for example i posted on a community that represents a certain region in the u.s and i made a post talking about the climate and weather in that region trying to understand the reputation or stereotypes of what the weather is really like.

the mods just removed and locked it instantly because according to them talking about climate and weather is a sensitive topic.

the impression i get from reddit is that there is way too much circlejerking or people who take this website too seriously.

  • 2025 where people are triggered by the weather

    [deleted]

I think making fun of homeless people in the blistering cold or extreme heat is insensitive, though having conversations about the weather in general is completely fine.

If people, especially mods, are getting triggered by normal conversation (how OP describes this) about the climate then I’d see that as the bigger issue.

seems the bigger issue is people wanting to make everything political.

my post was literally just talking about San Francisco and its reputation for being a cold weather city during the summer and whether this perception holds true for the entire city.

this is mostly related to geography then a result of global warming or talking bad about the homeless.

    Yeah that’s ridiculous lol.

Well, having lived in the Bay Area and worked in San Francisco- I got you.

San Francisco itself is a bit colder/windier than the rest of the bay. It’ll be foggy most of the time in the morning until around 11am.

Summers are “cold” but that’s relative to where you’re from originally. It never snows there, but it can be 40 degrees with wind. It’s definitely the type of city you want to have layers in as it can fluctuate from 50-70 degrees most of the year.

Winters are colder since you’ll have rain/wind. Some will say the city is depressing in the winter due to the fog/wind/rain but if you’ve lived anywhere it gets really cold it’ll be fine.

Summers are mostly nice apart from the random heatwave. Usually mid 70s during the day.

Now, if you go anywhere else in the bay, the weather changes drastically. I lived in the “far” east bay (Walnut Creek, San Ramon, Dublin) for a while and there were days that it was 30 degrees hotter than the city. 30 minute drive for a 30 degree weather difference.

When I was in Oakland/Berkeley, I felt it had the best blend of the climates. Southern peninsula also has similar weather (San Mateo down to Palo Alto).

That being said, the weather is super tolerable though changes where you are geographically in the bay.

I loved the Mediterranean climate of the Bay Area.

  • Climate debate is currently a sensitive thing in the US, especially with the current administration denying climate change and calling green energy a "scam".

It's very easy for the topic to devolve into political debate, which rarely goes well.

so the person who created the post gets punished for it rather than the people who are trying to get obsessively political in the comments?

honestly if i wanted to circlejerk about climate change, i would go to a subreddit where people specifically want to talk about environmental issues.

They're trying to prevent anyone from getting obsessively political in the first place. The post is a high risk for inciting political discourse, so it is removed before the discourse can even start.

Easier to remove the potential source than to police the outcome.

to be clear, the post I wanted to create was about the city of San Francisco and how it has a reputation of being a cold city during the summer.

i am not sure how that would trigger a political discourse about climate change when the coldness and fog is literally related to its geography.

Talking about the weather is literally the most banal, any-stranger-in-an-elevator, conversation topic you can have. If you're going to make jumps like that then you can make any topic off limits.

"What's the food like in Houston?" -- That could devolve into sensitive political topics like GMO, farmer's subsidies, obesity, eating disorders, healthcare, cultural appropriation, food deserts, etc. etc.

"I'm looking to move to Houston, what area should I be looking at for the best schools" -- well, you can imagine the worst case scenario for that conversation.

Literally every conversation has the possibility to turn political, that's just the way conversations and politics work. Can you think of a topic that is 100% apolitical? I can't

  • It's more about the subreddits you're in, I've never been censored in such a way. Reddit doesn't really manage most subs so if you don't like a community just find another

  • Sometimes its just mods being on a power trip, sometimes its because they've seen what happens and don't want to deal with it again.

  • reddit wouldn't be reddit without power tripping mods
