If it’s made before 1970, the carbon tetrachloride in the wax is very toxic. Depending on where it was made and sold it could have carbon tetrachloride even if it was made later. Post-1970 American lava lamps use a different formulation that’s a trade secret, but it definitely contains mineral oil, dyes, and polyethylene glycol. In that case it’s safe to just handle, but burning it is still a bad idea unless you want cancer.
Yknow, I'm just realizing: my ex wife used to work there back in college - we began dating right after - and she would always drag me into a BBW, as she called it, "for the smells!" And god did I hate that. Those smells gave me migraines immediately. I should've seen that as a red flag and gotten out early, but alas, our marital home smelled like a BBW. Not that that is what did in our marriage, but I hate going over to her place now with the smells.. (we share custody of our kids)
I know, it got me every time she said it, too 😂 I'm like "you know what that means, right?" She had no idea. She also grew up using the word "jizz" interchangeably with anything gooey or puss-filled. So when she was in high school and her cat got into a fight and her friends came over and saw her cat with yellow puss on its ear, they were like "ew what's that?" And she was like "oh just some jizz." It was a classic record-scratch moment lol her friends then explained what jizz was and she confronted her parents who'd taught her that alternate meaning of jizz and thought it was hilarious.
Yes. The shit in OG lava lamp wax (carbon tetra-fucking-chloride) is not only toxic by itself, but also produces toxic byproducts when burnt. Even in modern lava lamps, they add undisclosed chemicals to the wax to get it to behave, which almost certainly can't be good for you either.
Yeah, carbon tet can produce phosgene, chlorine gas, and hydrochloric acid when heated in air. These are chemical weapons and can kill you or leave you with permanent lung damage. DO NOT DO THIS OP
I have had an original Mathmos lava lamp, bought itbin the 90s. There even was a sticker on the cap that the contents were not to be messed with (can't recall exact phrasing).

Thanks for making us all scroll back up and look.
I think that's the funniest one I've seen yet.
Thank you so much :3
How are you (seemingly) not participating in r/honeyfuckers ? lmao
What is deadly? Is something toxic?

Frankly I’m surprised everyone who has worked at a bath and body works hasn’t developed every cancer with how that store reeks

Out of context I know what you mean by BBW but just know the internet has ruined me
😩😩😩
For the smells
Swamps of dagobah.
did you really?
Yeah, they did.
Now that’s something I haven’t heard in a long while

I also worked at BBW in my college years and this whole comment thread has made my day.
Let me add that my house smells proudly of cats and dogs, and I haven't burned a Signature Three-Wick or plugged in a Wallflower in many years.
"what???"
I assume that would be nuggies and cake?
Sweaty BBWs. Where do I sign up?

Her nose is fried.
My grandma & mom used to drag me into those stores. I thought I was the only one getting immediate headaches in there
Sorry to hear that. Hope things are ok for you right now.

The carbon tet is used on monkeys in animal testing because it gives them liver cancer 100% of the time.
Yeah, I thought there's basically some sort of glycerin water in the lamp and the wax is just coloured paraffin.
Technology Connections did a cool video about making his own lava lamp.
TL;DW - to get some better results he experimented with using brake cleaner which can be pretty nasty.
I don't KNOW if this particular lamp contains deadly shit, but probably don't do what the OP is posting I guess?
Technology Connections is one of the coolest people on YouTube I've seen. So entertaining, so useful, so true to his mission.
Any mention of Alec gets a like.
You even linked to his channel, i hope some wealthy person showers you in awards
I’m recovering from surgery and read tldw as too long didnt wead and laughed but it hurts i cannot laugh
OP, ELABORATE OR ELSE
The profile pic really helps with the threatening tone
Please don't eat, sit on, or diddle us
Then you'd better hope OP says something about wtf is so deadly here ◉_◉
Thank you for wearing a suit btw 🫡
It’s lava duh
Damn I wish mods required people to put why something is deadly. These kinds of posts are turds in a punch bowl.
They do, and you can report a post for just that reason.
Burning some random hydrocarbon product you find is always a bad idea
I love OOP's comment that's just "Not my best idea"

Phosgene at home starter pack!
But they saved themselves a nickel!

If there are any chlorinated hydrocarbons in there, it can absolutely hurt in the short term
