for safety pero it's really a shame kasi me and my partner really want to donate blood regularly.
Wait.
Edit. Oo nga! Meron palang ganyan thank you ngayon ko lang nalaman
Saan mo naconfirm? Di ko mahanap eh.
Parang I know this person, anyway.
Donate blood!
Just to correct this misconception. Hindi binebenta ang blood. What you actually pay for is a "processing fee" kasi kailangan pa mag-undergo ng further testing ang donor blood to determine if it is the correct match for the recipient. You can read RA 7719. It states that all blood banks are non-profit.
It is mandated by law that blood banks do not gain profit. But don't spread misinformation na "binebenta" yung blood anywhere.
daming mandated sa law. think how much of that is followed? i have respect sa volunteers ng red cross, pero sa pagka-pilipino wala ako masyadong tiwala. wala akong proof aside sa prejudice ko. donated a couple times, i make sure na red cross affiliated. i've done privat pero para na yun sa kakilala ko, pero even there, you need 2 donors to get 1 blood. like WTF. pero kailangan na so i let it be. same naman sa public pero dun matatanggap ko pa.
tingin mo bakit ganun ang proseso? saan mapupunta yung isang bag? we needed 2 bags so 4 persons ang dapat magdonate. san mapupunta yung 2 extra bags? and yung processing at typing babayaran pa rin naman yun for the 4 people.
That's all we need to know. You're just spreading misinformation.
mas sure ako wala kang alam sa actual reality. naghanap ka lang ng phrase na convenient to call me out, without considering the full context. sana one day di mo kailanganin pagdaanan yung sistema. kung nasa pinas ka, at di ka din naman above median, good luck. may patunguhan sana yang kamangmangan mo.
Ang context ay yung blood na donated ay not for profit.
that's none of our business honestly. hindi na natin saklaw pa yung i audit kung ano ano yung costs ng bawat hospital at bakit mas mahal sa ganito ganyan. we donate blood, at mapupunta sa nangangailangan. as simple as that.
besides, private and public hospitals both deserve blood donations. i think what you are saying kasi is u want to avoid donating sa private since sabi mo nga "binebenta ng napakamahal" e parehas lang naman merong mga pasyente na nangangailangan. donate where you can. let the hospitals do the rest.
hindi fair na sabihin na "it's none of our business". Yung tax mo, pinaghirapan mo kitain, pero ninanakaw, dapat none of our business din?
Eto dugo ko. Voluntarily at charitable ang pagbibigay. None of our business saan mapupunta?
Might as well na lang na magkaroon initiative yung private hospital to "pay for blood" then tsaka nila ibenta sa patients nila.
i don't get the analogy. tax is MANDATORY so i would NEVER say na that's none of our business kung saan mapupunta. blood is like what u have said, VOLUNTARY. you are encouraged pero hindi ka pinipilit.
i think common sense naman na private hospitals are expensive talaga, and maraming factors to consider kasi aminin na natin iba talaga ang quality of healthcare dito. kkwentahin pa ba natin yung margin between private and public hospitals kung ang goal naman ng pareho is to save lives?
donate where u can, pero wag nyo na i audit hahaha
hindi ka pa cguro deep into this system kaya ang dali sabihin na none of our business. been to both situations, donating and needing. kaya nga nag-encourage ako na magdonate ng dugo, just make sure sa red cross, yun yung point dun. gets mo na po?
I think dapat common sense na po ito pero still, let me make this clear. MMC is a private institution, not a government facility. Ang government facilities like Jose Reyes po ay funded by the government.
hindi nyo nagets yung point ko. blood donated is given free. you do expect parity kung saan to mapupunta.
think about this. bagyo, nagdonate ka ng delata, ineexpect mo makakarating sa nangangailangan ng libre, pero ang nangyari yung nagdistribute, tamang nagbigay sa mahihirap na nasalanta, pero dun sa may kaya-kaya pero nangangailangan din, ibinenta nila yung goods na galing sayo.
anong mararamdaman mo? hindi ba yun pareho sa pagbibigay ng dugo, pero hindi mo alam kung sa less fortunate mapupunta or sa may kayang magbayad sa mamahaling ospital pero ibebenta sa kanila on the guise of "mas mahal na processing fee".
In fact, payag ako kung ilelevel ng private ang presyo nila sa public, kahit na si villar or sy pa mangailangan ng dugo ko.
gets mo na po yung point ko?
