In case this story gets deleted/removed:

Hi guys! I’m (21f) a Bulgarian tour guide who accompanies groups to Sicily. On a recent trip, one woman who was travelling alone (mid-30s) was consistently oversleeping.

The first day after we arrived, we had a day trip to Etna and Taormina, for which we depart at at 8 am, as we do all other day tours. I make sure that all tourists are informed of the departure times on the bus the day before and they also have my number to call in case they forget so I can remind them. They also all have printed out pamphlets with the schedule made by the travel agency that I hand out that has the time for departure on it.

All of the group was on time, except one woman. She was late by 10 minutes, which, okay, maybe she got caught up in something and was late. I excused it, then mentioned to the whole bus in the mic that I do not tolerate lateness beyond 15 minutes at most in case of emergency like a forgotten possession, and that I must ALWAYS be called and informed in case someone is running late. Trip went by okay otherwise.

The next day this same tourist was late again, by TWENTY FIVE minutes. Almost an entire half hour. I called her twice to no answer and we were just about to leave without her when she came out running and got on the bus (she got lucky, as the receptionist of the hotel asked me about a missing piece of info on the rooming list and earned her some time). I reminded everyone AGAIN that I will not be waiting anymore for late tourists in the morning, and waking up on time is their responsibility.

When we came back that evening, she asked me if I could 'make sure to wake her up on time'. I reminded her a THIRD time that I’m not responsible for waking people up. Everyone gets a printed itinerary with departure times, and I announce everything the day before. She kept saying, "No, no, just knock on my door if I’m not out by 8:15" and I kept repeating "I really can’t do that for everyone, please set an alarm."

Well, on the day we were visiting Syracuse, she didn’t show up. I waited 15 minutes after the supposed departure time, called her twice to no response, then left with the bus and the rest of the group. She called me in a panic about an hour later asking where we were. I explained the situation calmly. She got angry and said that I had one job and that I cheated her out of the money she paid to go on that day trip.

She missed the whole day trip and was furious the next day. Later she told the rest of the group that I abandoned her and also called my agency, leaving a bad review about me.

AITA for not personally waking up a grown woman despite warning her multiple times I wouldn't?

EDIT: I talked to my manager today!! I was nervous at first because I was already tired of this whole shenanigan and didn't want to spend ages defending myself, so I went to him first and explained the situation before he approached me. He told me, word for word, "Hun, I deleted that bs from my e-mail as soon as I read it" LOL! An icon. They'll remove the bad review!

  • Or put another way, do you ruin everyone in the tour group's tour because one member can not responsibly show up on time? I have been on a bunch of tours and there are occasionally selfish or undisciplined people that will make everyone wait for them. As a tourist, I 100% support the tour guide for enforcing policy and staying on schedule. Everyone paid for their tour and when a person is late, everyone misses part of their tour because of that person. Just make sure that you document all of the attempts so that it is clear that you did everything per corporate policy. You will be fine.

And yeah, I have seen people late to the cruise port and waving at the cruise ship to turn around (it didn't) or people that wandered off the tour and did not come back (we later found out the person had an emergency and was taken away without calling anyone; all the waiting in the world would only have ruined the tour for everyone). Stuff happens but the rules are there to support an enjoyable experience for everyone.

I think when OOP posted this, the story made me specifically search up compilation videos of people missing their cruise. They are very satisfying.

I remember there was a story a few years ago. Where OP's parents missed their cruise by over 45 minutes because they were trying to haggle with a vendor. OP who was 18 repeatedly told them they were going to miss it but the parents were like "we got this".

Parents were mad at OP for not stopping the ship and had to pay hundreds maybe thousands to make it over to the next port. Ironically, their mission to save a few bucks ended up costing hundreds more.

CRUISE SHIPS WILL NOT WAIT FOR YOU GET ON THE FUCKING BOAT FOLKS!!! Crazy how people think that the ship will somehow stop or wait for like... 2 people.

    They will not.

Time in port costs money, and cruise lines do not like to spend more than they have to. They will absolutely leave you behind if you screw around. My dad almost got left on an island once because he was hunting down someone for change or something equally stupid. At least he had the grace to admit it was a dumb call.

If I remember correctly, the cruise ship will wait, if and only if your delay is because an excursion booked through the cruise line is running late.

Yep. We were so paranoid we would miss it that we said no to shopping at the duty free because we wanted to make sure we’d be back in plenty of time

  • The most irritating thing about this type of person's demand is the "if I'm not out by...then..." Request. That crosses firmly into "I intend to make my responsibility into your responsibility" territory. There are all sorts of solutions for being notified at a certain time. Alarms, wake up calls, wake up knocks, but this person no this person wants a fuckin extra if-then statement added to her reminder method. Because she fuckin sucks.

We should all be like the physical universe and just keep on rolling the same regardless of what these shitters do or don't do

I literally set like three different alarm clocks when I need to wake up for something. 5 different alarms (one clock has two alarms, it's amazing). If you know you might not wake up in time, it's on you as a grown ass adult to do it. Not everyone else. I get so frustrated with these people. And the ones that try to use neurodivergences or disabilities as an excuse. No. I'm AuDHD and have several disabilities. It can be a reason I'm so tired but it is not an excuse for making everyone else wait on me.

