T500 is iconic. Its been a staple of the game since the beginning, and it's descriptive. I could tell someone whose never heard of overwatch that I'm a top 500 player and they would instantly understand what I am saying.
"Challenger" means nothing. They could have made a new rank below bronze called "challenger" and I wouldn't have blinked an eye.
I am not exaggerating when I say that I think this is the dumbest thing they have ever done. Game balancing is hard. This is like marketing 101. You have an iconic part of your brand, you dont just swap it to some generic nonsense name for no reason.
Obviously it doesn't matter to 99% of the player base, but I just dont understand it.
Top500 more like top 100 +400 alt accounts
Also true but how does changing its name fix that?
It doesnt
Okay sure but how dose that make my hair more luxurious and full?
It doesnt
Okay sure but how does that make me 2 inches taller and more muscular?
It doesnt
Trying to solve problems with the system makes sense. Changing the name is baffling.
pretty sure the leaderboard isnt limited to the top 500 anymore
Any proof that the problem was even a quarter as much as you’re claiming?
Hyperbole, obviously im exagearting
they're literally changing the entire system to prevent t500 from being t100 +400 alts
Ok and do you have even a shred of evidence that the problem you claim is an actual thing. I’ve been t500 the past 4 seasons and I haven’t felt like it was that way at all.
It’s not. They made t500 require over 750 lifetime comp wins.
You literally can’t be an alt account with that many games won.
Technically this prevents *new* alt accounts from entering t500
But if its lifetime, then a player who already had mutliple alts on top500 could still do that
How much would someone have to play the game to have over 750 competitive wins on multiple accounts
Ask that question to your local streamer
Yep my bad 400 of the top 500 accounts are all 1 persons alt account. You are correct cause you watch jay3 and flats and whoever streams this game
I am always correct, the orange arrows told me so!
Ironically makes it cooler to be in the top 500 as you know you are actually in the top100 lol
Why homgenize everything? 'Top 500' was iconic to Overwatch. 'Challenger' is just copying every other competitive game out there
And it sounds like the old role titles, back when they had "Platinum Role Challeger" and such. Because of that association it doesn't sound elite to me lol.
its just copying league
Something something it prevents toxicity
Because every facet of gaming needs to be cleansed of any possible avenue for someone to be mean
blizzard should hire me i would fix that
So many unemployed English majors coulda saved this one
Sorry, can only do what our ai overlords tell us to do now.
I was shocked when I found out that challenger ranks are just based on how many games you played...like what
They don't even rank you according to your actual comp ranking on the leaderboards. What's the point of it then?
Just restore top 500 and make it so that you have to play X games a week to be in it, maybe 10-15 games like WOW arena.
that was already the case i’m pretty sure
It was 15 wins total for the season, reduced from the 25 wins that it was earlier (I think it was 25, it was several seasons ago).
Yeah just make it a weekly thing which should remove most alts
Also the new top500 system is soo weird. LHcloudy hit top1 while being gm3 lol
Worst thing is that it doesnt mean anything anymore. Sure before you were combating with people with 10 alts. But it still meant that you're amongst actual top 500.
Now its just a contest of whos more unemployed. It is indeed ridiculous. It has no meaning. It is really the most useless change ever. Probably serving some people at blizzard to justify their salary.
Yeah I'm not exactly a fan
I feel like just raising the required number of games would have addressed the issue lol
But I can at least understand what they are trying to do there, the name change is just incomprehensible to me
Ngl the challenger title now isnt an award its an insult lol. Might as well replace it with nolifer.
Oh that’s stupid so it’s kinda like Marvel Rivals now?
It would be a lot cooler to call it "Overwatch" if they really wanted to change the name to something, it would be ON brand.
Valorant did that for a season. People hated it. "I'm Valorant in Valorant" sounded dumb. If you wanted to see videos or streamers that were Valorant ranked, it was difficult to search.
They renamed to "Radiant" the next season.
So Roverwatch it is
Blackwatch
Nah, Valorant did that during the beta and everyone kept getting confused.
Call it topwatch
Then I want Bottomwatch to be a thing
It's called /r/moiramains
Underlisten
apex predator in apex, so maybe overwatch agent? that sounded kinda meh. Maybe Hero? That does sound a bit too similar to Champion though idk
That's pretty good actually, "Overwatch Agent" is on brand and not confusing.
"look mom, I'm an overwatch agent"
I’m not even close to t500 but seeing someone in the top 10 with not that many wins when people further down had a lot more was weird. Something definitely needed to change, just not this way
A problem I’ll never have
Wow that is the dumbest shit ever. Did they actually do that? Why would you ever change Top 500!!!
This is an issue that will never affect me so trying to convince me to care about it is going to take a LOT.
That is kinda why I made this post.
It affects almost nobody. It's not going to get the outcry that game issues do.
But I do feel like it's completely nonsensical and I want to voice my displeasure about it.
honestly i feel like it’s accurate. this isn’t the t500 at all anymore it’s just who’s the most unemployed
Except they'd probably be wrong. Top 500 is/was the top 500 players in each region by each role + open queue. So in reality there were theoretically 6000 players who could be "top 500", which is a little silly.
Ow team is know for fuck ups, it’s what they do. Just look at the history of the game. F up after f up.
Overwatch making good decisions : -103929 Good Ideas: 4 maybe?
Challenger seems to be newbie title yea

Lol it's always been fraudulent
What a non issue lol, this subreddit has been really bad these past few weeks ngl
Top 500 lost any sense of being iconic a very very long time ago. I'm in gold games with people that have the top 500 icon every once in a while, because they were top 500 on console or they were top 500 in one of the other game modes that no one plays, etc... so yeah, top 500 hasn't really been iconic since like... season 4 or OW1, bro.
Tbh as a support one trick I'd probably be gold if i ever played tank lol
Sure, that makes sense.
Nobody cares about the icon, the title is what counts.
None of it means anything right now, that's my point.
And why not? Besides the icon?
Already answered that.
Nothing you said discredits why T500 on role queue doesn't mean anything.
ogs might remember that in the first iteration of ow ranked, challenger was the lowest ow rank in ow beta
It overtly sounds like a newbie rank. A challenger of what? Walking a flight of stairs? Peeing without putting your pants down to you ankles?
Thinking you know better than a giant mega corporation is absolutely fucking wild.
Yeah like the giant mega corp doesnt mess up with balance changes, health changes, hitbox changes and then they revert. You sound like you have never worked in a mega corporation, ive seen corps mess up big time too, from big ass people in financial dept falling for phishing emails, to stupid decisions of scale that you wont believe.
I actually agree with you
I'm a fucking commercial fisherman with an English major
This giant mega corporation should have 100 better qualified people checking this decision
But in this case I can't fathom how they decided this was the right one
"Dont you guys have phones?" Yeah bro, this corpo truly is infaliable. This Blizzard is a spoiled talentless brat burning through his inheritance.
