• Honestly didn’t think I’d make it long enough to ever need my own insurance but here we are

dude me neither!! then it just came up out of nowhere and I’m like when the hell did this happen??

now I’m almost 30 it goes by so fast and only gets faster. I feel like I don’t even have time anymore to consider not being alive because who’s going to pay my electric bill to keep the lights on for my pets lol.

Honestly this, the fact I have to take care of my cat is pretty much one of the only things that puts off the ideation long enough to slowly, gradually not do it. Like “virtually kicking the can down the road” another day, and then another day, because who else would feed the cat if I’m gone.

i mean realistically that’s exactly how you get through it’s taking it day by day

That's also how my adhd procrastination works, "I'll do it tomorrow", tomorrow comes "alright maybe not today but definitely tomorrow" repeat

oh thats EXACTLY what happened now i wear glasses instead of contacts tht i get from zenni and havent had a physical for some time

Girl stop. We are not almost 30 💀 Dont do this to me.

yes we are!!! we are closer to 30 than mid 20’s get with it!!

My 11th birthday sucked so bad and I remember telling myself that my 12th birthday would be better and then being like “what’s the point I won’t make it there anyway”.

And now it is more than half my life ago.

I’m happy for you being able to cope and make it through to now. I still struggle to envision 30, it’s not uncommon for me to go throughout my day and wonder when do I get the “Wikipedia treatment” as I call it, where they add the hyphen and end date.

  • American kids born after 2000: go see every doctor you possibly can while you’re on your parents insurance

sincerely, a woman who procrastinated and now has shitty health insurance through work

Do you opt for the highest premium you can or settle for the cheapest like most of my friends? My work has fairly shit health insurance if you go with the cheapest but really good for the higher premiums it’s like $400 a year but I don’t even notice it as they take it from my paychecks and I barely ever go to doctors I just like being prepared

Edit: just checked it’s $456.60 a year compared to $108.00 on the lowest plan

Man, mine is about 400 each paycheck. That is because now I have my wife and our baby on the plan. It was just about 40ish bucks a paycheck for me, but as soon as you have a family boom.

I can't complain about my coverage though, I work in Healthcare industry so I already know where I'm better off using my plan.

    holy shit

It’s not a lie unfortunately, under my insurance, it’s “free” (still really high copays and whatnot), but as soon as you add a spouse it’s $300, and then add on any kids it goes up to $500+ a month

    $400 a year is crazy, it’s $400 a paycheck for most people

lol i have cheapest with the highest premium they take $150 out of every check and the deductible is $5K. then it only covers 20% of expenses for in network doctors and 80% once you hit $5K. I shopped on healthcare.gov and couldn’t find anything better.

The quality of health insurance really varies by state as I’ve lived in 3 now and this is by far the worst one.

    That's terrible :(

A 400 dollar premium isn't expensive at all........[in comparison to full priced premiums]

456 is still really good. Is that per pay period or per month?

    man i wish i had a $400 premium 😂

I would only opt for the cheapest premium if you're okay paying $100-300 out of pocket every time you go to the doctor. When you choose the cheapest premium, you're going for the highest deductible and until you pay off that deductible, a lot of the cost is going to fall on you.

That said, a lot of plans will fully cover things like annual appointments and certain preventative care. If you're in really good health and only need to see the doctor once a year, the cheap plan is fine. If you have more extensive health needs though, I'd look at other options (unless, again, you're okay with paying more out of pocket)

  • I got kicked off at 23 :'(

    21 here :(

I also got kicked off at 21. I thought that was standard, this is my first time hearing about it being 26.

If you don’t mind me asking how did you just get kicked off? Everyone told me that it isn’t as simple as that your parents going up and saying “hey I want this person removed” and then it’s done

I have older parents, and my dad retired early when I was 23. Apparently, it would have been really expensive to keep me on his new plan, so I got kicked off and had to switch to my employer's plan.

