Napoleon had made a beeline towards Moscow, whereas the Moustache Man had created a frontier in the Soviet Union while being able to reach the border of Moscow.
So far in history not a single country has successfully invaded Russia because they were unprepared for the devastating Russian winters. Napoleon, hitler, etc all had to retreat after suffering massive losses from the <-25 temperatures. However, if the Russian winters get better, countries (such as Germany) would have a lot easier job of invading.
That’s actually a forgotten sign of the apocalypse. It was when “cats and dogs lie together” and the transcriptor decided “no, I can’t do it, ‘and when penguins ride polar bears into the battle of Armageddon’ is just too much, that’s where we lose EVERYONE! I’m dropping it.”
The last time somebody brought out the Canadians we got the Geneva Convention as a result. Tbh as a German I'm glad this time they will be in our side.
Fun not fact! In the war the Americans designed their grenades so they could be thrown like baseballs, something they would already be familiar with and good at.
This is why the Germans made theirs shaped like a beer bottle.
Jan Mayen is part of Norway in the real world though. We're surely used to the cold, but not particularly interested in Russia except keeping their groping hands away from us
And have a strong logistics. It was also the destruction of foodstock and facilities when the Russian withdraw that put the invading armies in difficulty, especially Napoléon one.
But they came to power precisely because Russia was losing the war,the germans literally sent Lenin to Moscow in an armored train after his first attempt for revolution failed.
Still, it is not correct that the germans "forced" the Russians to surrender. That was simply soviet policy.
Further, the Russians had allies - who ultimately won the war without them anyway. So if we're playing the counterfactual where the Kerensky government isnt overthrown by the pro-peace faction - the Russians would have won simply by staying in the war.
And again, the germans hardly had any Russian territory at the point Russians surrendered. So even if we ignore that the Russians most likely would have won the war had they stayed in it, and were the ones who chose to surrender (rather than being forced) we can't attribute the hypothetical german victory to a successful invasion of Russia- because the surrender happened without meaningful victories on russian soil anyway.
Lately, I've been trying to manage processes structure for a company. Whenever there are discrepancies or lack of logic, I keep hearing what you've commented, almost to the dot. They have more exceptions than anything static. Which makes it nearly impossible to organise, and I am starting to rethink whether it was a good idea to give it a try
I'm not sure if you are aware, but just for that, I am plotting and planning your downfall :)
The funniest thing is that those cities are pretty Western. Once upon unstable time in a country foreigners got Moscow but then Rohan came with the first light (aka militia from the East).
Napoleon, hitler, etc all had to retreat after suffering massive losses from the <-25 temperatures.
Napoleon lost three quarters of his army and all but one elite guard's corps and was forced to leave Moscow and suffered his first major defeat in the campaign under Maloyaroslavets BEFORE winter and when first snow fell.
Extremely low temperatures and lack of winter quarters and uniform severely crippled Napoleon's army, but they weren't the cause of his defeat. I have no idea where that idiotic myth, repeated everywhere ad nauseum, comes from. It could be debated that harsh conditions actually assisted Napoleon's retreat because Russian High Command even entertained an idea of leaving the French alone since chasing them through the snow blocked highways was a dangerous gamble. That pursuit would demand a lot of material, but couldn't bring any major gain except for taking Napoleon himself as a POW.
Napoléon got to retreat because Russian commandement burn Moscow before french armi take it that let french soldiers starve . Russian attack multiples time the french on the retreat they where not prepared for that, french deffenetly lost at the bérézina a coordinated attack at a stratégique point . Its a real military defeat not just " winter in Russia is cold, we couldn't do anything to fight it"
No, you need to learn your freakin' history is what you need. I'm not even kidding. You can find a lot of parallels to what's going on in the world today to what happened in the past.
It’s more difficult to invade countries like Ukraine and Russia during rainy seasons. The soil gets extremely dirty and tanks just dig in it and you will have a hard time to move it even for a few meters.
Cold winters are the best for a heavy vehicle offense. The soil is hard af and your vehicles never overheat.
The soil gets extremely dirty and tanks just dig in it and you will have a hard time to move it even for a few meters.
The exact reason why Russia didn't capture Kyiv in the days after the invasion. Their big ass convoy got stuck in the mud. Things could've gone a lot worse if it were a bit drier that day.
Russia the word comes from the rus who were vikings. That's where the rus in belarus comes from as well.
The problem for napoleon and hitler was similar in that is it so vast a country with shitty road networks that logistically it was hard to consolidate territory. In Russia you could win 20
battles but not win the war before you get too deep into the country and run into the winter. They also had crazy mud in the thaw as well.
The original vikings weren't trying to go that far and in a pre nationalist era.
Hitler could have genuinely had very good chance of getting to and likely even capturing Moscow on top of all the huge damage in doing it, if he didn't do a series of blunders and troop mismanagement, biggest of which was splitting part of the army that was going on Moscow to instead go and assault already encircled Kyiv. This gave USSR crucial time to pull up defences, restore productive after it was moved and get Lend-lease from USA
