Both sizes 2 and 4 are Petite but will need hemmed and waist taken in a bit. I didn’t include size 6 because it was just too big and unflattering.

  • Neither. They're both pulling at front which means they're too tight and not the right fit. And if the next size up is too big and unflattering in the legs, then it's not the right pair of pants for you at all.

Hm ok. That’s fair. I just hate that I can’t find any cute pants that fit and I’m stuck wearing jeans all the time. I’ve tried so many.

I have a small waist and big hips, so i really reccommend taking bottoms to get altered to fit you. It should fit the biggest part of your body great and if the waist is too big, it can be altered easily to fit your frame. In this case, the front of your pants is too tight and it's simply just the way the pattern was designed. It won't be an easy fix. If you like this style of pants, look into slacks which usually a nice loose fabric or stretch.

You took my comment out of my brain. I worked in luxury fashion for a long time and this was what my sales associates always told people- size to how it fits best and then alter it. This especially works on ladies with an hourglass figure because most places just don't cut things correctly for those figures.

What areas should fit best? I have an hourglass figure and smaller waist with wider hips (though currently pregnant). My best fitting pants have always been altered in the waist and inseam.

Size up until your widest part feels comfortable. It's easier to take parts in than it is to let parts out.

You fit to the largest area of your body and then alter everything else down.

This is the answer. I have a similar shape and if I'm not wearing palazzo-style pants (which I love lol), I must have them altered. My waist is small and my hips are quite large, and I usually have to size myself according to my hips and have the waist altered to me. I don't think I've ever picked up a nice pair of trousers off the rack that would fit me lol

it makes me so mad that the large companies that made pants specifically for curvy people only did it for like 3 years before deciding it wasn't profitable enough or whatever.... we should have to spend extra money on tailoring just cuz making clothes for different shapes doesnt increase profit margins

Actually fwiw, I’m quite curvy and have had great luck with the Abercrombie curve love line!

Man, when I was young (and didn't have the menopause middle) every single pair of my pants needed to be altered. Wide hips, big ass, tiny waist, hardly any boobs. Good thing sewing was a thing in my family.

Just said the same thing before reading this; I agree wholeheartedly! Finding a good tailor did wonders for my confidence and my wardrobe!

Girl, I feel the struggle. Thin waist and nice hips are a difficult combination! Did you try wide leg pants before? Marlene Dietrich pants where I am from. Love them!

I have some great wide leg summer linen pants but haven’t been able to find any that work for winter!

This is me. I'm about to move somewhere equatorial so I can live in my giant linen pants and breezy abayas. 😅

Yup! This is the hack (I have found anyway) for a short woman with wide hips and a smaller waist! Also i love high waisted as it helps elongate my overall figure.

You need someone who does alterations - I’m also a not off the rack size. It’s worth the money

A tip, especially if the price is right (or you shop at a medium/high end store like Nordstroms, which will do this in house), find a good and affordable seamster/tress or tailor, and buy clothes that might fit overall but need slight adjustments (and generally, are adjustments down, not up, since you can always remove fabric but can't really add). Take them to your new best friend. Take EVERYTHING to your new best friend. You'd be amazed how much people are just wearing poor fitting clothes. In reality, everything should be tailored to your body. Nobody fits off the rack perfectly. For some idea, common cuts can be customized for 10-50$ depending on how much work (like, with those pants, if letting out the hip seams a half inch can be done, that, along with hemming the legs, might run you $30-$50 and they would look amazing. If there isn't enough cloth to let out the seams, get a size higher.)

Basically, with a good seamer in your back pocket you will never look at your options on the rack the same. And, thrifting is a lot more promising. (Costumers and avid cosplay crafters can fill in this role too. But I find full time/professional seamsters and dry cleaners to be less flaky to work with. (Dry cleaners almost always have a seamer, either in house or outcall, because dry cleaning actually requires a lot of removing and reattaching things.)

