Heya!
My friends noticed how I say "gg" after every game, no matter if we win, lose, get stomped or stomp the others. They started a discussion about saying it after every match makes it lose meaning.
I say for 2 reasons, 1. it helps me move on to the next game mentally and 2. No matter the outcome of the game, I hope it was good.
How often do you say "gg" and how does it feel seeing it in chat after a rough match?
I noticed that only winners say GG in my lobbies
That's interesting. The winners in my lobbies always say "gg ez" or "lol"
When I get wiped by the other team I always type zzz or gg ez to be funny lol. At the end of the day it’s a game.
when I get curb stomped I say “gg close game” 😭😭😭
I say "there's more where that came from, buddy"
I'm sorry, but that's hilarious. At least it's creative
Love that
I do this too!
Word of warning… you can still get banned for it. I’ve done it numerous times and everyone usually laughs (my intention). But one day I logged in and got flagged for it.
You can get banned for the sun being at particular angle ona Tuesday. The report system is easy to abuse
you can get flagged for not saying anything if enough people report you
When I’m playing tank and I get dogged I always say “gg tank diff” or “gg mtd”
Anyone who says ez is a red flag
Gg ez meanwhile it was 2 to 2 in OT doesn’t seem like it was so ez
Naaaaah if one of my teammates does this I always point out how it wasn't easy at all, or just tell them not to say stuff like that cause it's just a looser behavior and ruins everyone's mood except your own.
Yes, winners will say GR when they win rounds, in control for example, but then stay silent when they lose, even in the same game. And then winners say GG when the game ends and losers just immediately leave. It's like, is it only a good round or good game when you win it?
I witness this all the time in quickplay. 😂 Had a game where my team got stomped and someone on the enemy team had the audacity to say ‘gg.’ Next game they were on my team and my team got stomped again and they were completely silent that time.
People only like to say ‘gg’ when they win.
I've been seeing my team throw out gg more often after a loss which is nice and makes me chill a bit if the match was especially frustrating. But it sure is annoying when the enemy just wipes you and then their best (or worst) player spams out the "gg" in 1/100th of a second. Or their team is obviously a 3-4 stack and all of them shit out a gg after they just played a quickplay game like it's the fucking OWL and my side had a support that could have been AFK and we would have gotten the same value.
yes, but i have ever see it without GG but with some EZ from the little 8 years junkrat enemy and "trashteam" from my teammate....
This. I felt like "GG" was done by both sides... when I was growing up as a teenager. And this was back in freaking 1999.
Times have changed now. I too, only notice the winning side typing GG or GR (good round). And while I personally am not bothered by it, I can absolutely understand why others would be.
I don't even care to type anymore but if I do, I'll say "good job" in team chat only. Nothing goes to match chat.
I say “gg both teams” when it was a close AND my team won 🤣 otherwise I just disappear
This. But reddit comments would have you believe that the majority of players say it win or lose. Almost like how everyone on reddit is diamond+... People are funny.
Nah I play quick play as a casual and usually people from both team say it.
You should actually count it, because its very heavily skewed to winning players. Thats not even counting "gr".
I think you guys are being a bit naive in assuming people are being pure and not trying to tilt a losing team. Videogame players are not known for their maturity
GG at the end of a match, win/lose/stomp/whatever is older than some of the people playing OW.
If it's up to me, I'm not letting shitty people take it over, so I say "gg!" after every game.
proud to say i’m a hard stuck gold 4. no shame here i love it
I always say gg when I lose, and I'll include a compliment if the enemy team played really well. I play tanks and will often endorse/ send friend requests to enemy tanks that pushed me to play well or hard-carried their team. I wish more people embraced having fun instead of focusing solely on winning and being hypercompetitive
I say it if its a good match. If i get stomped or stomp the enemy team I don't say it
i say gg win or lose. steam roll or close game. just a respect and sportsmanship thing
my experience is the same
Exactly. Personally, if you only say it when you win, don't say it all. Kinda douchey
Same, it’s like they’re saying “Boohoo loser, sucks to suck now have this golden sticker so you stop crying.”
I’ve noticed this too, that’s why whenever I play with my friends and we get stomped and someone on the enemy team says gg in chat I mock them in a nerd voice because I’m tilted
They especially say GG when the losing team has like 1 thrower or 1 dc like... lol. OFC it's a GG for you cause you won, it's a bad game for the team with the dc.