    Ah that makes sense then

Usually for all your kids too, you have a set rate no matter how many kids you have. So when I got my own, my dad still kept me on his because I have a sister 10 years younger than me and it costs the same to have me on there. The only way I can see that is if they’re the last kid to be an adult or an only child and their parents just stopped covering their children.

My family’s insurance is through my dads employer where they have a set rate for a whole family (any number of children). I’m an only child so it was cheaper for me to pay for my own insurance than stay on the family plan. All you have to do I think is to elect for the couples-only insurance instead of the family plan when it’s time to choose the next year’s insurance.

Idk if this is right or not, but I thought you get kicked off automatically if you’re financially independent. I became financially independent at 21, so before I turned 22, I had to sign up for my own plan

Edit: I learned you can’t be on your parents’ plan if they don’t claim you as a dependent on their taxes. Mine couldn’t because I wasn’t financially dependent anymore

Yeah same. Honestly though I was fine with it, my places of work since then have both had insurance that was not great but not terrible, and my parents helped me get through college.

  • Hey fellow 2000

Hello! Weird we got called out by this post for no reason.

  • The American healthcare system welcomes you into its cold embrace

  • We really really need a universal single payer healthcare system in this country. It’s a travesty that we don’t

seriously! the government and medical system are just so greedy 😞

We really do. Every other developed nation does

see that’s what really tickles me because if universal healthcare “doesn’t work” why is it working everywhere else lmao and if our system is so “superior” why wouldn’t everyone have it

Ian gon lie this year has been a real problem for me health wise so I feel this lol one of em im not gon mention but 2 months after that I ended up fracturing my right hand (dislocating the pinky side of my hand) if it wasn’t for my doctor marking it an urgent procedure I wouldn’t had got the surgery cause Ian have health insurance (that’s what the lady told me forgot her role)but she said that usually we don’t do surgeries if you don’t have insurance but such and such marked it down as Urgent

Got charged 10K+ for that whole ordeal

  • Y'all had health insurance?

yeah same. i only had some bc of medicaid but got kicked off at 19, lol. it’s rough out here.

Damn, they let me stay on till I got my first job at 21.

I've been on medicaid forever, this is how I'm finding out people stay on their parents insurance until 25 lol, good for them!! get it where you can this shit should be free anyway

  • uh oh. im next in line :(

I’m scared bc I have meds for severe allergies and i NEED those and access to emergency care.

I’m lucky that my parents have enough $ to pay for my insurance plan once I get kicked off. But it’s just really frustrating. I’ve been a server in a kitchen for the past 3 years. My current workplace does not provide health care.

I feel the push to get a “real job” with health insurance provided. I have 1.5 year left to go on my degree.

To live in this country is to die for the money.

i got a CS degree and regret it. i might go back to college this fall to be a teacher. ill be turning 25 when/if that happens.. that said, its a 2 year degree if you already have a bachelors. ill be 27 if i actually finish on time.

seriously considering just being a custodian until i figure the rest out

I'm in the same spot with the cs degree. Teaching would be aight if it were like the 90s. The job description for teachers has apparenlty expanded massively in the past few decades.

I would recommend going for a public sector job. Regardless of if it is federal, state, or local they all typically have decent benefits. Most of them have at least some positions that are genuinely entry level and the workload is almost always more manageable than food service(unless you go for a public sector job that actually is food service related)

    This is the way.

I mean you don’t need a degree to get a “real job” look into union positions. I worked in kitchens for 10 years and got a job in the union and get payed almost double my old wage starting, great medical benefits, retirement account, 15 holidays off plus 2 weeks vacation, all the works. It takes a long time to get in but it’s so worth it once you do

I feel you. I got cancer at 24 and was still covered under my parents now, but now that I’m about to go on my own insurance I’m sure I’ll have to pay more if my cancer comes back

Edit: who downvoted me for talking about having cancer 💀

This is awful. I’m so sorry. Wishing the best for health this new year

  • Medical insurance kicking you off at 26 should be illegal. God we need fuckin universal healthcare.