And a good seamer will get to know you and they will have ideas. Some you can send them photos while you shop. Like send them the above pants and pictures of the inseam and they can tell you if they can make it fit you and if you should buy it or not (a few friends of mine have this kind of relationship with their tailor. These people love thrifting, finding awesome names 2nd/3rd hand , and giving them another life)

Finding good AND affordable can be hard, also a good fit on personality and seeing that they get you. Don't be discouraged! If rural, and striking out on the hunt, don't be shy about connecting with one in a nearby city where you would visit a few times a year to drop off and pick up a stack of items at once.

Thank you for the tips :)

I like Anne Taylor Loft petite section for pants im 39 but feel they have cute stuff even if youre a bit younger. These pants are cute so I understand wanting them to work- but I agree not the most flattering

These are Ann Taylor petite! I tried 3 different styles from them and this is the only one that remotely fit :(

They make curvy petites and that’s what fits me best. I have a 12 inch difference between my waist and hips as a reference.

You need curvy pants! Will keep the waist snug while providing the room your hips/thighs need!

I know they are expensive but Abercrombie curve pants will fit you better! I have a smaller waist with a large hips and it definitely fits better

This is one reason why I learned to sew! I can make any pair of pants that a little baggy in areas tailored to me. Tailoring might be an option if you find pants that will last that you like. It can be pricey though so I’d only get it done on pants that will last

You can also look for “curvy fit” sizes. I’m a 4 but have big hips so only curvy fit ones usually work. For work pants I do Ann Taylor when they have sales… you could also size up and get them tailored but that’s an extra cost too.

There are places that make pants designed for big waist/hip ratio. I know Universal Standard does it for jeans, not sure about other pants.

You could always do the next size up and get them professionally tailored if you really like them and it’s worth it for you

As a petite, small waist but lower belly person, I have a similar issue. You need to shop based on your largest measurement and tailor beyond that. It’s annoying, but it’s going to be your best bet.

Get the size up that is a little too big; go to a tailor/seamstress and get them altered. It’s not as expensive as you might think and it does wonders for your confidence! I have a big butt and thighs, smaller waist and calves. This has been a GAME-CHANGER! Big time! The pants can look super cute if they are altered a bit! Don’t let people say you can’t wear something or it’s “not for you.” Your body isn’t made to fit clothes; clothes are made to fit your body. So, make them fit by altering the pants. I used to think I could only wear denim, but after finding a tailor I wear anything I want! I learned to tailor my own clothing in the last few years and that’s been great!

You can always get them altered/tailored. If you go this route be aware that things can be pretty easily sized down but not up. So if your hips are your largest part get them fitting your hips, then have the waist and/or length adjusted down to fit your body.

    These aren't jeans?

Have you tried American eagle? I have a VERY similar body type to you and I always find pants there that fit really well!

If the waist has to be taken in anyway, why don’t you just get the bigger pair and have it fitted to you?

Have you tried Halara? You look short, no offense, I am too, and they have some great petite pants.

Maybe size up for the hips and get them altered for the legs? My mom alters clothes for me but maybe there's an inexpensive tailor nearby?

I have a similiar shape and build and have soooo much better luck finding pants at thrift/resale shops because you have hundreds of items to search through instead of being limited to one store's options.

I have a small waist and big hips also and I swear by Levi’s, I love them.

I am like you (5'4", similar shape) and the answer is high waisted wide leg, in a fabric that isn't too stiff. It needs to have some drape and movement to it. Get the size that fits your hips/butt and get it taken in where necessary - they can narrow the legs too if you want!

Some pants I have loved recently: one, two. Both have movement instead of forming awkward columns around my legs that make me look stumpy. I had the first pair shortened and taken in at the waist, and the second I didn't have to alter at all so long as I wear them with tall shoes because there is, for once, ACTUALLY ENOUGH ROOM IN THE HIPS for my actual waist size to work.

You may need to find durable high quality items you like that are slightly big and have them tailored for best fit

I second this. She looks like a size 6. If she's saying 2 and 4 is in the pictures but 6 is too big, these pants are just not made for her body shape/frame and also the pants are sooooo long. If she buys them she'll need to do a lot of tailoring.  You can see at the front of the pants with how it pulls for both sizes that its too tight but the leg are so loose.

I was worried I would have to write this first, so am happy to upvote you instead.

As for the 6, did you cuff up the legs when trying them on? Since they were not stretched tight around you, you would have needed to see how they hung with the weight of the fabric, and you do not get that weight when the weight is resting on the floor like the ones pictured.