Moscow genuinely would not have been that big of a strategic deal anyway. The USSR had already consolidated most of the important shit away from the capital, including all of the bigwigs. The biggest thing is that it would have been the Battle of Stalingrad except a bit earlier, and would have likely killed the advance anyway by being the same kind of mutual meatgrinder that happened there.
That was probably before Russia was a unified country. When Hitler invaded in WW2, the soviets burned all the cities/farms as they retreated, leaving the German forces without shelter or supplies. The soviets then brought in soldiers from Siberia who had trained in those harsh conditions, causing devastating German losses.
Nonsense. Napoléon invaded in the summer and if anything he was unprepared for the devastating heat. His soldiers were dying from heatstroke. He had to retreat not because of the cold itself, but because the Russian winter meant his logistics were dead, which he knew would happen if course but was expecting to finish with the Russians before it became a problem. While we're at it, while the Russians did set site to part of Moscow, there was still plenty of housing left and the fire didn't affect the troops being able to sleep warmly, also Napoléon was of average height for the time.
I cannot believe there are people alive who do not know their history. I mean, this is shit I learned in high school. It's rudimentary. What the hell is going on with our education system, ffs.
Yes, the cold weather played a part in the campaign failure, as winter has done thousands of time before that. But sheer distance, scorched earth, logistical failures, and even mud all played a bigger role. So I wouldn't blame the education system for not repeating the same 'condensed to the point of irrelevance' version you were taught.
Pretending 'the russian winter' is the reason three seperate campaigns failed is misguided at best.
Not downplaying the winters but their scorched earth tactics did most of the work. Napoleon reached Moscow before snowfall. For the Germans the first bit of winter helped them a bit. Since a lot of vehicles got stuck in the mud because of the rainy autumn, and the hard winter ground helped them gey moving again. But in the end, both where unprepared for the cold winter that eventually came.
Not just rUsSiAn winter: any country invaded with extreme winters or just an unprepared army caught out. See also russian invasion of Finland, Swedish army freezing in the Norwegian mointains, Chosin in Korea, etc
Germany was comical because they thought it was going to be super quick and ez. So they took them by surprise, but then once they got slowed they didn’t have any winter supplies at all, uniforms, cold weather oil. 😅
I highly doubt that. The Soviets ethnically cleansed Karelia after WWII (just as they did with East Prussia), so there are almost no Finns left. I don't think Finland as a whole is eager to throw a shitton of money down the drain to bring a region full of Russians, and run down by Russia up to finnish standards.
"You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous of which is, 'never get involved in a land war in Asia,' but only slightly less well-known is this: 'Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!'"
That's good Conspiracy theory. Germany is responsible for climate change. They realized they couldn't invade Russia like it was until now. Now they are waiting, preparing the new invasion at their Antarctic and moon bases to finally finish the job.
The classic blunders! The most well known of which is "never fight a land war in Russia during the winter." Only slightly less well known is "Never bet against a Sicilian WHEN DEATH IS ON THE LINE!"
Now introducing – cold rains! Would you like to get soaked wet at -15 C° with a moderate wind? You sure can, unless you wear the hydrophobic clothes that will make you sweat...so that when you take them off, you're still be wet!
This would benefit Russia way more than Germany since a lot of their ports would no longer freeze during the winter. Also it was the spring and autumn rain that hurt Germany more than anything since muddy roads make it really hard for them to be mobile.
Yeah, a major reason why Germany lost WWII is because Russia was exceptionally cold that winter, which must have been brutal because non-exceptional winters are also very cold in Russia.
He actually was very bad at most tactics, but was sometimes good at others. His generals were really really top notch. Manstein was a really clever guy and brilliant tactician but hitler would throw wrenches into their plans constantly. Dunkirk is the best example imo.
Despite the popular belief that russian winter defeated the french, napoleon lost most of his army before winter.
Dysentery, lack of supplies, typhus and the russians fabian strategy meant that they lost soldiers every day in mass even without battles.
By the time he took moscow he had around 100-105 k soldiers, with several tens of thousands protecting supply depos and the flanks. Out of an army of 600 000 at the start.
By the time the winter arrived the grand armee was already retreating from moscow, the immense cold just added to their misery.
It's rather crude, really, to reduce everything just to the cold winter, ignoring the talents of the commanders and how strongly the population was mobilized for the war industry.
The cold winter was only one factor.
But yes, in the last two years, snow has fallen noticeably later than usual, almost in the second half of December.
But on the other hand, the summer has become incredibly hot, even +30°C has become a common temperature, and it's considered a heatwave when it's +40°C.
Germany may reconsider invading Russia again ( but you know Germany now is in tull support to Israel and all its wepons are meant to kill babies in Gaza , this is the priority of Germany right now).
Tbh irrelevant meme, we are not in the 1st half of XX century anymore when central and eastern Europe had plenty of youngsters to fight wars and revolutions. The continent would turn into a radioactive dump long before any troops reach the frontlines.
Yet here we are, in the first half of the 21st century, with Central and Eastern Europe witnessing war between Ukraine and Russia, involving armies of millions and resulting in millions of casualties. Even a shortage of young people does not stop this.