They're obviously pretty young and unfamiliar with the phrase... It doesn't need to have this super deep meaning. It's just like a little handshake after the game.
Edit: I usually hate everyone and everything on this subreddit, but it nearly makes me shed a man tear to see how many people try to have good sportsmanship...it's so refreshing considering how absolutely fucking juvenile this community is.
It's like 'good morning' doesn't mean 'it's a good morning'. gg means 'thanks for the game'.
Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?
Gendalf, dear, smarty pants help dwarfs by themselves
Good morning does not come from "its a good morning" but "have a good morning".
You're wishing someone a good morning.
That's not the point. People are saying 'gg' means 'it was a good game'. That's not what gg means. It means 'thanks for the game'.
Similarly, 'good morning' doesn't literally mean 'good morning'.
I think that's a personal choice. I don't say good morning when I don't think it is. I'll just say morning
And that's fine, as long as you don't interpret people saying 'good morning' as being salty.
I was a very unathletic kid. Still, my parents made me participate in some soccer and basketball. No matter how the game went, it was always custom for each team to line up and walk past the other team, shaking hands and saying "good game." It's a show of sportsmanship. It shows that it's not about the win, but the game itself. How is that a bad thing now?
I remember playing t-ball, baseball and football. This was standard after every game, We'd line up and shake hands saying good game to each individual player! I'm happy to have experienced it.
Because Overwatch players don’t have experience with the outside
This. It's just sportsmanship, I think it's even more important for your mental to say it when you lose
It’s so obvious who didn’t participate in competitive sports when they’re bewildered by an iota of sportsmanship instead of toxicity after a game
I agree but it's not even just sports...it's just like having a baseline level of maturity that comes with a little bit of age...this should be easily understood by humans by the age of like...20.
Exactly, gg is just the whole “2-4-6-8 who do we appreciate?” thing we used to do at the end of sports games. It didn’t matter if you win or lose, you’re respecting your opponent and the match you just had.
Exactly, it's a handshake. I analogize OW to basketball a lot, and you can really tell who never played team sports in these kind of conversations. If you go to the pickup court and the other team demolishes you, but aren't absolute dicks about it you still dap up at the end just to essentially say "thanks for playing, its not a game if im here shooting by myself".
Even if you lose you got a sweat and get a chance to get better because you know what others are doing better than you. Just because they're better, or you're better, doesn't mean it's not worth playing the game.
But for some reason, when it's online people seem confused you wouldn't just be your worst and pettiest self at the end of a competition.
Couldn't have said it better myself... God forbid someone thanks the other team for playing a game together... It's so crazy how people truly see the enemy team as actual enemies. We're all just people playing a video game together...
It’s funny how many aspects like mindset and teamwork from team sports applies equally to competitive team games…
… and ironically it shows how unsocialized so many fucking gamers are that they can’t grasp simple concepts like the ones you mentioned lol
It sucks mainly because it's a team game, and their wood rankedchild mentality directly affects you and your results...People throw in the towel so so easily, when a game is like 15% finished they're ready to just forfeit. I'm so so glad that Overwatch has never added a forfeit button...it would drive me absolutely insane...
I couldn't ever even begin to recall how many times a game gets turned around and a few people on one of the teams have completely given in.
I also say gg, or more precisely, ggwp, after every match. I also like dropping a glhf at the start.
As you said, it's just a sportsmanship handshake thing, it really isn't that deep.
People love taking it out of context and distorting it just because it can often be used ironically. However, ignoring those people who say it to hurt others and the people who complain about the ones who do is the whole point of doing it.
Keep the toxicity at bay and ignore the bad apples. Keep fighting the good fight and uphold sportsmanship.
Just plain ol sportsmanship.
It’s like high fiving the other team after a school football game
I see it like sharing hands after a game irl . It's an acknowledgement of playing the game .
Yeah exactly. Like in soccer the teams would line up and all shake hands to say good game. It’s definitely an acknowledgement and sportsmanship thing
People care about this stuff? I just type gg without thinking atp
Yeah same, sometimes I type "gg" and then type it in response to myself bc I didn't even realize I sent the first one.
LOL
Haha I do this too!
It matters to me. If I just finished a game where we steamrolled with 1 death on our entire team I'm not typing "gg" after that. That feels rude
I’ll say it if someone from the losing team says it first, in order to be respectful. But I would never just throw it out there first after a stomp, that’s a dick move.
THIS EXACTLY THIS.
