But it’s been clear that her priority is me and my comfort and making sure that I feel loved. That’s what being a parent looks like. She set aside her ego and learned to accept me as I am. Could it have been better/easier? For sure. But she has always done her best. I love my mom she’s the goddamn goat (she would hate that I said goddamn though).
Not a trans example, but when I was deep in the throes of my alcoholism my parents talked about cutting me out of the will. In the words of my Stepdad they had, "Worked too hard to let me piss away all their money on alcohol." Which, fair enough. Once I got healthy again I learned that even when I was at my worst, their idea of "cutting me out" still involved leaving me enough so that I'd never have to end up on the street. I'm married, healthy, and have a decent career now so it's not a huge deal either way - but it gives me warm fuzzies to know that at the end of the day they weren't giving up on me.