Napoleon actually made it Moscow
And lost terribly. Like Mustache man.
Napoleon had made a beeline towards Moscow, whereas the Moustache Man had created a frontier in the Soviet Union while being able to reach the border of Moscow.
The treacherous russians deceived him by establishing the capital in St. Petersburg during that period.
EDIT: Modernish history
The Mongols pulled it off in 1240. Poland-Lithuania did it in 1610, they captured Moscow and occupied it for two years.
Have you seen Mongolia? Western Russia is like the Bahamas compared to the northeastern step.
To successfully invade Russia, you simply have to come from somewhere colder.

No wonder why Trump put tariffs on the Penguin island
All the men in my ex wife’s heart must be rubbing their hands at the prospect of conquering Russia
And have a strong logistics. It was also the destruction of foodstock and facilities when the Russian withdraw that put the invading armies in difficulty, especially Napoléon one.
And they had to sign the treaty of Brest-Litowks in 1918. Only the intervention of the USA changed that later on.
Germany ACTUALLY forced Russia to surrender in WW1,not sure if it was winter.
Russia's surrender was the result of the anti-war bolsheviks coming to power. At that point the Germans held barely any land in Russia proper.
But they came to power precisely because Russia was losing the war,the germans literally sent Lenin to Moscow in an armored train after his first attempt for revolution failed.

