In case this story gets deleted/removed:

I am 37F. The Popeyes I go to has an entirely Mexican staff. It's always very busy in there, they always seem backed up and understaffed like most fast food places. One of the workers is a Mexican lady who doesn't speak English that well.

I had already got my food and was sitting in the corner, facing the front of the store. I watched an older man (About 50ish) come in. The Mexican lady came up to take his order and he asked her a question about one of the menu items. I don't even remember the question, it was something about an ingredient used in one of the sauces. She said she wasn't sure about the answer, in broken English.

He loudly started moaning about how no one here speaks English, and started calling out to the back of the employee area "anyone speak English here?" The lady went to get the manager, but he was busy taking drive thru orders. A few minutes later, while the man huffed and grumbled to himself the entire time, the manager came over and answered his question about the sauce, then rang him up. The entire time he was ringing the guy up he was complaining about how none of their staff speak English. The manager did speak English much better than his other employee.

This is when I loudly said "Wah wah!" imitating a baby crying and put my hands beside my eyes in the crying motion. The man turned around and said "...are you talking to me?" I said yeah I'm talking to you, then said "Wah wah! No one speaks English! No one speaks English!" in a mocking way. The man was flabbergasted and argued with me for quite a while but didn't approach me. I told him "she DOES speak English and when she didnt know the answer to your question she went and got an employee that did know. You just had to wait a few minutes but you're fine, you big baby."

I continued to make baby crying sounds at him until he left with his order. I don't feel bad at all about what I did but I'm curious to know what other people think. I should note he wasn't calling the workers names or yelling at them, just being mildly annoying the way he was constantly muttering and shaking his head like it was such an injustice.

  • I LOVE calling out customers who are being shitty to service workers as another customer. It brings me immense joy.

I once stood behind a lady at a coffee shop who kept trying to get a free donut (she didnt qualify for a free donut) and she was being so rude to the poor kid who was being so patient. "Lady, if you cant afford the donut, I can get it for you, but he already explained 4 times why its not free."

She quietly bought the donut and walked out

once stood behind a lady at a coffee shop

The people in front of me weren't being overly rude but they were kind of demanding. When it was my turn I was thanked for my patience (as they do). I just quickly and simply placed my order, tipped and thanked her. When my drink was done she gave me a large instead of a medium.

I'm not saying you should be nice to get stuff (ick), just that sometimes being nice is something they really appreciate on a bad day... And you never know if someone might be hiding that they are having a really bad day indeed.

I got a free box of envelopes from an office supply store yesterday. Why? Idk, but i did compliment her nails while she rang me up and when there was a problem with the item, I said "eh, if I cant buy it, its whatever. Im not gonna get upset over envelopes, I appreciate your help"

One day my husband and I were buying lumber at Big Orange Store and we got a discount because I curtsied at the check out lady. She had just said the price was by the foot. When we said we knew she was visibly relieved and said something about how she wished all customers knew that, so I curtsied. It actually brightened her day which made me really happy. The discount was just a bonus.

Its so sad that retail workers have to brace themselves because people can't fucking behave. They arent getting paid enough to get yelled at

    brace themselves

Yes, that's exactly what she was doing! Poor lady.

This. As long as you were decent, not even nice, just decent, I was relatively chill in kind. The customers who have no doubt left a one-star review about the "mean pink-haired assistant manager" were being assholes, and didn't seem to realize that treating people poorly significantly reduces the chance that you will be interacting with a smiling, bubbly staff member. My "infractions" included, but weren't limited to:

    • not checking the back for an item I knew we didn't have in stock (foolish move on my part, I could have taken an unofficial break).

    • asking someone to hand me something they had changed their mind on because they were going to leave it at the end of the conveyor belt like every other asshole who does that.

    • not magically making someone's card work, after they admitted that they knew the card didn't work very well but brought that card (and only that card) to pay with.

As a former dollar store employee, there wasn't much I could do to reward customers, but once someone left behind a quarter in change (unfortunately we cannot just "keep the change" if it exceeds $3), so I gave it to a dad/kid so the little guy could get a gumball from the gumball machine. It was no sweat off my back, and I'm sure they appreciated it.