Think how rough it was before the Affordable care act. People got dropped right after high school if they didn't go to college

  • Gotta get glasses, dental appointments, vasectomy, and all my check ups dine now... its gonna be a while

My psych is giving me max refills on my bipolar meds rn so I can stock up… he’s a G

Glasses aren't too expensive out of pocket. When I was uninsured, I went to the optometrist at Walmart to update my lenses and the appointment was only $50. When I had insurance I had a $25 copay, so I only paid $25 more without insurance 🤷‍♀️ Their frames are also fairly inexpensive and they often have sales. I bought a cute pair of glasses for $80 and they're going in 3 years.

Dental is a whole other story lol. But general eye care isn't too expensive. In your mid-late 20s you typically don't see much change in your vision or overall eye health either so there's usually no need to see an ophthalmologist.

  • Don't remind me 😞

    I’m scared !

You have until the end of 2026, you've got another year. Doesn't matter when your birthday is, you can stay on your parents insurance until December 31st of the year you turn 26.

Make sure you're prepared come next year.

  • reading through these comments, i'm glad I was not born in the united states, I don't know how you guys can live/deal with that kind of thing. power to you guys for keeping up the fight though, and hopefully you OP are able to find some good healthcare for yourself to live an alright healthy life

makes someone appreciate something they have or the life they have and not take it for granted, since I was 15 I thankfully always had my own medical insurance from working part time/full time jobs, provincial government plans when I was unemployed and my dad's family plan at one of his old jobs at one point

  • I was kicked off my parents health insurance when I was 20 years old. I empathize with people my age as they have to start preparing for this but a small part is also jealous they're 25yrs old and haven't had to worry about this kind of stuff whereas its given me so much stress the past few years. The first year or two were the worst but it got better once I finished college and got health care through my job.

  • lol my parents haven't had insurance since the 90's (farmers self employed) i was lucky enough to have the NYS insurance until 18

  • January 2000 here. 26 is looming over me like the boogeyman.

  • As a Canadian I struggled to understand what y'all meant. After reading a few more comments, I understand y'all mean the American "healthcare" system.

lol exactly cus “health” has nothing to do with with this system

Same as a finn lol, after reading the comments i was like ooh right this is about the american “healthcare” system

  • Just got a position with the county and will have good health coverage just in time

  • I Live in Norway i got kicked off my Parents Travel innsurance in 2018 But i forsure are happy that i dont live in the us

  • I seriously might die when this happens to me. Fuck insurance companies.

    27 club🤍🔥💀

  • Kicked off at 18 gang, 24 now.

  • Been on my own since 18

  • it’s ironic how dealing w american healthcare makes me feel like it would be easier (and cheaper) to just kill myself lol

im not actually suicidal but those who get it know what i mean

  • I've been off mind since like 19. My mom moved out of state as soon as I moved out lmao

  • Wait. Your guys’ parents have health insurance?

  • Makes me slightly happy that my dad never had insurance and I have been on Medicaid this whole time

  • Jokes on you, I haven't been on my dad's (or any haha) healthcare plan in years because he doesn't have one. Because the state of texas laid him off to cut costs in 2018. :)

  • I lost my parents medical insurance when I was 21…

  • Shoot i havent been on their insurance for nearly a decade.

  • I’m seeing like, 5 different specialists and I’m terrified.

  • Uncle Sam handled all of those shenanigans for me

  • We’re all in this together!!

  • I've been on my own Medicaid since I was 18.

  • my parents moved out of the country, so had to get my own insurance at 23.

  • Will forever be grateful my parents put me on my own plan from the day I was born

  • Stop scaring me 😭 it’s late and I’m too tired lol I was already thinking about this earlier today tho and I’m a Capricorn 😩

  • The kids are not alright.

  • my parents never had health insurance to be kicked off of. (‘:

i got booted off medicaid at 19. been paying out of pocket, went into debt for a bit because of it. at a job now with okay health insurance.

don’t take for granted if you’re on their insurance, do everything you can while on it.