Year 1240 was in the middle of climate anomaly that caused unusually warm weather, 1610 was during little ice age. FYI.
You forget about one crucial detail - WW1. Besides, as we all know, the winter wadn't the only factor.
Well, the Germans didn’t actually reach Petrograd or Moscow
Eh, I would say that they managed to defeat Russia without having to take those cities. I think that counts.
More a case of Russia defeating itself
The Germans brought Lenin to Russia.
They defeated them.
The Russian Army had already started to give up by that point. Lenin was just the final nail in the coffin
The funniest thing is that those cities are pretty Western. Once upon unstable time in a country foreigners got Moscow but then Rohan came with the first light (aka militia from the East).

Germany won against russia in ww1
Yes, but that was a large cases of Russia disintegrating internally. It's quite possible that they would have defeated them regardless though.
Caused by Germany.
That's a gross simplification to say the least and still doesn't constitute Germany properly invading them.
Didn’t people from Ukraine invade and settle it along with the Vikings
Russia the word comes from the rus who were vikings. That's where the rus in belarus comes from as well.
The problem for napoleon and hitler was similar in that is it so vast a country with shitty road networks that logistically it was hard to consolidate territory. The original vikings weren't trying to go that far and in a pre nationalist era.
Vikings also utilized navigable river systems and thus had a more consistent time handling logistics in the areas they expanded into.
Its all just logistics, both napoleon and hitler did not have good logistics.
Easy to say that now that you know the outcome of history.
Try doing decisions with fog of war.
I mean mustacheman was very good at speaking and politics, not necessarily great when forcing through his misguided military strategies
They did, so did the Mongols. But there wasn't a "Russia" yet, there were multiple states who were warring with each other a lot.
And the Huns
Good old the hun
That was probably before Russia was a unified country. When Hitler invaded in WW2, the soviets burned all the cities/farms as they retreated, leaving the German forces without shelter or supplies. The soviets then brought in soldiers from Siberia who had trained in those harsh conditions, causing devastating German losses.
Say that to the mongols.
Mongolia is even more harsh than Russia in many ways. That's comparing apples and oranges.
Imagine this, this, and this in the dead of winter 800 years ago.
IIRC Hitler's team blundered their logistics and didn't get the cold weather gear to the front on schedule.
The invasion force at the beginning of operation Barbarossa was already far too small. Which is also the reason why they had to Siege Leningrad.
When the Heeresgruppe B reached Stalingrad they were already outnumbered in terms of tanks and artillery.
In the second World War, Germany attempted invading Russia. Let's just say that they had to resort to eating the fallen.
Wrong use of meme
Despite the popular belief that russian winter defeated the french, napoleon lost most of his army before winter.
Dysentery, lack of supplies, typhus and the russians fabian strategy meant that they lost soldiers every day in mass even without battles.

Means that Russia was saved by weather conditions back in ww2 otherwise they would have lost big time
"Hans, mach die Tigerpanzer bereit !"
"Jawohl herr Oberfeldwebel !"
Ahh, ye ole myth that winter defeated the invaders of Russia
That's the plan
It's rather crude, really, to reduce everything just to the cold winter, ignoring the talents of the commanders and how strongly the population was mobilized for the war industry. The cold winter was only one factor.

Germany may reconsider invading Russia again ( but you know Germany now is in tull support to Israel and all its wepons are meant to kill babies in Gaza , this is the priority of Germany right now).
The problem is the mud, not the frost, as frost makes the soil solid and you move easier on frozen ground then on mud.
Revive Napoleon right now
Well, modern Germany can’t even protect its own women from migrants! How are they going to invade anyone!?!
That’s what stopped them last time, no?
The presidential cabinet said global warming is a hoax, they would not lie to me, not this honest and transparent cabinet.
Now I get why Germany is so staunchly set of using coal and gas instead of renewable energies

Honestly at this point in history if Germany took another run at Russia I wouldn't be nearly as bothered as last time.
I‘ll be old and gray before that happens. Students in Germany are on strike now because of reintroduction of mandatory conscription surveys.

Yet here we are, in the first half of the 21st century, with Central and Eastern Europe witnessing war between Ukraine and Russia, involving armies of millions and resulting in millions of casualties. Even a shortage of young people does not stop this.