If you win and the enemy team writes it, respond back. This is the sportsmanship behind it, humble in victory, graceful in defeat.
I lost? Ah shucks, GG!
I won? Maybe this wasn't a good game for the enemy team, let's wait and see if they even think this was a good game.
Nobody fucking understands this and then insists that GG has some kind of culture derived from IRL sports. Nobody, and I say this very blatantly, nobody IRL would ever shake an Overwatch player's hand if they behaved the same way they do in the game. If I play a round of chess against someone IRL and the entire game they drop comments like "Sybau, I fuck your mom, wow nice rook play I bet you're into men, fuck you f****" and then when they win they do a whole ass victory dance, yell "EZ HAHAHAHAHA" and reach their hand out for a handshake, that guy is getting his nosebone shattered, he's not getting a "gg" or a handshake.
I wish we normalized holding subhumans accountable for acting subhuman, because in Overwatch we really don't. Quite the opposite, we try to normalize writing GG to people like this when they win and taunt.
I always say "gg team" in team chat for games like that.
as others have said, it's like a little handshake after the match. Imagine a game of chess. Let's say your a complete newbie and know just the basic rules and your opponent is a 3000 elo GM. He completely stomps you in 10 moves tops. Now, would it be rude for him to get up and shake your hand, or get up, turn around and walk away? That's what GG is for me personally. Even if 5 people on the enemy team counter me, even if I want to drop a little salty message (not a toxic one) to the enemy Sombra who was fucking me up the whole game, I'll say GG and then proceed with whatever else I've been planning on doing
The problem is that you are saying it to others who might perceive it differently.
Don’t get me wrong, I used to always say it but I had to switch to typing nothing in some situations because it’s perceived similar to ‘gg ez’. That’s what they said to me themselves, complaining on how rude it was
It’s a sign of respect for the effort they put in to the game. If they interpret it as condescension or gloating then that’s their problem to deal with; I always say gg, win or lose, and I appreciate seeing those on the winning team saying it even when I’ve lost.
Now gg ez on the other hand…
Edit: ah scratch that I misread your reply, my mistake. Agreed, if it’s a total steamroll game then I get not saying it.
By not typing gg I am implicitly expressing dissatisfaction
I say gg if I perceived it to be a gg. If it was a stomp in either direction then it was not a gg so I say nothing about it. Calling a stomp a good game is insincere imo, I only say what I mean
Just understand that not everyone sees it that way, so when they say gg they aren't trying to be toxic.
Very similar thing, just a difference in intentionality. User A is trying not to be toxic, and User B is not trying to be toxic
Obviously everyone can do what they want, but I don't know how "gg" after a stomp could ever be interpreted as toxic though. You got stomped, you say "gg", it clearly means "i'm not mad, good job everyone". You stomped, you say "gg", it clearly means "i respect you even if i beat you, i'm not going to say it was easy or mock you"
user C is just ragebaiting, and user D genuinely wants everyone to hang themselves
You have to be blind and empathetically numb to think writing “gg” after you completely stomped the enemy is not going to be perceived as rude, no matter what your intentions were. It still says good game and if it’s a stomp either way, then it’s just not a good game
If you finished destroying a team in football and just walked off without shaking their hand because you're so much better it wasn't close, most people wouldn't describe you as just being more sincere. There is an etiquette to it all.
The losing team might not want to shake your hand because they're upset and that's usually more fine if not seen as a little childish. Unevenly matched games happen in sports all the time though so might be a different culture compared to strictly SBMM video games where everyone is expecting a perfectly mirrored team.
Offline sports has gestures of respect. In your example that was a handshake, in my type of martial arts we help each other back up and bow but what we don't do is lie about the quality of the spar
You can be a good sportsman without saying gg after a bad game
In my mind even if it's a stomp the GG represents that I still respect the opposing team, regardless of if I stomped or if I was stomped on. It's a show that I have no hard feelings etc
When they pull out the "ez" despite bottom scoring on their team, no gg. When they say "ez" despite losing? gg
It always those who to worst that does ez to inflate their ego because they got carried lol
I say it as a joke because I KNOW I got carried lol
That is kind of standard that the people most likely to pull "EZ" are the dead weights carried by their team to victory.
I usually say it unless there was toxicity from one side or the other.
Every game. Ever since my past CSGO days as a younger lad , I built the habit of just a quick glhf and a quick gg before and after every game. Doesn’t hurt, though some might take it as toxic. If it’s an especially good game, down to the wire, etc I’ll just add on something else or say something to emphasize that.