I'm AuDHD, too, I think (not officially diagnosed), and quite deaf without my hearing aids. I struggle with auditory alarms. For a long time now, I've used alarms that vibrate to good effect. For the last few years that has been a smartwatch, which I originally got to check for aFib, but then discovered how useful the alarms were. Perfect - my old standalone under-pillow alarm was starting to lose it. If it's vital, I'll set more than one alarm, and make sure that at least one is set on the watch itself (in case it loses connection to my phone). I'm very happy with how effective it is.

My current trip required me to be somewhere at 8am this morning and because of insomnia I often don’t do well in mornings. In fact, the first alarm didn’t get me out of bed. It woke me up and that was enough. The second went by and it took until the third to actually get moving because it was a bad night.

But I still had two more alarms in reserve that would have gone before the point of no return, and got where I needed to be on time by skipping some morning routines. You do what you have to when you travel with issues. But what you never have to do is try to throw your own responsibility onto an innocent bystander. At that point, hire an aide or stay home.

This but also… what almost gets me more worked up is that OOP said that 8am is the leaving time and then says 2 times to the group that they won’t wait more then 15 mins for late people and the woman asks OP to wake her up at the 15 mins late mark… so she heard “we won’t leave any later than 8:15” and thought “I’ll get them to wake me up at 8:15 and then I can take however long getting ready and they’ll just wait as long as it takes”… like fuck her so hard

  • "You had one job!!!"

Yes, their job is tour guide

Yes - but waking you up isn't it

  • Part of the reason I posted this is because I love traveling so a little bit of author appeal.

My most entitled tourist experience came from my job, I work at a hotel. There was a tour bus coming in at 11:30 pm after a very long ferry ride, the guide was all "this lady is stressed from travelling can you go get her a bun.

First of all it was 11:30 pm every restaurant would be closed, my small town doesn't have a Tim Hortons. Second of all everyone else on that tour had to go on that long ass ferry ride too, what makes you so special? Third in relation to the first the restaurant at the hotel would of closed hours ago and it's a regular sit down restaurant not a cafe or a bakery. Fourth it's not our job to deliver you food.

Good thing I don't work at the front desk. I have a bad poker face and I don't think I would be able to hide my "are you fucking kidding me" tone of voice.

  • I remember seeing this one when it was posted. It gave me a chuckle then and another one now.

  • You can tell she really endeared herself to the group. Not a single person on the tour bothered to knock on her door as a fellow explorer, she had to demand it of the guide.

    What a fucking moron.

  • I can finally use 'do you guys not have phones' meme in a positive context! In this case, replying to our time challenged traveler.

  • I've heard this story before, a couple times. I feel like a lot of hotels have a wake-up call service and if she needed someone to wake her up, she should have asked the front desk for that, not the service.

I'd've been very hard pressed to not be snarky and say something like "ma'am, do you think I'm a liar?" and when she says no, say "well I am telling you I am not going to wake you up tomorrow and that if you're not here on time, I will leave tomorrow. If you think I'm not a liar then you should be here on time. And if you think I am a liar, then you should ask yourself whether you're willing to wager the possibility that you miss the trip tomorrow against that. I hope I see you tomorrow, but I absolutely, positively, will not be personally waking you up."

  • Like so many posts in AITA, this is thematically terrible for that particular sub (the tourist is obviously the asshole) but great for this one.

  • The Lion, the Wardrobe, and the audacity of this bitch. An oldie, but a goodie.

The lion, the witch, the audacity of the bitch perhaps?

They said it wrong on purpose to get you to comment.

They meant The Lion, The Tiger, and The Bear of this bitch, obviously.

  • Someone watches Smosh Reads Reddit Stories

You got me 😛. I was listening while cleaning a couple days ago. Not only do I have I previously heard it before it aired I had it saved on my profile. This isn't the first time I posted on a sub after hearing a story from Smosh Reddit Stories or Oz Vault.

I wanted a more light hearted one as the ones in the last two entries have a few screws loose to put it kindly. The last one I think might be ragebait.

    Haha awesome

have a few screws loose to put it kindly

Roommate in the first story: YOU'RE CALLING ME A SLUT!

    ***whore not slut

  • Everything had to revolve around them. OOP had every right to leave her behind

  • Gee, I wonder why she was traveling alone.

  • I've been on tours before where we were waiting around for an hour and had barley any time at our next destination because some assholes have no time management.

  • I am a stickler for the schedule, so it would annoy me to wait 15 minutes on her. Definitely NTA!

  • There’s like ten easy solutions to this. Go to bed early, get a wake up call from reception, buy a cheap alarm for the trip, set an alarm on the phone. Instead her idea is just to inconvenience someone even more than she already is. Then when she’s told it won’t happen…she still relies on it and doesn’t make any other plans. And the last time she was so late it took an hour for them to even get a call. At some point you have to realise you’re responsible for your own time.