    EXCELLENT point. Cuff them!

    Both sizes are too small.

Levi recently came out with a “curve” style in the 501s that cinch and eliminate the waist gap. I think OP should give them a try. I have an hourglass and they fit like a glove and are very flattering

  • Neither, they’re both too tight

  • They look exactly the same but honestly I wouldn’t recommend purchasing either. They’re both way too tight in the hips as illustrated by the way the fabric is pulling in that area. If they’re going to need them tailored regardless of which size you choose, get one that actually fits you well in that area and have the waist taken in appropriately. The color and style look very nice on you. I’m sure once correctly sized for your body they’ll be fabulous!

  • They look about the same. I would go with which one feels the best. If you sit down, do either of them feel uncomfortable? You will bloat when you are on your period, so I would probably recommend the four.

Good idea. I do prefer the feeling of tighter pants so I think 2 is slightly more comfortable but I didn’t try sitting down in them, and I can see them being uncomfortable when bloated

Does the material include any spandex or elastine? A lot of pants and jeans these days have a little stretch. That might affect your choice.

They’re 72% Cotton, 25% Rayon, 3% Spandex. The material is quite soft and thin with a little stretch to it

Rayon shrinks. A lot. I'd pass.

I agree with this. Walk around , sit down, stand up. See which feels better.

I personally think 2 looks ever so slightly tighter around the hips, groin and butt. It’s like not bad or unflattering? But a touch tighter.

Agreed on 4 due to bloat!

  • Neither. And it’s the pants. I think the material is too thin and the shape will require a lot of alteration to address the waist and lower back gap. I’d find a brand that has a “curve” line like Madewell. Meant for gals with hips and small waists.

Yesss many brands come in curvy sizes

  • I wish you had put the size 6 in for comparison. I think the problem is that these pants aren't really cut for curves. I imagine that the 6 would fit your hips better but gap too much in the waistband.

The size 6 has similar wrinkles across the front despite being way too big across the lower tummy - I think this style is just not right for my body

  • These are not suiting you at all I would try a different brand or cut. Try the “curve love” line of jeans from Abercrombie!

Second this!! An extra 2in on the hips is a godsend

  • They do not fit you well either size, it’s just a bad cut/style.

  • I’d say neither unfortunately. The pants look both too small and too big in areas. I think this particular pair of pants is probably not designed for your body shape.

  • The colour of the pants are nice but the fit is not there at all. I would take the 6 to the tailor if that’s an option.

  • Neither. You shouldn’t have that much pulling like the size 4, but you said the 6 were too big. They’re a cute color but they just don’t fit your body right.

  • Neither. These pants don't fit you, you need a different cut or a bigger size.

  • These pants do not fit you properly...Both pairs are pulling across the crotch.

I think you should keep shopping, there's definitely pants that will fit you better.

  • They’re just unflattering. Maybe look for stores that sell “curvy” cuts (smaller waist and larger hips)?

  • You have a similar waist to hip ratio to me! Finding pants is always such a great time 💀 The wrinkles across your hips on the front and back are signs that both sizes are too tight there. If you plan to take in the waist anyway, try a size or two higher to get a good fit in the hips. If you'd rather not have the waist tailored, definitely stick with 4 instead of 2!

  • Neither. Both are too small for you.

  • Both are too small. The telltale sign is the pulling in the front. They’re not flattering for your lovely curves. Go with a more relaxed fit that highlights your small waist, so the eye is drawn to your small waist and the curves of your hips. You’ll look sleek, taller, and classy!

  • They don't seem to properly fit you and are too tight

  • Neither the pulling in the crotch means they look too small to me

  • None of these fit well unfortunately. I can see the waist is too big for you but in both sizes they're way too tight in the hips and upper thigh.

  • Both of those are too tight - I’m sorry. Revisit the larger size or another pant.

  • Can you share the pictures of size 6?

  • What store are you shopping in? You have an hourglass & are petite. You want that structured high waist to celebrate it and frankly no stretchy material if you can. Like a nice chino / khaki in a dark color. That will celebrate you. And a solid boot cut or the leg you have is chefs kiss

Not sure why they don’t have a petite section that already has this for you.