Its crazy people perceive glhf as toxic..
There are people who are just looking to be mad at something, it doesn't matter what.
It signifies good sportsmanship and your friends have no clue about that.
It’s always nice to see gg and never annoying. Reminds me I play with nice ppl sometimes
Maybe I'm just from an older generation where when we played a game in sports win, lose, draw, close or stomp, we always told the other team "Good game."
It's a good reminder that it is just a game and the whole purpose is to have fun.
Yeah helps me set my mind right that its just a game too. Always glhf beginning and gg gl next match everyone at end.
I remember going down a line and shaking hands with the opposing team. Just a crowd of "Good game, good game, good game, good game, good game..."
I find gg as a “thanks for playing”, a neutral response.
I find ggwp to be condescending if the speaker stomped the other team.
Pretty much this
Whenever someone makes a comment about me saying gg i tell them it's common sportsmanship and that im sorry they never had that experience growing up
There is no greater demonstration these people have never played sports than being antagnized by "gg", it's honestly hilarious. Nothing in QP can match the pain of being on the other side of losing a championship in sports and we all still lined the fuck up and appreciated our opponents. Good lord, this world has become so soft. You ask somebody to counter a flank in OW chat and you get a ban. You appreciate your opponents effort with "gg", also ban.
i think it’s annoying when it very clearly was not a good game and i just want to move on to the next match without feeling patronized. especially because it’s always exclusively the winning team saying it
That's basically the equivalent of not wanting to shake hands after a sports game because you lost badly.
If you feel patronized by a GG after a loss you'd want to take a look at yourself as to why that is. Once you detach from the "gg", you'll easily realize that it oftenmeans very little.
GG ez (and sometimes GG <3) on the other hand... means you slap the hand away lol.
I always say gg. Mostly in global chat, but sometimes I limit it to teamchat only if I feel like we stomped the enemy, because I don't want to come across as disrespectful. If a stadium match goes to 3-3 I also like to begin the final round with "this is already a good game, no matter who will win this round".
GG is fine if the game is a good game.
Having it said after getting absolutely stomped by the other team feels shitty imo.
Then again that may be tism
i'd rather a sweat tell me "gg" than stay quiet and act like i'm a bot not even worthy of parting words, yk what i mean?
I say "gg" after every game. It's the equivalent of shaking hands with your opponents post-sports games (at least when I was a kid we did this).
I say "ggwp" if it was an even match or just an exceptional game.
I say "ggvwp" when I'm MOVED by a game's events.
We can't forget the "ily [insert enemy combatant that gave me a good challenge]"
We should continue perpetuating good vibes in an environment that easily turns toxic.
wp, I like this attitude of yours! :)
I'm honestly quite surprised to see how many folks call it lame after they lose.
Maybe it's a generational thing but I always say GG win or lose. Even if I'm getting stomped I'll just say it before match end lol.
I find saying gg after a one-sided stomp to be in poor taste
Saying gg after you stomp someone is pretty rude. That was not a good game, it was entirely an unfair one.
If it's a close match regardless of who wins, I say gg.
If the enemy stomps us, I say gg.
If my team stomps the enemy, I wait until one of the enemies say gg then I say gg. I know there's a minority of people who feel as if saying gg after stomping the opponent is disrespectful (I don't agree with that mentality), but I'll still delay my gg just in case.
The only time I really don't say gg is if there are leavers, I forget to, or when I'm autofilled in the last second few seconds of the game in qp.
I don't think gg is toxic but I don't wanna see it after you stomped me in the ground, it's like having terrible sex then rolling over with a cigar to brag about how amazing it was when it was just good for you; I show the same courtesy to the enemy, if they say it first then I'll say it
gg doesn't mean much to me anymore
But also I quickly notice a lot of people will only say gg when they win or will type gg ez which makes it just annoying to see.
So overall, I understand that's it meant to be an innocent handshake after a match but some players use it in an annoying way sadly so I started to care less about it.
Theres a lot of people who only say it when they win. Like a humble brag
It only bothers me when it so obviously one sided or we had a team mate leave and its 5v4 and they still say "gg"
People here are saying they always write gg. But in the actual game it's usually only the winners. It doesn't matter what it supposed to mean, people use it as "I had fun". That's why many are annoyed by seing it after onesided games. Because it does look like bragging and often is bragging.