Maam, yung binabayaran nyo po is testing. Screening for HIV, Hepatitis B & C, Malaria and Syphilis. If ipapatest nyo po yan as regular patient sobrang mahal babayaran mo.
I can show you my license and 7 years experience in blood bank but that still won't change your opinion. Your ego is too big to see facts.
Here are the facts I know:
- 2 donor is to 1 bag. You claim to work in the blood bank so you should know this.
The aircon I mentioned is yung during extraction.
- "Donate blood! Pero make sure na hihingi kayo nung coupon na proof na nagdonate ka. make it a regular thing. mostly positives ang effect ng blood letting aside sa sakit ng karayom at konting pagkahilo." I ENCOURAGED PEOPLE TO DONATE.
Then sue us. Sue all blood banks you claim to sell blood. Kasi RA 7719 clearly states that blood is not for sale. But you are too stupid to even look for it kahit may iba nang nagsasabi dito.
Paulit ulit? Kahit grade 1 kayang ma pick up to.
You haven't done your part fact checking at walang point yung point mo. Sa tingin mo your opinion will matter? You can't even support it with law. Shame on you.
HINDI BINEBENTA ANG DUGO. Yung dugo libre, yung processing/testing of the blood ang may bayad. Non-profit and blood banks.
I would gladly donate blood, but I don't think papasa ako sa requirements.
I work sa hospital, totoo na konti lang supplies ng blood during this season.
If you have any questions. Just comment away. I will be glad to answer queries. Need na need ng dugo ngayong month. Maybe I can encourage some of you and clear some misconceptions.
Thank you.
Hi po, questions po since I can't donate bec I'm under 50kg so I'll encourage friends na lang:
Can they donate if: a) he is taking maintenance meds for cholesterol/uric acid? b) he has a tattoo that was from years ago pa?
Last question: What if the person doesn't know that they have blood infections, HIV or whatever, does the blood bank still test the donated blood?
Thank you!
Hi, thank you for taking time to ask questions and advocating your friends to donate.
Here are my answer to your questions.
A. Yes pwede as long as controlled ang blood pressure (related sa cholesterol bakit tumataas minsan) but sometimes may mga doctor na hindi nagaallow. Usually naman may mga kasamang doctor sa mobile blood donations or sa chapters or hospitals.
B. If the tattoo was done years ago, pwede na magdonate. Hindi ka lang papayagan magdonate if less than a year siyang nagawa.
And for your last question, lahat ng kinukuhang dugo for blood donation ay required itest for blood transfusion transmissible disease kasama na diyan ang HIV. So kahit hindi sila aware, madedetect at madedect yun.
I hope nakahelp ako to answer your questions. 😊
Wow. Thank you!!!
This wasn't even taught in our school.... o.o
Yes pwede, as long as pasok iba mong requirements for blood donation. 😊
Hello, question, if the donor is not aware they have blood infection like Hepa B, do you notify them once you’re done with the blood tests?
Ideally, yes. however, minsan may cases kasi masyado pang mababa ang detectable na hep b sa katawan mo kaya need pa siya ipaconfirm sa RITM so natatagalan magsend ng results sa donor. And ang way kasi to notify the donor is snail mail, kaya minsan naliligaw.
Hello! Ilang days nga po ulit before/after menstruation pwede mag donate ng blood?
Contrary to popular belief, pwede ka magdonate kahit may menstruation ka as long as okay ang assessment sayo before donation. 😊
Question po🖐 Kapag nagpa tooth wisdom extraction last Aug.2025, need ba talaga maka 1 year before maging eligible sa blood donation?
Hello! Afaik, yes, bawal, kasi nung sinubukan kong magdonate noong 2022 hindi ako pinayagan after 1 yr pa raw since hiniwa yung gums ko para matanggal wisdom tooth ko. Then nagtry ulit ako after a year pero since nagpabunot ulit ako (ito bunot lang talaga), hindi ulit ako pinayagan.
Yes po. Since wisdom tooth removal is considered as major operation, deferred po kayo for 1 year.
Hi OP! Sorry ikaw na tatanungin ko pero would you know if there are other requirements in donating blood? I would love to donate pero mataas ang cholesterol ko. Not sure if I am qualified.