  • I’m built like you except I had my outer thighs lipo-ed after a lot of years of dealing with them . I know the struggle of the gapped waist and trying to get flared bottoms to balance out the hips. Some brands that work for me are Banana Republic, INC and House of Harlow 1960. Quince also puts out a really cute Ponte Stretch Ultra leg flare pant where you can choose your inseam length. (Pic below) The best thing you can do is measure your inseam (crotch to floor) and get high waisted cuts at least 11-12” in rise. I get most of my waists tailored at the Spanish flea market. They only charge $10 per area and do an excellent job. The dry cleaners charge $25/$30 for the same job.

  • Neither. Maybe look for a different model pants because if you go up a size they're gonna be baggy around the waist. If you really want the just go up a size and alter the waist.

  • Do you buy Curve style pants? Abercrombie makes them and they’re life changing. Other brands have started doing that too. A few extra inches in the hips is key

  • They’re both too small. Sometimes you need to size up and have them tailored

  • It’s odd because the size 4s look both too small in hip but too big in parts of leg, maybe bring the 6s to a tailor to fit better to you if in the budget?

  • Neither! Tight and too long

  • These are both too small, try 6 and 8 and have them tailored to fit

  • Girl I am shaped the exact same way as you and let me just tell you I stand in solidarity with you when it comes to finding pants that fit

  • Neither. 6, and get it taken in at the waist. It will look a lot better at your hips

  • Try curvy fit pants from Loft

  • They arent doing you favors… Make peace and find a different pair. Also.. mind the length.

  • I agree with those saying both are too small. They pull too much in the front. I have found some good pants at Abercrombie and Fitch in their curve love sizing. They actually work for getting rid of the gapping at the waist.

  • You need a tailor. Go one more size up

  • None. They don’t fit your body

  • Honestly? Neither, theyre both pulling across the front, a sign that they're too tight. Try a size or two up.

  • Neither of them

  • A 6 and bring them to a tailor

  • Both are too tight and pulling quite a bit in the front.

  • Both are way too tight in the front.

  • Have you tried torrid?

  • 6 and get them tailored.

  • Neither one fit you. I am sorry. I take my pants to the dry cleaners because I am built like you. They take in the waistband for me.

  • None of these.

  • Agree with everyone saying neither. It’s obviously how much they’re pulling in the front, and that’s not the look you want to be sporting. Given how much the size 4 is pulling, I’d suggest trying a size 8, even, if you’re really set on getting a pair of these pants, and then getting them altered. Honestly, though, that seems like more effort than the pants are worth in my opinion. I really think you can find a better fit elsewhere.

  • Neither. They’re both pulling at the front cross the hips and on the thigh at the back which means they’re too small.

  • Unfortunately neither. Your shape is too amazing to fit this particular pant without tailoring, I suspect. You could possibly start with the 6 and have it taken in? If your alterations person is good, it’s probably workable.

  • Can we see you in size 6? Both the 2 and 4 are too small (horizontal wrinkles).

  • Have you tried "curvy" branded jeans? I don't mean plus size of course, but there's many brands that have "curvy" jeans for women with small waists and big hips/behind. I'm a size 4 but I have to get those because my hips are quite big compared to my frame and I find they fit well.

  • None. These don't work for you.

  • Pear shaped person here, every pair of pants I've ever bought is either too tight in the hips or too big in the waist. I accepted my fate and now I buy pants a size up so they fit over my hips and then take in the waist at the back to remove the gaping. It's expensive to have every pair of pants altered so I learnt how to do it myself and leave the jeans/thicker materials for the professionals. If you can find brands that have "curve" lines they might fit better off the rack

  • Boy these were bad!

  • Don’t keep these pants

  • none both are too tight.

  • I don’t think this is the cut for you. Neither of them fits properly. They’re too big in some places and too small in others.

  • I honestly can't tell a difference between the two sizes but both look way too tight/small, like they'd be very uncomfortable.