When it wasn't onesided, nobody cares. It doesn't make anyone feel better. So what's the point in sending it at all?
It’s lame to say it after an obvious stomp.
Ngl, it kinda feels obnoxious after a stomp. Nobody likes getting stomped. It's frustrating when you can't do anything to the enemy team. Last thing I want to see is the enemy type gg when it clearly wasn't a good match. Seems like gloating or mockery to me. Obviously this isn't everyone's intention, but in the heat of the moment, all I think is the enemy being a prick. Maybe it's just my own feelings of inferiority/insecurity in my ability. Something I'm trying to work on. Anyway that's how I feel about the enemy typing gg after getting rolled. Personally, I'm on console and they don't give a lot of time after a match to type so I rarely get to sadly, even after some really good games.
Eh, you are fairly on point. A simple test is to respond "not really." 9 times out of 10, you'll see the mask slip. That's when the gloating starts.
IMO gg goes back to StarCraft days when you play until someone says “gg” which is essentially conceding defeat. Now we just say it at the end of games as some phatic response.
Personally I say it if it was indeed a good game.
I say gg when it was a good game meaning teams seemed pretty evenly matched. Sometimes if they’re okay matched.
I say GG if it was a Good Game. I'll say WP otherwise, though if its truly a shitshow then I wont say anything at all.
I only say gg if it was a really close and tense game
i've never once thought about a gg longer than a half second after it's been typed by someone
The strat is to say ez after you lose
I do this if we get stomped 🤣 maybe a little toxic but it's the truth
I'll say it if it was a really close game. It makes no difference to me if anyone says it though.
I say GG every single time, unless it was an absolute stomp, then it just doesn't make sense. I do like saying GG after my team loses, because it's humbling and requires me to calm down inside and not get too salty lol.
Technically you really shouldn't say it at all.
Saying GG increases your chance of being reported by someone bitter, whether it's win or lose.
But I will sometimes say it after what felt like a good game, or an acknowledgement back to the enemy typing it to us.
I usually don’t say ggs after a hard stomp. If you were on the winning team it feels rude. And if you were on the losing team obviously you did not have a good game lol. But I say it every other time win or lose
I say gg if it was a genuinely good back and forth match that was fun. Saying gg after it was a one-sided stomp always feels like adding salt to the wound.
i don't say it too often tbh, usually after a really good game i'll say it. i noticed it's usually people on the winning team that say it lol
Only after an actually good game. A “GG” after a match with clearly lopsided matchmaking doesn’t improve morale for anyone, especially if you were on the winning team.
ive said gg wp after every match for years now. its standard courtesy in pretty much every comptetive game. anyone who gets mad after seeing gg in chat just has a weak mental
90 percent of people say it after they win- and it NEVER feels good for the losing team, ever. So in my eyes you are saying GG for yourself- as if to show you are some beacon of sportsmanship.
It’s not that, and it doesn’t feel like that.
Never. Cant care enough to type meaningless shit
A bit disrespectful if it is a stomp IMO.
I just find it annoying if it’s said after a complete stomp. The losing team just had the worst match of their life and someone has the audacity to say “gg” lmao
Nearly every game, unless it was a humiliating stomp on our part and I don't know my team mates, as I've occasionaly been copiously insulted for doing so.
I say it 90% of games bc its just good sportsmanship. Unless its an absolutely horrendous match, then I just say "g"
I say gg pretty much every round unless my team got stomped
Sometimes I type gg sometimes I dont, most times if someone says something, in response I'll type something silly. If my team is throwing its usually on qp, if they throwin in comp your name goes onto my sticky note section on my pc. I'll do my best to get you bestie (๑•̀ㅂ•́)و✧ it'll be one of the most frustrating games we'll have against each other (ง ͠ಥ_ಥ)ง Lol but gg y'all
I only say it if I win, if I don’t win it’s not a “good game” unless it was really close and both teams slapped no one was holding their team back and it was really close.
I literally never say it, like, ever. If I actually had fun I say something more than just "gg" like "that was a fun game guys, thanks" and if it wasn't a particularly good game I say nothing.
Kids today don’t understand sportsmanship, they’d rather dip their virtual balls into your mouth repeatedly whenever they are victorious.
I say “wp” to show sportsmanship to the other players.
I say “gg” only when I genuinely think it was a good game.
If it was a one-sided stomp, I wouldn’t call it a “gg.”
I guess saying "gg" is a habbit for a lot of players and lost its original meaning.
