This is how fun, community, concerts felt without smartphones... I wasn't born when Woodstock took place, but I grew up in the 80s and 90s without the permanent presence of iPhones, and you could just be yourself, have fun, party, dance like noone was watching, because nobody was (or could record it for all eternity)... Let's bring that back!
I agree but it’s an interesting argument using photos that prove someone was, in fact, watching.
We all watched the photo
Watching and considering what was worth photographing with a camera containing a roll of film with a limited number of frames. A quality camera required focusing and setting f-stop and exposure time. The film rolls then had to be processed and photos printed, a real expense.
Couple of people with cameras isn't the same as 7000 douchebags with their phones out.
If they had phones back then they would be. Don't act like human nature changes and that generation of people are the boomers. The people that ruined this country. That generation became 1000000X worse than the ones in the photo protested.

So, fellow old person, I will share that I have a different perspective. You need to remember that the sentiment you just shared has been said by every generation since the dawn of time about successor generations, and you know what?
It’s always been wrong.
This world isn’t ours anymore; it’s theirs. They’re going to make of it what they will in their own way. You see a social dynamic that starkly contrasts with your own experience from 20, 30, 40 years ago and you deride it because you wouldn’t enjoy it. But you also don’t see - can’t see, just like our parents couldn’t see with us, and theirs with them - is their own version of community building, engagement, experience, all the things that brought you to you but just in a very different way.
The kids are alright.
the ironic thing though is most people dont see all of the footage taken from modern day concerts compared to the entire world seeing the smaller amounts of photos taken during shows those days
things have changed but they're the same as they ever were.
If you think we young people today fear the consequences of our actions being put on the internet: you haven’t been paying attention!
People in their 20s, (and lots of other ages) will absolutely still strip down and go sliding in the mud. Sure, there's people taking video, and most people don't care. Pick any muddy festival and scroll through some videos of it. There's gonna be people playing in the mud.

3 day concert? Sign me up and let me grab my flute!
Just in case you're bored by Jimi Hendrix, the Who, Janis Joplin, or the Jefferson Airplane, here's an amateur with a flute and another with a conga drum.
They tried to bring it back in the 90s but greed turned it into a violent disaster filled with nu-metal douchebags and overpriced water bottles. I suspect in 2025 greed would ruin it again

Everything that idiot ever promoted had the same results. Unorganized, chaotic, disaster.
The first one (1994) was fine. It was the 1999 one that sucked

Congratulations
Yet here we are looking at a photo.
Pisses me off that these dirt-drenched, fun-loving, drug-taking freedom lovers absolutely FUCKED everyone over to the max. Hypocrites.
I don't remember the exact quote, or even the source, but I do remember reading something along the lines of "they knew it was all over when they saw BMW's in the parking lot of Rolling Stone."
"On the road today, I saw a Dead Head sticker on a Cadillac".
Little voice inside my head said "don't look back you can never look back"
so... burning man?
Quite a wild assumption that they’re all the same people lol.
There was a huge anti-hippie movement at the time too, much more believable that the people that were part of that group were the ones that fucked people over. Or are we just generalizing an entire generation here for the lols
Ageism will be the last prejudice to fall.
Boomers screwing over the next generations is not lols, it’s facts
I didn't sell out son, I bought in.
Really. How did they do that? They seem perfectly normal for the time.
Hippies were a small percentage of the population...
These kids grew up, got jobs, started families, and tried to provide for those families, end of story. The fact they got wealthy is a matter of timing not because they are malicious hypocrites.
Zoomers are the new boomers that effectively put Trump in the White House because of virtue signaling. It was more important to get views than to get out and vote - like an adult.
And zoomers are the new shroomers
In what ways?
Its still a thing a lots of shows. Depends on the band
Yeah I was at a Billy Strings show in Newark about a month back.. barely a phone in sight and everyone was DIALED the F in.
sounds aggressive
saw pink martini, Bertha, Kat Edmonson, Melvin & JGB, New Mastersounds, California Honeydrops, Brothers Comatose, JRAD, SCI, Teskey Bros, and Taj Mahal over the past few months and could count the number of phones on my hands. folks just living in the moment. so refreshing.
Such a culturally significant moment, people are reluctant to realise the impact the counter culture movement of the late 60’s had on the world. Prior to this people were expected to conform, wear a suit, get a job.
This movement fuelled the idea of individual expression, being who you want to be, rebelling from what your parents expected. It’s an attitude and culture that persists and has carried through the generations of youth.
Watch out for the brown acid!
Okay yeah, no smartphones but there was a lot of sexual assault going on too. Not as bad as 1998 Woodstock but still bad
Better shut it all down then
Or we could just do our best to stop sexual assault and hold assaulters accountable?
How?
Education as a start, it needs to be a cultural shift. There's been a lot of positive movement in the last 20 years in that direction from my perspective. It starts at holding other dudes accountable and if you see something sketchy you speak up. It takes a little guts and might not win you friends but you can at least feel good about yourself. Don't take it from me though. Just read some feminist theory. Start with Bell Hooks.
Feminist theory 😆
Woodstock resumes!
Hey, if you ever grow a spine and feel like you want to challenge your beliefs the reading will all be there. It takes guts to get out of your comfort zone and learn so hopefully you develop them one day. Good luck
Rather a positive effect on society/culture/world than a deleterious one. Unfortunately, feminist theory isn't what it says on the tin; often pie-in-the-sky ideals, man-hating, victimhood mentality, and ignoring statistics. Not a big fan of Marxism either.
Yeah man because being against sexual assault is lame feminist theory!
Yea, if you just throw out absolutely everything else bundled except for that one statement in a vacuum, sure, you have a point.
But I would imagine only a child could be so narrow minded to look at this so simplistically... but here we are.
Must have smelled crazy out there
They’re all pensioners now.
Future presidents of their community’s homeowners association
I love those kind of belts. The 2 metal loop and a piece of material. I never wear belts anymore because my chonk holds up my pants without assistance. But if I ever had to wear a belt again, it'd be one of those.
r/lewronggeneration
They look like a bunch of hippies
Not a single obese person in sight.
They were bogged down in the mud just out of shot.
In the movies, every guy has hair down to his ass, in real life photos it's always hair down to mid-ear.
You act like they wouldn't have if they had smartphones.
This generation voted in catastrophic housing prices and fascism; let em rot.
Imagine the smell
Calls out smartphones at concerts. Posts a picture from a concert. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
IDK- gives me ick.
I can imagine so. Having to be OUTSIDE 🤮. And with all those people around to dance, laugh and have fun with? Not today, Satan. Now let me pull out my phone....
People really don’t understand sarcasm and it’s kinda sad
Something about the way all the guys are looking at her. Especially after the debacle of Woodstock '99
I thought the same thing.
Second photo is fine, but first one looks like danger once the sun goes down, or the drugs kick in, or any excuse for lost inhibitions can be feasibly made.
Looks terrible tbh. No wifi, no video games, just shoot me now.
Lots of weed though.
And lots of music.
And a bunch of legendary artists.
Wasn't pong out around then? Maybe a little early for that, even.
no, that came out in 1972
There were arcades though, with lots of pinball machines