  • I just turned 26 last week, my parents asked me what insurance im going with and didnt understand when I explained that I'm not going to get anything for now because I can't afford it. My dad even tried convincing me iver the course of several hours that not having health insurance is illegal lmao. I'll probably apply for the fed insurance so I have something but its just not doable to get anything close to what my parents had. Ive gone from having the best blue cross/blue shield insurance plan to having nothing, thank god I'm not on any serious essential medications or I would be screwed. I have insomnia and I was able to get the psychiatrist to set me up with a 4 month supply of my sleep medication with additional refils so over the last couple months ive been "losing" or having my script get "stolen from my car/gym locker/ backpack" just so I can horde as many bottles as possible. Its basically a situation where I need to stretch these as long as possible basically only using them when a good night sleep/being well rested is absolutely nessesary...

    “But it’s illegal”

The millions of uninsured people in the country:

I'm sorry your dad tried to convince you with terrible advice. It's not illegal to not have health insurance. It is illegal to not have car insurance.

  • Dental is the biggest one for me since I’m otherwise healthy and I suppose a little lucky. Didn’t go to the dentist for two years between my last appointment at 25 and then again at 27. Finally got my dental insurance through my employer (who promised me it earlier, but I didn’t receive it until my second year there). I ended up with several cavities needed fillings. Glad it wasn’t worse and it definitely could have been if my home care wasn’t progressing by the time I was 27. Went through some depression after a close friend died over a year and a half ago.

  • Already turned 26, I am on Medicaid but with the current administration we’ll see how long that lasts 🤪🤪🤪

  • I’m already 26

post about people born in 2000

clearly this isn't talking about you lol

  • You are on your parents medical insurance until 26? That seems very arbitrary. (Speaking as someone from the uk)

oh it’s alot of things lol.

  • Discourse seems pretty straightforward. Healthcare is absurdly expensive, and its about to get even more absurdly expensive with the ADA benefits getting cut in congress.

If you're rich, you don't care. If you're poor, you're fucked. Vote better in 2026.

Idk why you're getting downvoted when it's the truth.

All we can really do is vote differently and choose better people starting from the local areas and up.

Conservatives have an ego. They don't like to acknowledge that they should be embarrassed by their vote.

I feel like a lot people in this sub are conservative.

  • Honestly it is a headache but good thing you can get insurance through your employer.

  • I just turned, and yeah it’s a little scary!

  • When my best friend turned 25, I gave her my condolences instead of congratulations lol, living as a student and having to pay your own medical insurance is not easy

  • I’m fortunate enough to work for a job where I don’t have to pay into insurance at all but while I’m fine with private healthcare companies I will say there does need to be something in place to provide health needs. It’s one of the few things that I believe everyone should pay into (like taxes obviously) for the benefit of others

  • At this point, joining the national guard for the health insurance alone is a great option

  • Wait what? I got off at age 20 because I got a job. The employer takes care of ensurance (at least the big ones) where I live

  • I got my wisdom teeth taken out like right before I turned 26. For anyone putting it off-get your medical/dental work done if you can

  • Married my high school sweetheart 3 days before my 26 birthday and my dad’s insurance ran out! I went on my hubbies insurance! It was actually the reason we waited so long to marry! I was born with deformed kidneys and my dad’s insurance covered all my surgeries and expenses and didn’t have to pay a dime!

  • Oh yeah huh…welp imma need to see what I can do

  • 2000 baby & I got off my parent’s at the end of 2023. Took me till almost the end of 2024 to schedule all my appts tho lol

  • I don’t really get why they force you to get off of it. If your parents are still okay with you being on their insurance then you should be able to stay on it tbh

  • I'm on Tricare lol

  • What a great time for my health to start failing :) just got diagnosed with IIH and I can't work

  • 😩😩😩😩

  • And my birthday is at the beginning of January 🫩

  • I think in Germany it ends on your 25 birthday :( also the worst part for me is not getting the child benefit money the state sends my mom monthly anymore. I already have a job over which I'm insured.

