Hey Everyone! I was admitted into osu as public health major in pre med track. But now i changed to health sciences since i thought having public health would mean taking extra classes that wouldn’t help for med school. Now im unsure about health sciences and mostly everyone is telling me to change into neuroscience. Is there any health science major currently or neuroscience in pre med track willing to help me give pros and cons of their major? Any pre med track students giving me suggestion about what major i should do? I dont have a specific choice but i do know that i want something that will be capability to have everything i need for med school but still able for me to have a high gpa. Thank you!

  • Go look up class profiles for med school admissions, and you will see that there are so many different majors admitted. Public Health Environmental for my money is a way better major than Health Sciences. Also, EVERY major requires "extra classes". Med School prerequisites aren't going to be your major in any major at Ohio State.

    This. There’s a reason that you can’t get a degree in pre-med.

Got it thank you! How were the course schedule like? Any benefits of doing public health? I was thinking to switch later once i start college or do u think i should switch right now before college? I have both interest in public health and health sciences so im a bit stuck

  • Med school wants to see you be passionate about whatever major you’re interested in. Pick something important to you and do well in it!

  • Genuinely do what you want. Im a pre-med neuroscience major and the classes don’t prepare you more than other major’s classes would. Ppl get into med school with art and humanities majors. Follow your passion; you will get better grades studying what you are interested in.

  • I’m in health sciences now and getting admitted to the program was so easy. You need a 2.5, and a C+ in all prerequisites which include chem, bio, anatomy + physio, sociology, psych, and microbiology (if I remember correctly)

Health sciences is a great major for pre med students because it is such a broad program. I’m not pre med personally, but I know a lot of pre med students in the program and they said they switched from bio pre med or something and health sciences has been so much easier.

    I love this program :)

It’s also important to give the con that this major requires much more credit hours than typical. It also has a required minor as well. Some people take a fifth year if they didn’t come in with lots of high school credits.

Omg yeah that too. I forgot about the because I came in with an associates so I don’t need the minor

Oh really?!! One of my friend told me she was scared about getting in since she’s first year so i was a bit worried. What did the application process look like? What are some of the benefits from the program? Omg that makes my worries go away!!

The application process was super easy! From what i remember, I applied last year so give me so grace haha, it was an application and a personal statement or summary. The accepted me like two weeks later lol. I love that the classes are so broad. This semester I took ethics in healthcare, pathophysio, management in healthcare, and health promotion and disease the prevention. Because the classes are so broad, it really gives you an idea of what you’d like to do! :)

  • Omg hi I’m a public health pre med student and I legit think public health is a hidden gem (I’m on the environmental path which overlaps with most of the pre med courses) aside from having a good gpa and a good mcat you’re proud of don’t care about what major med schools care abt. Your priority should be getting those good grades and getting into med school when the time comes not worrying about what major will help you in med school.

Shoot i switched out.. I feel like i’ll reconsider once i start college? Would that be better option or should i still explore and switch before going to college?

  • I did Biology pre health professions specialization, I only had to take 3 EEOB courses + GE requirements. Everything else was essential pre-med courses + some miscellaneous courses.

  • Health sciences is one of the easier pre med majors and I regret not doing it from admissions standpoint(Chem BS). Your applicant pool is about 60%~, whereas BS in Chem, Phys, Engineering, etc is 10%~ of the applicant pool at the cost of harder courses in terms of GPA. The rest come from every other background; arts to business.

Your degree can have a little leverage, but just hit the class reqs, MCAT, hours, research, etc and you’ll be fine.

I believe Health Sciences or Public Health is the best pre-med undergraduate degree at OSU.

Personally my narrative and background is high MCAT+Clinical hours+Chem BS
