How on earth are they the banking capital of the world but can't find someone competent enough to read a boilerplate contract?

The defense minister Viola Amherd left us in a real morass.

We have this reconnaissance drone, the Elbit Hermes 900, from Israel that was scheduled to be in service in 2015... but still isn't. The project leader begged for his own job termination because he felt incompetent, but he was refused. The drone should get a heavier Diesel engine, which forced a re-design of the fuselage. It should get a de-icing system that the Israeli-operated models don't need. The drone should be able to fly autonomously in VFR airspace, and thus be able to see and avoid paragliders. In all the "operational" flights, the drone had to be accompanied by a helicopter for that reason.

After massive delays and cost overruns, we're now purchasing the off the shelf model.

    I could go on...

    parent
    13 points PM_ME_UR_CUDDLEZ

    shit I didn't know it's that bad

    parent root
    2 points DeadAhead7

What was the need for the drone in the first place? It's hardly like Switzerland has vasts borders or coastlines to watch over?

    parent root
    6 points SpiritedInflation835

The border with Italy, mainly. We have lots of immigration via Italy (a safe 3rd country), but the Italians don't really process asylum claims nor do they take back refused immigrants. They basically whisk the refugees to the borders of France, Switzerland or Austria.

The Ukraine war has shown that such drones don't stand a chance against a 3rd rate air defense.

    parent root
  • 83 points SwissTurkNerd

its ridiculous. There is no weapon deliveries, even active effort of blocking ammo and weaponry to ukraine because of neutrality, but then the moron government bought the most supplier dependent weapons system.

    parent
    88 points Corvid187

Nah the dumb part is the government failing to understand the same contract that literally every single other 35 customers signed up to.

Literally when the deal was announced people's reaction was "how the fuck has Switzerland got a special deal out of the Yanks", because they were saying theirs was the only deal to be fixed price at time of purchase, rather than US DoD Indexed.

Turns out, they didn't get a special deal, they were just dumb about the regular deal.

A country of bankers and lawyers, how did they not see this coming?

    18 points ComplexEntertainer13

You mean the bankers and lawyers that blew up one of the largest banks in the world not to long ago?

    parent root
    10 points BoringEntropist

They weren't dumb. They were simply lying on purpose. But they did for a reason: The Swiss voting public is very fickle when comes to approving fighter acquisitions. With that "Guetzli" the government wanted to avoid a repeat of the Gripen debacle.

    parent root
    1 points -AdonaitheBestower-

This is all true and would be good points except the 35 purchase was a bad idea because none of the contracts the USA signs are worth the paper they're written on.

    parent root
    42 points irregular_caffeine

It's laughable the F-35 was the "cheapest" offer and people actually believed that outrageous lie... The Swiss politicians & LM really took us for a ride on that one.

    parent
    6 points Corbakobasket

To be honest, I, too, would cheat on a procurement if Lockheed Martin got me on a ride in an F-35.

    parent root
  • 7 points Penki-

damn RAM prices affect F35s too?

    parent
  • 25 points SpiritedInflation835

What's even worse is that several leftist and pacifist organizations collected 100'000 signatures from Swiss citizens to force a national vote on the F-35 purchase. It would have constitutionally banned the government from purchasing the fighter jet.

After the parliament voted to purchase it in 2022 and the government signed the contract four day later, they withdrew the national vote. "If we're voting, the vote would not mean anything."

The very predictable cost overruns came. The "fixed price" did not mean anything. The dipshits gave away their once-in-a-lifetime chance to send a powerful message. In the country that is so proud of democracy.

"Okay, we're going to buy the Gripen then."

    parent root
    3 points DeadAhead7

I mean, it would probably have been cheaper.

Or the Rafale so you get commonality with the next-door neighbour that's been policing your skies along with the other neighbours after your air force goes home for the day.

But nah, let's just pretend the F-35 is cheaper by cutting out half the flight hours per year thanks to simulators in our report.

    parent root
    -8 points SpiritedInflation835

Exactly. We would have been happier with that plane.

    parent root
  • 6 points Haxorzist

We should buy 0, not because the plane is bad but because the supplier is a vital concern and the supplier is untrustworthy.