  • Luckily I got a job with really good health insurance when I turned 25

  • Am I supposed to be on their insurance? Im on my own from my job.

  • I was removed by my parents this year due to unseen circumstances, but, my job has really good health insurance. I’m more scared of losing my job than anything cause now if something happens I don’t have my parents insurance to help me.

  • literally enrolled in med insurance during this years enrollment bc my bday is earlier in the year 🥲

  • Hehe, my company provides insurance and my parents are on my insurance

  • I’ll be 26 on the 6th. I got my insurance cards in the mail and was very excited and then disappointed because I was excited about insurance cards.

  • I been off my parents medical insurance for years now😭

  • Yep that’s me and I’m still trying to find a job.

  • can anyone explain why i was kicked off when i was 23

  • We're cooked brothers and sisters

  • My dad has told my sister and I that he wants us to find our own insurance before he plans to retire (April 2028) at which point I will be four months away from turning 25 and my sister will be three months past turning 23. My sister lowkey gets screwed on this but I’m probably fine.

I have an engineering bachelor’s degree and will be getting a business master’s degree soon with maybe an MBA in my future. My co-op (which was for the fall semester and ends today) has the same health insurance that my dad’s company does. If I end up going back to my co-op full time then I will probably get on their health insurance immediately. Both my dad and I work in pharma so we get good insurance (relatively speaking).

  • I already am on my own insurance since my wife was uninsured before we were married and my work didn't really have an option to have insurance for a spouse that didn't also cover the employee.

  • Yeah, this isn’t fun. Appreciate being on your parent’s insurance while you still can.

  • I didn’t even know you can get insurance from your parents 🤣

  • I had to get my own insurance when I was 22. My parents refused to get the Covid shot and almost lost their jobs (and insurance) because of it. Thankfully I was able to get my own.

  • This makes me so frickin grateful that I'm a public school teacher and actually have decent insurance through my job.

And thank God my husband is a teacher too!

But seriously it shouldn't be a saving grace that your job has amazing insurance. It should be readily available all the time.

  • hahaha my parents never had health insurance

  • this is how important it is to get a jawb with benefits bois!

  • 😢 I’m in this picture and I don’t like it.

  • Everyone out there please take advantage of subsidies offered to you. The ACA is an amazing thing. I pay full price for my health insurance because I get reimbursed and it’s incredibly expensive.

  • I lucked out. My employer has good health insurance and its cheap.

  • I got kicked off early because I was on my dad's insurance and he died when I was 23. I'm going to be honest, I spent like $600/month on insurance and never hit my deductible so I now don't have insurance and just do like a membership at a doctor's office and use goodrx for ads. Emergency room bills only affect you if you actually pay for them sooooooo

  • Almost 26 and still a full time college student 😭 So I definitely won’t have a job by the time I get kicked off. I’ve been trying not to think about it but I’m running out of time to ignore it. I have a lot of medical issues that need regular upkeep, too.

  • Ngl health insurance coverage was one of the carrots that got me to go to grad school. Semi crappy pay with pretty solid health coverage guarantee and an advanced degree at the end? Sold!

  • What? You Americans have this kind of thing? Honestly impressive!

  • I got off it a year early

  • Please don't remind me

  • Laughs in PHD student

  • I get CHAMPVA because I’m married to a disabled veteran, but that doesn’t really do much. It’ll just keep us out of bankruptcy if I have to go to the hospital.

I turned 26 earlier this December, and I definitely should have been going to the doctor this year to get some stuff taken care of.

I have been needing to see an endocrinologist for my Hashimoto’s, and I’ve just been putting it off.

I’ve also been putting off going to the eye doctor and dentist.

  • Honestly the only reason I have health insurance is because my mom got me a separate one years ago.

