Where I live in rural Ontario, there are tons of these. People sell fruit and vegetables, eggs, honey, firewood, cut flowers, plants, live bait for fishing. They basically never get ripped off, and on the exceedingly rare occasion when someone does steal, it's a huge community scandal. Just because some people are cynical assholes doesn't mean most people are.

We have a lot in rural Northern California. Unfortunately, theft happens here too.
Stores aren't so common around here, but stands are. There are at least 2 that I know of that are a 5 - 10 minute drive outside of city limits.
