Just because no one else has said it yet. Don't give people pets as presents. So many pets end up abandoned or surrendered to shelters after the holidays because someone got gifted a living creature and couldn't or wouldn't deal with the responsibility that entails.
I think the one and only circumstance where it's acceptable is if you live with the giftee (and are therefore willing & able to take over the animal care) and the pair of you have been discussing adopting that particular kind of cat anyway. Imo it's still better to give a piece of paper that says, "Let's go to the shelter and adopt a pet!" but I think it's fine, ultimately.
If you and your wife have been discussing adopting a kitten for awhile, you're both on board, but just have been waiting for the right time, surprising them with the kitten tends to work out fine. If your girlfriend who you don't live with hasn't mentioned any interest in a kitten, and you surprise her with one... that has a high chance of leading to a problem.
Also, don't surprise your 17 year old with a dog. I'm speaking as someone who was once a 17 year old surprised with a dog. He's my best friend and I love him with my whole heart, but I was unprepared at 17 to consider the next 13 years of my life and how difficult finding dog-friendly apartments are. But in my parents' defense... It was a free, abandoned puppy of a breed I had been dreaming of since I was a child who would've been euthanized had we not adopted him. And my parents willingly kept him when I moved into a place I couldn't bring him during the year I got my master's.
Honestly, I feel like anyone who will be an owner of said pet should be involved in getting it in the first place. Animals have personalities too, and just because they gel with one person doesn't mean they'll gel with others, and it's better to find that out BEFORE bringing them home, if at all possible.
I think that's a good point, but I also know a good few people who adopt animals based solely on their pictures online, and sometimes their behaviors in the shelter (a stressed environment) don't equate to their behaviors at home once they're settled. My whole family went to adopt a kitten from a stray cat's litter, it was going to be my sister's (not a gift/surprise), and she chose the shyest one who never came by us at all. That cat grew up to be one of the most friendly, outgoing cats I've ever owned. He's also one of the most mischievous cats I've ever had, we had to put his cat treats into a container with a lock because he would manage to jump atop the refrigerator, open the cabinet, and then open the cat treats. He's not the least bit how he behaved as a kitten.
i know it's suppose to be cute. but the idea that you have an unsecured kitten in a bag, just outside freaks me out.
at any point from when he put it there before getting his wife, and when he was just sitting there, or when she picked it up. the kitten could have freaked out or decided it didn't wanna be there. and just jump out and run away.
The first time I bought a cat I foolishly thought I was all good walking out of petsmart with her just sitting chill in the shopping cart with my gentle hand on her back.
As soon as the sun hit her face she bolted down the parking lot. Luckily I was able to corner her under a car and get her into my car, but that very well might not have been the case.
Guys, if you are getting a new pet, everything is new and potentially scary to them! They don't automatically understand that hanging out around you is better than running in a random direction as fast as they can!
My first cat was from a shelter. They put her in this carboard box with holes that was folded up and closed pretty securely and she still almost got out and got away lmao.
Please don't, squished-faced aka brachycephalic animals like this cat (and as a more well known example pugs) are a result from intensive inbreeding, have a ton of health issues, and can barely breathe. It's animal cruelty for aesthetics.

The rules around giving pets as gifts are the same as the rules around asking someone to marry you, or asking a question of a witness in court.
You don't do it unless you already know what the answer is.

I was like WTF along with ya.
Probably, just hopefully, he put baby back there after a safe ride home.

That kitten's going to be the grumpiest looking cat ever.

Mongo and Kiwi are appalled.
If I had to live with this flat faced monstrocity for the next 10-20 years, I'd be crying too.
All the while knowing he has only one brain cell that he shares. It’s disgusting.

“Doll face” Persians are far healthier and cuter too. The snoot must be boopable.
Just looked up doll face Persians and oh my god, my screen is full of all the adorable fluff and none of the breathing issues! Give me all of them.
Aren’t they just too cute?!
Getting someone a pet they didnt ask for... and it comes with life long health issues.
The little derpy look upwards out of the bag was killing me. Not a thought going through that head.