  • Your body is really straining the fabric in certain places, you should probably get a size that actually fits your butt and then tailoring the waist down isn’t hard. It’s probably hard getting pants that look good just because your waist is so much smaller than your rear

  • Keep looking at other styles. You've got a beautiful shape and it look amazing. Find a style that complements it. 🥰

  • Consider a different cut or style. They dont look bad but you might be uncomfortable if you need to bend over or squat

  • Neither. They are too long for your torso and your legs. They fit nice around your hips and thighs, but unless you plan to get them altered they look like a misfit

  • It's so hard finding pants when you have hips, I know. I used to be a 5 or 6. I just had to get over the number and increase my size to a 7 or 8 in order to get a good fit. I would size up if I were you. Plus some pants like to shrink in the wash. Cute pants, just need a touch bigger to really flatter your curves. Good luck finding some cute flattering pants! 🤗

  • Where are they from?

  • I don't like how either are pulling at the front.. they shouldnt be doing that.

  • Vintage/retro styled pants will work for you. My waist is a lot smaller than my hips as well and I always go for retro clothes. I buy mine online and they fit me.

  • Try Madewell Curvy Jeans or similar; they have small waist curvy hips!

  • I would get a size 6 in a wide leg slack, and have a tailor take in the waist. You have great curves girl!

  • The bigger pair and get them tailored

  • I don't think the style that's right for your body, regardless of the fit it's not doing anything for you.

  • I wish we saw the 6. I’d buy them to fit your hips and thighs (so probably the 6 would be right as this are pulling across the hips and thighs) and then take them to a tailor to have the waist taken in and to have them hemmed. You will be so happy with the result!

  • The waist can't really come in without cutting you off. Is trying another pair of the size 4 an option? They cut pants out in stacks so they all end up slightly different sizes

  • My youngest has 22 waistline but she got booties alright. And she’s only 5 feet tall so bottoms are difficult to find. Skirt rises at the back, jeans are ill fitting. I. Not a seamstress but my grandmother knows how to sew clothes (she can even sew a bridal gown) and thank god for those moments watching my grandma cause in order for my youngest to have pants/skirt I have to do alteration on it. There’s some stores that offers in-store tailoring for these type of alterations. Perhaps you could shop in those stores so you can have it properly fitted to suit your body type.

  • They look really good on your waist and thighs, but the way they’re pulling across makes your butt look a little flatter. You might need to size up and have the waist taken in.

  • They both look a little tight, but I completely understand the waist never fitting. I’m underweight but even I find it difficult for something to fit my waists AND hips, there’s no in between, I always have to wear belts to make the waist fit

  • Your best bet would likely be to get a size 8 or so and get them tailored. I think that would be the only way to get cute pants that fit properly. Tailoring is your friend. Or try the regular and see if they are shaped better because they will need tailoring regardless.

  • Right woman, wrong pants.

  • You should share these pics to a tailor and ask them which one you should buy, and they could make the necessary alterations.

  • I’d try a 6. You may need to get the tailored.

  • 2 looks great on your hips .

  • The 2 is better than the 4, but neither are a good fit for you. They’re a very ill-fitting and shaped pant. You should try a good bell bottom pant with more flair and tighter around the knee. Also, this new company called fit jeans may fit you really well. Check them out, they’re for smaller waists and bigger hips

  • I feel your pain, I have similar struggles/results with buying pants.

I tried looking at curve brands but seems like I’m too curvey for normal brands but not curvey enough for curve brands.

I just end up wearing pants that are too big for me and look a bit sloppy. :(

  • A very unflattering style for your shape; a straight-legged pant would look far better. Accentuate your small waist - not your hips.

  • I’ve had great luck over the years buying pants at Express which has good size options for me as a curvy person with more petite proportions.

  • Have you tried a wide leg flowy pant?

  • If jeans are pulling in the front, they are too small so to answer your question you should not keep either of them perhaps six maybe even at eight with how much even the four is pulling

  • I love my Duluth pants cause they're made for women with some curve. It's got extra room around the butt and hips so it doesn't feel so tight there.

  • I have a similar figure to you. I think for me, a more medium rise minimizes my hips a little bit, and I think a straight leg makes my legs look longer than a flare. The other thing I do is wear a brighter color on top, and a more recessive color on the bottom, so my top “seems” bigger to balance out my hips. I don’t know if any of this helps, but I think you deserve better than these pants! You’re gorgeous!