Hi, medtech here. Maraming bawal before magdonate, di ka pwedeng puyat, dapat 2 weeks nang tapos mens before you can donate (for girls ofc), bawal kape/alcohol within 24 hrs before donation, there are also some meds that can defer you, also tattoos (at least a year after), and vaccines (dipende if what vaccine ang tinurok sa’yo), also bawal din pag mataas blood pressure, tinatanong din if nakipagtalik ka (lalo pag male to male) kasi nagiging careful lang kasi dahil sa HIV cases.
Hello there.
Hydrate well.
^ can vouch for both. Weight training (specifically hammer curls) and working on the car made my veins pop a little hehe. I keep hydrated the day before, then I try to stay a little bit more hydrated than normal right up to donation. Napupuno ko yung blood bag in 5-7 mins lol
Do you have to pay the tests to donate? For example, I want to donate but don’t remember my blood type
Before donation, chinecheck yung hemoglobin if eligible to donate, also blood type. However if tinutukoy mo yung other tests like HIV, Hepa B, dipende sa protocol ng hospi kung tinetest nila agad ‘yun.
There will be a doctor on site that will conduct assessment bago ka I-go.
Not OP pero wala masyadong other requiremenrs other than doon sa initially pointed out at iscreen interview ka pa rin nila before blood donation. AFAIK you can even donate even if you're hypertensive pero naka-inom ka na ng gamot mo for that day at normal ang BP upon donation. I'm a long time blood apheresis donor at kailangang kami every i-CBC before every donation kaya alam agad kung fatty ang dugo mo pero sa regular blood donation nde na nila tinetest yun.
The usual. Wag mag kape, wag puyat at walang sakit.
Though nasa rule pero ndi naman strictly enforced, bawal gays or people engaging in same-sex sex.
If available kayo, pwede kayo pumunta sa hospital and mag tanong if may blood center sila na pwede mag donate ng dugo.
Katakot talaga ang kelangan ng transfusion, may fam member ako na naaksidente at kelangan ng several liters including donors para ma replenish yung nagamit namin, kahit after ng operation kelangan pa ng transfusion at in turn more donations. Ang masaklap is sa lahi namin di pwede mag donate dahil may comorbidity so pa reach out kami, thankfully keri naman
Planning to donate every month para manlang may magawa akong kabutihan🤣
Went there both sa Makati Med and PRC Boni, and I gotta say na mas mahigpit ng onti si MMC kasi according to them, ang priority patients na need ng blood transfusions ay yung mga nasa ICU, NICU, among others.
But don't feel discouraged everyone!
Nagkakaubusan po tuwing January to early February kasi wala po gaanong nagdo donate during holiday seasons kasi unhealthy yung pagkain at halos puyat lahat.
I regularly donate blood, 3 t0 4 months interval. Usually pag may blood donation drive sa work ko or sa nearest public hospital. Naging panata ko na lang din. Good for your healfh also.
sa qc din yung red cross sa likod ng city hall tabi gn kuhaan ng nbi and pnp clearance, open for walk in din kahit anong oras.
Donated sa QC Chapter ng PRC, not sure sa time, but they only accept walk-ins during M-W-F. Maybe they changed it due to the urgency recently, so better contact them ahead before going.
E.g., during operation, kapag nag bleed si patient, salin agad ng dugo. May mga instances kasi na puwede naman other alternatives such as protamine muna sana.
Significant blood loss is best treated by replacement of blood with blood products. Protamine is a reversal agent of heparin, otherwise walang use sa bleeding na patient na hindi naman heparinated. Other IV fluids do not have the same qualities of blood and may actually worsen the condition of a patient.
As i’ve said, may mga instances.
Meron ka naman point na kulang tayo sa advancement because dito sa US pwede magtransfuse kahit hindi same bloodtype as long as compatible ang testing BUT they also have extensive antibody testing that not all bloodbanks in the Philippines perform dahil the kits are expensive. Pero to say na lax lang dahil salin lang ng salin is a big No. Hindi nga minsan makabigay agad ang lab kasi may prioritization sa pagbigay ng dugo due to shortage.
I don't think it's your call to criticize the course of treatment sa mga pasyente. You don't know any better kasi hindi mo naman nakikita kung anong nasa charts nila at kung bakit hindi binigay yung gusto mong approach.
I work in a blood bank for years now and you can't be giving misleading insights like that. Sinong nagde decide ng treatment plan ng pasyente? Diba doctor? Idk what other advancements you want pero mas well trained naman ang mga doctors compared sayo.
Something like that.
You'll have to negotiate first and clearly you lack experience on that kasi hindi mo nakikita ito sa setting.
