people who've still got CD/DVD drives in their PC represent

    we still have USBs

I do, built it in 2015, and if i ever upgrade the innards i am keeping the dvd drive, or uograde to blueray

Honestly my old PCs DvD drive saved my new build. Windows had a disk but also a code (I think) to install Windows without the disk. Unfortunately this required an internet connection which I couldn't establish until Windows was installed. I am not the most savvy tech person, there has to be a better way to address this. But if I couldn't harvest an old DVD drive, I would've been dead in the water.

    i put a blueray/dvd player/burner in mine. not a single regret.

  • In the early 2000s the German tech magazine c't printed a fictional short story where what you see through your own eyes was filtered depending on your subscription.

For example the main character goes to a museum with his partner and can't see the pictures because he had upped his filter too much to save money. It was very scary.

I’m scared that this is the future we’re heading towards.

  • Ya fuck that shit I'm going back to buying DVDs.

It sounds silly but it feels like an exhilarating and rebellious freedom to start buying physical media again. I recently bought some secondhand Blu rays of films that haven't been on streaming services in my country for years and I just sat there thinking 'Shit, no one can take these away. These are mine forever, I haven't gotta worry about them not being available ever again'.

It’s important to keep in mind that discs are physical objects that can be damaged and are subject to entropy. This is not to say that physical media is bad, I prefer it, but a company not being able to take it away doesn’t mean you’ll get to keep it forever (so back up your discs)

Still would rather deal with a potential scratched disc vs having to search multiple streaming platforms cause a movie I like gets delisted and moved somewhere else. Or worst purchase it only to have the service be shut down so everything you purchased is gone.

Scratching isn’t much of a concern. It can be avoided.

The layers separating over time cannot be avoided. Hopefully it won’t happen within our lifetimes, but… it often has happened within people’s lifetimes. And the problem will probably get worse as manufacturing standards continue to decline. The truth is delicate objects, especially ones that are cheaply made, won’t last forever, even in ideal conditions.

Ideally, to ensure you have access to something forever, you’d purchase it both physically and digitally. But that would be absurdly expensive. That’s why I encourage people to make copies of the discs they own. Pretty much solves all of these shortcomings & is why physical media will always be superior

Not silly at all. I still remember loaning friends DVDs and videogames. Honestly I kind of miss it and it would be nice to do that again. I still remember having a whole disc case of dvd and games.

I’m just so glad I never got rid of my physical media.

    Until they get scratched

I just found the 2005 crazy frog cd

We dropped Disney and Hulu when they cancelled Kimmel and haven't really missed it. I've been buying a lot more DVDs and it's kind of fun telling my kid "hey check out this movie" and having them have a similar experience to what I did growing up.

Edit: and streaming only kids y'all have no idea how good DVD extras were. Outtakes from filming, deleted scenes, commentary tracks with the cast and directors, concept art, otherwise unreleased shorts from the studio. This was the kind of thing it was normal to put on a DVD. Not even special edition ones. And they didn't need to install patches to play like Blu Ray does sometimes.

  • yeah that must be a bad future lol

  • Please do not give Hollywood ideas, they lack them already

  • Honestly i am personally switching my entire entertainment intake from online subscriptions over to physical media and digital ported media. My goal is to make a personal plex using jellyfin. Look it up if you don't know. But basically its Netflix and Spotify but it's yours. Forever. And you don't have to pay a monthly.

Also legally you ought to keep the physical disc, but there technically isn't anything stopping you from selling the disc and keeping the digital media, technically illegal. But enforcement is impossible. Friendly fyi.

"set up a plex with jellyfin" what the fuck? Plex and Jellyfin are competing servers.

I've never heard anyone refer to a server as 'a plex' that's wild, maybe that'll become a thing like velcro or Kleenex.

"Plex" has become synonymous with the idea of a personal media server. If i said "imma set up a jellyfin, you might know what i mean but most people don't know jellyfin and have heard of plex. Not the brand but the idea of what it does. This happens all the time with products.

Its like saying "crescent wrench" crescent is a brand. Adjustable spanner is technically correct. Its called genericfaction. Here is a list of nouns and verbs that people use that that are actually brands or tm but the name has become the word to describe the generic due to dominance:

Dumpster, google, allen wrench, sharpie, kleenex, band-aid, powerpoint, photoshop, Popsicle, wifi, bluetooth, jet ski, slack, facetime, velcro, jacuzzi, chapstick, taser, granola, escalator, trampoline, lavalamp, dryice, thermos, onesie (clothes lol) , annnnnnnd bubble wrap.

You feel me my dude? I could say imma set up a personal media server "pms" but that might be odd as heck. I first heard my buddy who is in server setup in the midwest say "plex" and he was using jellyfin

"I'm going to set up a server with jellyfin" - yes

I'm going to set up a plex with jellyfin - no

I'm familiar with the concept that's why I mentioned velcro, you didn't need to explain it https://youtu.be/rRi8LptvFZY?si=RzCzB2KRhxuvcpWI

I've been using Plex for decades and you're the first person ive ever seen do that, you sure it isn't just you?

  • Sponsored by TurboTax.

  • I still have about 1k discs, though I think of them as back up after archiving them digitally and sharing with friends and family via Plex.

  • Does the e-girl change mid viewing if she was cancelled? Cause that’d be kinda funny

  • I’m actually surprised a movie like Clue with multiple endings hasn’t happened yet on Netflix or something, like they randomize which one your account loads, but other accounts might get different ones.

  • Also Netflix spies through your webcam & notices that there are five people in your room when you paid for four & they send their goons after you.

  • Andy is in prison for using a VPN

  • I love freedom toons, he makes pretty awesome videos!

Erm, that's a political channel, no politics

I know, but this post is posted by him

  • Something I’ve noticed about these “dystopian future” posts over the years is that the future date keeps getting closer and closer. It’s a little unnerving

  • Having zero jail time is definitely a bigger flex than any car or yacht

  • What say you, digital britches?

  • Brooks was here (for the refunded stake if your hound finishes last)

  • And they're all gay

  • Hold up the e-girl idea is fire

  • I was really against this but the second half really won me over

  • how is owning DVD a felony? XD

  • This has been a problem for a long time and it's only going to get worse. I was high and watching "How I met your mother" on cable tv about ten years ago. That's when I first noticed it. I had to record the show so I could show other people.

What fucked me up was they digitally edited the show to change the billboards/posters in the background of a scene. It was for a movie releasing soon however the show had been out of production for years when I watched it.