  • Neither fit around around the waist! They look too loose around your waist! Look for a different brand :)

  • Alteration is the key & buying one size larger gives the seamstress more fabric to expand the area that needs to be increased.

  • It’s hard to tell a difference in the pictures….but you look great!!

  • I have the same problem of a smaller waist than most pants fit. I buy higher quality pants and alter them or have them altered to fit right. I also go for more classic fits, that I can wear regardless of the trends. It helps my money go farther when I can wear the pants longer. When I find brands and fits that work best, I'll look for them on secondhand sites, because then paying to have them altered isn't as expensive then.

  • 4 if you must have these pants.

  • It looks like the waist is too big for you on both of them. There is a gap or gathered material at the back even in the small size. You just need to find a brand that has a different cut. This brand is not working for you.

  • Try Halara pants, my friend has this problem and loves that brand

  • Neither. They are too small and also too big at the waist and too long. If you want them that badly, size up and take them to a tailor.

Also, maybe look into petite sizing if you find that pants are always this long on you.

  • I have a similar build to you. Pants that fit in the butt and legs are always too big in the waisted. Recently I followed this video for taking in pants at the waist. It worked incredibly well and because this will be an ongoing issue it made sense to learn how to do this.

  • I think 2 looks good if hemmed... idk why everyone saying neither I think it looks good

  • They both are pulling at the seams in the middle. Looks too tight and uncomfortable

  • They look the exact same wtf 😭

  • Yall ain’t it expensive to get EVERY pair of pants altered 🌚 i can barely afford pants and the advice yall give on sizing is to PAY someone to fix them 😭😭

  • neither, they are both too tight on top and baggy on bottom

  • Omg I have the same shape as you and always struggle to find good pants 😭

  • You have a figure that’s to die for, but so many jeans aren’t cut for gals with hips and smaller waists. What everyone else said 👆about looking for a “curve” type fit or brands that understand how to honor your shape!

  • Um, no. Not a good color and unflattering, more tapered and a bit relaxed front would be dynamite on you.

  • You need to go up at least one more size, then go to a tailor to have the waist taken in.

If you clothes have any of those pull lines, the horizontal wrinkles, that means you need a larger size. Clothes should not be so tight that have those pull lines. Fabric should skim the body. When it is too tight, like these pants, it makes you look larger than if you go up a size or two to get the proper fit. The garment will also feel better when you wear it.

When you have such a big difference between hip/thigh and waist, you will need to a good tailor or buy elastic waist pants.

  • so surprised by these comments as i always liked how pants looked when they pull like that😭 as a non-curvy girl i’ve always been jealous

  • 4 so you can sit with no tension

  • The 2 looks better but I would get the 4 n have em tailored! :)

  • Get the next size up from either of these so there is room through the hip and thigh and then take them to the tailor! -from a professional tailor who also has a high waist to hip ratio.

  • The size 4 look better bc it’s not cutting into the panty line. I’d like to see the size 6 for funzies.

  • You seem stuck on sizing. You aren’t a size 2. And that’s ok. No one sees your size when wearing clothes. These pants are both too tight.

  • I think I'm the only one who can't see a difference 🤦 I actually kinda like how they look on you. A little long but might be cute with some heels...

  • oh girl, these are not great. I'm short too, learning to hem will make your clothes look more expensive. or hire a seamstress. I don't think wide leg suites you. try straight, skinny or even "cigarette length pants"

my advice, is look at other girls with similar body types and see what looks good and bad on them, not what's trendy. more like classic styles

I love Gloria Vanderbilt jeans, sold Amazon, Kohl’s, Macy’s and more. they fit women good and have good quality

  • 4, everyone’s saying neither but you clearly just have wider hips and the slight wrinkling looks fine imo. It will prob be hard to avoid with this style on your body type period unless you opt for a lower rise and stretchier material

  • I’m a fashion designer and 4 is literally for YOU just have it tailored at the waist

  • As an avid tight pants wearer both fit fine. I would keep the 2 because they'll probably stretch as you wear them throughout the day. They look comfy and the color is nice.