    Rip the dental insurance though.

  • A note to upcoming 26ers: if your workplace offers insurance, you should be able to do special enrollment in the weeks leading up to your bday. Don’t wait till you actually turn over and then start looking into it or you’ll be uninsured for a while which is no bueno

  • I got kicked off at 18 😍

  • Welcome to the club yall, it fucking sucks

  • jokes on you, i got kicked out at 18 and have had to have my own insurance for ages (i have so much medical debt i fucking hate america)

  • i stopped being on their insurance at 21😍😍 i'm 23 now and have yet to get insurance

  • Yeah, I’m not looking forward to paying for my health insurance.

  • I already wasnt on it for a while now. Havent seen a doctor in a while.

  • It's so bizarre to me that with health insurance they'll only cover the insured and their dependents. In auto insurance they force you to cover anyone who lives in your house, even if they never drive your vehicle. None if it makes sense.

  • Been off my parents health insurance for a year and a half now, insurance is better through work. I get 3k deposited into my HSA by them and my deductible is 3k. Also no premiums which is great.

  • My mom never put me on her insurance because it would cost too much :(

  • gotta say, in 2021 i remember telling my therapist how worried i was for when i lost my parents insurance, and she told me not to worry about something so far in the future.

i blinked and it happened and it sucked exactly as much as you think.

  • The Army lets you pick your job! Recruitment stations are open😂

  • Forgot about that ngl

  • Imagine this, some people never were on their parents insurance because they didn't have any.

  • Hate to say it but being kicked off your parents' insurance is such a privileged concern. Many parents and children don't even have insurance, let alone be bothered with getting kicked off of it.

  • My parents kicked me off when I graduated and got a job with benefits, so 24 instead of 26

  • Do people really stay on their parents insurance for that long?

  • I’m Canadian so I don’t understand this meme

  • Joke's on you: they don't have health insurance.

  • I got told it was 30 by an insurance agent, you telling me I got bullshitted last year?

  • My sister in May.

  • Well, I'm Canadian, so I don't have to worry about that, I do really feel bad for y'all tho.

  • I got kicked off a year ago and haven't had insurance since August... when I left the job that provided it (it was pretty decent) but no job I've had since gave insurance

  • means nothing, I've had my own insurance since I was 14

  • I got a $210,000 surgery 7 months before my 26th birthday. I have a parent with cancer so deductible was met and it was all free!!!

  • My parents took me off their insurance when I turned 18. I went without it for some of my twenties

  • What about the poor kids that got cut off of government insurance at 21 because their parents' factory jobs don't have insurance

  • Lol I've had state health insurance my whole life so I can't relate tbh,

I'd consider you low key privileged if you had that tbh.

  • I'm already on Medicaid thank you New Jersey for giving autistic people Medicaid

  • I switched to my own at 24 so I wouldn’t have to do it later lol

  • UGH don't remind me😫🤧😤😤💅💅

  • my parents have medicaid so i had to get my own insurance when i turned 18

  • So I guess the question is what country has the best healthcare 💁🏽‍♀️😂

  • Well crap I have till August next year, thankfully!

  • We aren't kids

  • I've been off my parents since I was like 20... My dad retired so no insurance to be on.

  • Haha, I’m in danger

  • Well i'm currently battling cancer and I just turned 25. So not looking forward to it.

  • It’s sad that it’s a privilege and not always guaranteed still here in the U.S., but I have great insurance through work.

Please guys, read your policy(yes, your policy and coverages so you can get the most out of it

  • My mom won’t let me change my address. I haven’t lived at home in 4 years. I have health benefits at work, lmao

  • Literally in two months I’ll be kicked off and it makes me cry throw up thinking about it because I have a chronic injury and currently cannot work more than half of the jobs out here and the ones I can get have not accepted me 😭😭😭😭 I AM SO FUCKED

  • Hahaha, don’t remind me

  • I’m…on the fringe…aren’t I….

  • I got kicked off at 19