A lot of times I just want them to feel seen, for themselves, not as a process someone has to deal with to get what they want. The people that don't return a greeting or even look at the cashier. They don't say thank you or have a good day. So I listen and give a real answer - without trauma dumping lmao! Usually it's "hanging in there." It's an expression that most people could say at some point. So many times that's put us immediately into a state of collaboration against the world of not hanging in there. I'm a little high right now, but fr it's a little bonding thing. Suddenly we're real human beings there.

But my main tool for drama free shopping (of all kinds) is patience. Leaving time for things to go wrong. People around you can tell when you're not in a hurry and usually it's good for everybody. (Sometimes there's someone in a hurry that doesn't want to be chill.)

Even when I’m in a hurry that’s no reason to be rude to people who aren’t paid nearly enough as it, let alone enough to deal with asshole customers all day. (I have been one of those people)

More of people like you, please.

The one time I had a customer step in, it was to tell me to acquiesce to the Boomer who refused to leave my line because I committed the grave crime of placing her change on the counter. I wasn't going to just hand it to her because she was being very rude to me and I don't believe in rewarding bad behavior. And honestly? If she never set foot in that location again, the people who still work there are way better off for it.

So yes, I would have preferred if the customer had stepped in to tell the Boomer to fuck off instead of having two people on my ass over a non-issue. And yes, I'm aware getting change off a counter is kinda hard, but it can't be any less time-consuming than standing there and lording over a poor customer service worker because you clearly have nothing better to do with your time.

Embarrassment is a powerful tool and one not wielded nearly enough.

Someone once ordered a dish at Panda Express, then changed her mind on one of the entrees after it was added to the plate. The person behind the counter took the plate back and walked over to the garbage can to bin it, since to food can't legally be returned to the heating tray. The customer then tried to argue tyat rather than letting the food go to waste she can take it, but when the cashier rang her up for the extra meal she argued she shouldn't have to pay. I don't know if she was scamming for a free meal or simply too stupid to understand why she has to pay for all the food she gets.

  • Customers who stand up for the employees are the real GOATs.

This reminds me of the famous “more cheese!” video. If you’ve never seen it you’re in for a treat.

I for one hadn't seen that before! Thank you! The way that guy was laughing was great.

Thank you for this because I had not seen it before. That's the kind of trolling we need.

I'm all for people getting what they pay for but there is a way to ask for things. It's not hard to be respectful of others... at least if you're not an AH.

For the love of all that is holy!!! Get this woman more cheese! And while you’re at it, can someone please think of this man!!! He had to wait 3 entire minutes to get information about a sauce!!!!

I’m so terminally online I can’t believe I hadn’t seen that before, thanks for sharing, that was a treat

  • I just cant figure out why OOP is asking this.

You’re never TA for defending an employee from a douchebag customer

Probably karma. A lot of posts there seem like that since the situations in them its pretty god damn clear to everyone that they are NTA.

  • Good for her! As a person of color I’ve really appreciated when people stood up for me against ignorant people. There’s an old saying that says something to the effect of all it takes for evil to triumph is for good people to stay silent because silence can be tantamount to complicity.

  • "You speak English because it's the only language you know. She's speaking English because it's the only language you know"

  • Not to mention, she not only speaks English, but she also speaks Spanish! That's one more language than that ahole probably speaks.

I just don't get people who mock others who speak in broken English or have a thick accent. All that means is that they're literally multilingual which is an accomplishment. (jk I do get why. it's because of racism. but you get the point.)

Also, honestly, reacting to people like this by treating them like the childish dumbasses they are is perfect. They need to be told that they're throwing a tantrum like a toddler.

  • Good for her. Employees often can't so much as defend themselves for fear of losing their jobs, so it's nice when other customers call out bad behavior. Bro got his answer and still wanted to complain.

  • Years ago I went out and bough one of those small 10 button noise makers, because it had the baby cry sound. I work in a very casual environment where nonaggressive cussing and yelling is normal so when someone complains out of line or too much we just hit the cry button.

  • Reading this made my day like I always think how can people feel so justified to behave like this, do they have no shame or basic respect?

  • Yes, the OOP is an asshole.

The situation called for an asshole, though. Assholes are built to deal with shit, and racists are some of the shittier shits out there.

    🤣 well done. Lol