Your friends aren’t familiar and are taking it literally, while you’re just trying to be sportsmanlike.
I like typing "gl next" nowadays. just seems less toxic to me, even after a stomp. If the game was really good then I'll pop a gg in chat, but I don't use GG that liberally.
I say it after every game except for the most toxic or 1 sided (favoring us or them), just for the sake of sportsmanship and closure.
I only really say it if we're talking during the match
I say it during the close hard fought rounds usually. Those are the ones that truly test my ability so regardless if its a win or loss i throw it out
Better than ‘free’ or ‘ez’ 😂
I say it when it was actually good. If it's a matchmaker made hell or a one sided smurf shitshow, I will answer "lol no" if someone on the stomping team says "gg", or "sorry" if my team was the stomper.
I don't gg when we steamroll the other team, comes off as disingenuous and rude imo
I specifically make sure to say it after a 1v1 with random characters in arcade since its so much more personal
I say gg love u every time. No matter the outcome.
you are kinda both right?
its obv basic to the point that noone really gets any major emotions from reading gg amd that is obviously coming from the fact that its widely used. however, if you stop doing that now, noone will perceove GG any differently, if you pivot over to only saying gg when it was a truly good game, it wont have anymore meaning. no harm is done if you just keep the same behavior up for your personal reasons.
on the other hand, you can just say something more elaborate to really convey an actual good game, right? like saying 'good game everyone!' is already gonna have that desired effect.
Only gg if you lose.
I started just saying “ty team” so no one gets randomly upset
If there was a leaver, if it was a stomp, I give the guys automating their "gg" a greeting from the automated report system.
I say it almost always, though if we stomped enemy team and they were clearly tilted during the match, I limit it to team chat, same with compliments. I'll always try and compliment a team mate (win or lose) because it gives good vibes all around, but I only limit it to team chat so the enemy team doesn't think I'm saying "diff".
I'll do it unless it's a true blowouteother way because then it was definitively not a good game.
Before and after every game, I type: "I wish everyone delicious pizza." and in the end type "Jee Jeez".
I say "GG" when my team wins but i say "BAD GAME, SAD CHEATERS... SAD SICK SMALL CHEATERS" when my team loses.
gg is a simple and short phrase, it doesn't need to be used with impact... imagine getting out of an actual good game and you just type "gg". Like huh? Put some passion into it, "GG!!!" "Wow gg" "insane match gg!" "Dang what a game, gg!"
Other than that sure I say gg almost every game, it's just to let the whole lobby know that I acknowledged the game and their time.
I only say GG if it was a close match like on control it comes down to 3rd round and both of us are at 99%
I think saying GG on winning team when you stomped the other team is toxic—not good sportsmanship. Say it in team.
The only time I don’t say it is when we get rolled and I’m pissed at my throwing teammates or we roll the other team and I don’t want them thinking I’m being sarcastic.
I normally say ggs after every game, unless we get absolutely rolled and the game wasn't good at all. A good game, to me, is when both sides are evenly matched to the point where losing still feels rewarding.
I just take the term at face value. If it wasn't a good game either because we wiped them or vice-versa I just don't say it.
When my team gets rolled I report the ppl who say gg for abusive message and then I normally log in next day with action taken against a player you reported message
Generally I say it, but if it’s a real stomping sometimes saying gg can feel snotty. But especially if it’s qp, I try not to care too much about it.
fun debate
I say it when it was a good game meaning both sides gave actual effort
If I see gg from a winner I think unsportsmanlike conduct. If I see the losing team say it it's sportsmanlike. Double standard in my opinion.
I only really say it when it’s an actual good game. Whether I win or lose, if it’s a good back and forth where it could’ve been anyone’s game, I say it. Complete stomp either way, I don’t.
I only say GG if it was actually a good game, as in both sides put up a good fight, nice back and forth
I say gg if it was an even match and we lost or win. If we get our shit kicked in or if we kick their shit in, I don't because we didn't earn that "gg" since it didn't feel like we fought for that placement.
I say GG every game. and glhf. Habit from Starcraft 2. I like it.
It’s called being a good sport, it’s not that deep
I interpret gg as someone smirking while typing tbh like I never think it's genuine.
