Sorry for your double loss, that's really sad that they passed within such a short space of eachother. Dyou think Alia was broken hearted at the loss of her friend?
It certainly would have been from a broken heart. While my dog didn’t die, she was utterly depressed when our other dog passed. They were inseperable. She just slept on the couch all day for weeks upon weeks.
A couple years ago our 20 year old cat, Pete, had to be euthanized because of fast moving cancer. Three days later his 23 year old best friend, Louie, died in his sleep. It was rough but we figured 3 days apart was all they could take.
Oh no that is awful - was she not able to handle anesthesia? I am so sorry. My two dogs are 12 and 14 and I have the worst anxiety about them lately - I never had dogs growing up these are my first two and all of a sudden one of them has slowed down so much - I feel like he got old so fast. I wonder if I will know when it’s time. Ugh I am so sorry
We didn't have an autopsy done on her, but the vet said it most likely was something to do with the anesthesia, we had all the blood work done and she was fine.
Even the surgery was completed, everything was fine but she just didn't wake up
Alia slowed down a lot after Luna's passing, wish you the best for your two dogs
What was the surgery if you don’t mind me asking? Ive been hesitant to do a teeth cleaning because this happens so much.
I’m so sorry I also have a jack Russell and a shep. My shep died a couple years back from cancer and I adopted another shep because I missed him so much.
Please don’t hesitate to get a teeth cleaning. My 11 year old cat just had hers and it went beautifully. Dental x-rays, gum line assessment, and checking under the tongue and on the roof of the mouth (most common sites for oral melanoma) are just three of the important things that take place. A dental infection can kill your dog.
Unfortunately sometimes it just happens. They do all they can with the blood work, but that only goes so far. We lost our 2-year old in July when she went in for surgery, the procedure went great, she started waking up, but she just never fully woke up. It’s so confusing and devastating to lose a dog like that, not to mention traumatizing. I’m so so sorry you had to go through that, I wouldn’t wish it on anyone to lose a pet that way because you never get to say goodbye.
It happens to both animals and humans.
Death from pet anesthesia is rare, often caused by underlying health issues (heart/lung disease), extreme age, specific breeds (Pugs, Bulldogs), or complications like low blood pressure (hypotension), low oxygen (hypoxemia), or respiratory arrest, but vigilant monitoring, pre-anesthetic screening, and experienced staff drastically reduce these risks by managing complications like low blood flow or breathing issues.
You won't really know. You will deep down but convincing the part of you that loves them to let go is so difficult. I don't think any loss hits quite as hard as a beloved family member but the only thing you can do is cherish every second with them.
I never had dogs growing up - I got them when my son was little and now my son is off at college and it’s just me and the dogs - I don’t even go out anymore because I feel bad and always want to have fun with them. I am so anxious about my Huey cause he just doesn’t seem himself anymore and I definitely feel like his time here is limited. I never knew how attached to these boys I would get. I just love them so much. Like they are my best friends.
you will know when it’s time. for me though i didn’t know it was time because i was in so much denial that my baby was getting older. please accept them aging now and soak up all of the time you have with them. slow down. i wish i had accepted toby’s aging condition earlier so i could’ve properly acclimated. slowed down a bit and not get so caught up in the demands of life. i just thought “he’s sick but he will get better”….
I know exactly what you mean - I almost feel guilty when I go to work lately but I have to work. I am trying to spend as much time as I can with him - he has actually taught me a lot about slowing down in life because my Huey is never in a rush and I use to always rush around. He likes to walk slow around the town and stop and smell everything. I just don’t want to make him suffer - he still wants to do things he has just slowed down even more - I don’t want him to be in pain.
I def know what you mean about denial - I would get so mad at the vet when he would ask is he showing signs of aging or slowing down - I was like NO!!! Why would you ask me that! I would legit be like BS at him.
yeah, for me i didn’t even realize i was in denial until it was too late. i just acclimated to whatever adjustment to his routine i had to do because of his aging. didn’t think too deeply just to keep caring for him and he’ll be fine , he’ll live “forever”. complete denial that he was nearing his time.
so you’re already doing better than me since you seem to realize before its getting too late 😭 enjoy the moments you have. once your pups are getting sick and NOT recovering that’s when you know.
my pup got a UTI despite doing every single preventative measure. he also had weakened kidneys. took him to the vet within 24/hr of his symptoms. got several meds for him. a day or two later, he got pancreatitis. vet immediately and got panoquel and an appetite stimulant and pain meds. started doing better for a week, but i had to force the medication i felt so bad. then seizures…. that’s when the vet lost hope and so did i. my family let him sleep i couldn’t make the call but i was there for the moment. he was more than just sick. his body was failing. he was 17 and stayed strong for me. im proud of him.
Just lost two rats in quick succession. :( it’s so hard. I like to think the first lit the way, and visited Alia in her sleep, letting her know heaven is awesome and it was okay to go. Not easy for us though 💔
Exactly my thoughts especially that first photo, they are so beautiful. I lost my precious soul dog in March & am still devastated & affected to this day. I can not imagine losing two in such a short timespan. I’m so sorry…
I’m so sorry. I had two pass away this year within a couple of months of each other and I cannot describe the feeling. They were beautiful dogs and look like the best of friends. I can’t offer any advice or help as I have none for myself either but all we can do is take comfort in knowing they had the best life they could with you and knew only what it felt like to have a loving owner and the best of care. Sending love🖤
I’m so sorry. That must be really tough to lose both babies in such a short amount of time. May you loving memories of Luna and Alia bring you comfort. If you haven’t heard of them, Lap of Love is really great for grief support after pet loss.
I’m so sorry—losing Luna and Alia so close together is just brutal. They weren’t “just dogs,” they were your whole daily world, and 7 & 11 still feel like stolen years. I hope you can take some comfort in knowing they spent every single day of their lives feeling loved by you; that love didn’t stop when their hearts did. Luna’s probably zooming circles in the sky while Alia keeps watch from the porch up there, both waiting for the day you’ll all walk together again. Until then, be kind to yourself—grief comes in waves, but so will the warm memories. They’re not gone, they’re just off-leash for now.

It was a TPLO surgery, so I'd say it is considered necessary
Shepherds are amazing, I can understand why you'd get another one
I'm pretty sure there are other methods for teeth cleaning, my dogs didn't have perfect teeth but they never had any problems with that

Yes but so can the dental cleaning. It’s happened to many pets especially when they are older. I’m very happy it went so well for yours!

Have you taken them to the vet - anxiety canbe a sign of a number of issues like thyroid problem?
Im so sorry
They are so beautiful. I’m so sorry…you can see in their faces that they know they are loved!
