Hanging a lamp. Didn’t die!

Glad you didn't die! Looks like a good diy solution to me.

Thanks, worked well. I probably overbuilt it with these thick beams.

Better to overbuild than fall and end up paralyzed or something.

Post in r/decks and ask if you can put a hottub on it… 🤣

Anyhow: good work. Seems like you made sure that it’s constrained in all dimensions. Would keep it for future renovations.

Better safe then in the icu

Just wait until you have to change the bulb

    parent
    24 points Cuntonesian

Thankfully they are now about 2m down from the ceiling so I can reach them from the stairs. Also Hue bulbs so I don’t expect to have to replace them.

If I ever move and want to bring the fixture, well then I have to make this again!

    parent root
    8 points phil_the_builder

Or you can just use these telescoping pruning shears 😁

    parent root
    4 points Cuntonesian

Haha yes. It has occurred to me actually. The plate in the ceiling is an inexpensive one, but the three pendants hanging down are £139 each so I don’t think I’ll leave them behind.

Looks like a LOT of work just setting up.

    parent
    9 points Cuntonesian

Yeah after I was done I couldn’t believe the extent of which I’d go just to hang a fucking lamp there. But at least with proper power tools it was relatively effortless.

    1 points andy3600

I’m guessing you weighed up the cost of getting a proper tower erected vs just rigging up this contraption and the pros outweighed the cons?

    parent root
    1 points Cuntonesian

Yeah I just bought two beams and four 10mm by 150mm wood screws. Very simple and cheap

how is building all that shit different from just putting the ladder on the stairs?

    parent
    50 points Cuntonesian

It enabled me to reach. Didn’t build this for fun let me tell you

    parent root
    16 points beatenmeat

I've got a light in the stairwell that's probably about more out of reach than yours and I have no confidence in being able to get to it. It's above the bottom landing of the stairs and then a good 10 feet above the next floor. When I moved in I was honestly trying to figure out how the hell it was installed in the first so maybe they did something similar to you.

It works well! And pretty cheap. Just a hassle buying, cutting and assembling, then removing.

My first idea was to just get a fixture with a single DCL connector and plug that in with a long pole. They snap in place so that would have been easy. But ultimately we had this nicer one already which had to be screwed and hardwired.

    Scaffolding.

    parent root
    5 points Pcat0

The ladder probably wouldn’t have been tall enough.

    parent root
    8 points Cuntonesian

That’s it. The fixture is about 120 cm out from the wall the ladder rests on, so it needed this bend to push me out from the wall, or it would have been out of reach behind me. But then the ladder was too short in height to reach if I put it on a step.

Of course a longer multi function ladder could have worked, but they are expensive and a pain in the ass to store when not in use. Because of the bends in the stairs and the sloped ceiling it would also need to be of pretty exact measurements. This way it was just like I didn’t have any stairs at all which allowed me to position the ladder perfectly. Also bolted it down to the beams so it couldn’t move.

Worked well. Now I just have to disassemble everything. 🫠

Based on time savings alone, I would have just bought a little giant ladder that would work for the height

Just press the buttons and then let go to lock the ladder in place

Been there, done that. But I used a table halfway the stairs, a chair on top of the table and a beer crate on top of the chair. My roommates went out and came back an hour later to see either the walls and ceiling painted or me down at the bottom of the stairs.

The landlord was happy with the result and asked if I would be willing to do the other apartments too, but I declined.

Those stairs look like an everyday nightmare. The handrails are even at different heights based on where you’re at on the steps.

    parent
    1 points Cuntonesian

No it’s a great set of stairs. Very well built. The lamp location however is another story.

Work done by a home owner is not covered by OSHA. OSHA is strictly for employers.

Everyone who designs places like that should be forced to also install the lamps / change bulbs whenever the people living there need it to be done.

Two ladders and a walkboard. Don’t do electrical on metal ladders.