Im ngl when i see the winners saying gg it does seem sarcastic but thats bc im salty i think its really nice of you and it seems like you are appreciating the efforts of both teams
it's called basic sportsmanship.
starting a discussion about it "losing meaning" to me just sounds like they think you actually only say it when you genuinely think it was a good game.
that's not how it's used, and saying good game after every game extends back to real life sports where it's done for sportsmanship and respect for your fellow player. refusing to say it when you got stomped makes you look like a sore loser.
it can't lose a meaning it never had.
I played sports. It’s etiquette
Saying GG no matter what should be basic game etiquette you should always do. GG ez should gain an instant ban/suspension.
I feel like it’s pretty common in both physical and video games. Did they not line up to say “good game” to their opponents after playing a sport? Or were they the little shits who’d smack everyone’s hands really hard?
I always say GLHF at the start and GG at the end, even if my team loses. It’s just good sportsmanship. I tend to often get endorsements for being a good sport and have been level 5 for as long as I can remember.
If it genuinely wasn't a good game and you stomped the other team, don't say it unless someone on the other team says it. If you actually had a ton of back and forth and it felt like an actual match, then a gg gets sent because it actually was a good game. GG after stomping someone feels condescending
I’d rather the winners of an awful, poorly-matched stomp just say nothing. The annoying versions of “gg” with emojis, hearts, pet names, and passive aggressive taunting when the game sucked is not cute.
Yeah gg isn't that big of a deal. As you said it's more of a mental thing anyway. People are weird af sometimes and idk, I've played some of the most toxic and wild csgo/cs2 lobbies (they don't filter chat bc censorship) and people still say gg. It's just a thing that doesn't need explained.. even people who don't play videogames probably know it for normal sports
It is also used in younger sports (handshaking, etc when older) but idk, I guess a lot of people don't play sports
Part of it is a pride thing like, no matter what, we did in fact play this game together and are both human.. now let's all go to dairy queen. It's a comradery
Just keep saying it, you understand. Who cares what they think. It never hurts to have decency
Edit: only saying GG when you win is cringe
I say GG after every game too, win or lose. I also take note of who says GG in the chat - if ever anyone on the losing team says it, I tend to give them an endorsement -- they are almost always level 5 endorsement anyway lol. I like to endorse the non-toxic players!
i say gg mostly when the game was close, or when i had a fun time. if we absolutely crushed the enemy team, out of respect i don't say it
i just feel like it’s good sportsmanship to say it whether you win or lose tbh
You only say GG if it was actually a close and good/fun game. You do not say GG if you or the other team get absolutely rolled and destroyed. Getting destroyed the entire match and seeing GG is like kicking someone while they are already down. It’s disrespectful because it in fact was not a good game but clearly one sided and resulted because of poor matchmaking.
I say GG after every game. I thought everyone does it that way. GG, to me, is a polite way to say goodbye to my teammates and opponents. It also conveys "no hard feelings" if I lost, and "you fought well" if I won. I find it to be polite and shows I'm a human and I know they're humans too and we should all get along
"Loses its meaning"
Lol what. The meaning is good game. You're being polite and it's a good thing to say after a game regardless of winning or losing
Sportsmanship is a lost social technology, the benefits of which are not immediately obvious.
Generally I reserve it for those matches that felt really good, hard to say it when it was just a steam roll.
Why is this a post
Don't play OW anymore but I do this every game in other games. I do it for the same reason. Sometimes people will try and call me out when we get stomped but I just say it was good for them not for us. It's true lmao
i like saying it when it was genuinely a challenging and fun game, a good game even
I think it's generally respectful, unless used in cases before the game is over and when it was a complete steamroll. On the latter, it can sound patronizing.
I always GG in team chat if we win. Except if it's a stomp, a stomp in either direction means a gg is salt in the wound.
If we lose but I truly felt like it was a good match I also GG which I should do more than I do since frustration and competitiveness often gets the better of me.
I say it after every game. Why not?
If I win, it's a good game.
If I lose, I can admit we lost to a better team.
Had a few games where people used gg as an insult after trash talking all game. That was the final straw for me turning off text chat. Now anytime I see people typing gg after they stomped it just makes me annoyed because I know for a fact most of them only say gg when they win a match.
I’ll only say if it was a close game or an actual fun and challenging game not just venture and sombra with lifeweaver and mercy and zarya pocketing vendetta what just happens to me yesterday. I only basically say when the enemy team win or loses and it wasn’t a cheesed game
If you say it every match, it loses its meaning for me, at least. I appreciate the sentiment, but I appreciate unique messages more. I'm either silent or try to make a joke or wish people happy holidays, I like saying something unique
