• Where did they go? I have one down the road.

probably more modernized areas that are prone to change don't have em much anymore is my guess

I assume some small podunk town more than anything. The diners in my hometown area went under because there wasn't enough business and the margins of restaurants have always been thin.

These awesome old diners are going extinct. The good ones usually the Mexican guys working the grill took it over.

  • I'm a big diner fan. I want to walk in and see some pies in a case, 2 kinds of soup (often the same), breakfast all day option, endless coffee, a table of teenagers (usually goths, Juggalos, punks, maybe a mix) being kind of irritating, I want a waitress who maybe smokes crack but also maybe is the most wholesome person you've ever known. I grew up with this shit and it's just comfortable and fun and the food is meh but fuck it so are most other places. It's warm, everyone in there is equal, there's no fronting, there's no egos.

Diners to me (elder millennial) are like what bars must have been like to Boomers on Cheers and shit. I will "old man" out always on this topic.

Oh you want the sterile, white/grey/beige w/metal wall hipster-yuppie "fusion" place? Well go there and tell them my trashy ass said get bent. I want a place with yellowed walls, comfy booths with maybe a strip of duct tape somewhere on the seat, some way-too-sweet pies and a Monte Cristo with an endless coffee please and thank you. Old man rant OVER.

While diners are heavily a 50’s and 80’s saxophone; hair Metal thing… I can’t even imagine what a country person thinks for diner. I do not take into account the country side of diners.

I was born and raised in Chicago. What I explained was what it was like there from the 80s/90s/00s.

I’m in rural Montana. We have cafes that sound like what you’re describing. Plop yourself down at the counter at breakfast time and you’ll likely get caught up in a discussion about ranch irrigation, elk hunting, and how the high school football team is doing. Turn your cup over if you want coffee.

  • Do you know how many diners I drive by on a daily basis? I'm not sure why you think they've disappeared or died off, other than assuming whatever location you live in is exactly the same as the rest of the USA/the world for no logical reason.

None of you seem to get that they really don’t really exist anymore and you folk just happen to live where the few that still do are at. They aren’t still everywhere. This isn’t the 1950’s and 1980’s where they are gone about more so due to saxophone in every song and retro aesthetics.

They exist in plenty of places. I grew up in New England, there's diners all over the place. Yes, some in small towns have closed but I can drive past 5-10 diners on the same stretch of road near me within about ten minutes.

There might not be many diners by you, but that doesn't mean they "don't exist", particularly since there's clearly a lot of us telling you how completely wrong you are.

  • I'm in south central Pennsylvania and there seems to be a lot of diners in this area..

  • Diners still exist though? I can walk to like 3 from my house.

  • 1000% totally agree & we should bring back drive in movies too.

  • I second this! I love a good diner, especially if they serve a good piece of coconut merengue pie.

My original post here in comments I explain further. Hope it helps.

  • There’s a 24 hour diner in my town and it’s awesome! I love supporting local businesses. Enough with the big chains, already.

  • One of the best things about New Jersey is all the 24-hour diners!

Do you have the Johnny Rockets restaurant thing ? I feel like a place like you guys would.

Do they have crappy chain restaurants in New Jersey? Yes.

  • If it didn’t cost $50 for breakfast, then yes.

  • The few local diners we have close after lunch service. And the only sit-down spots to get food after 10 PM are Waffle House and IHOP 😢

Is IHOP even on that side of things or is it like Bob Evans? Been so long since I been to one. .

The one near me is still sit-down. One of only 2 late night options that’s not drive-thru only in the whole city

  • I agree, generally less expensive and a solid meal.

  • Denny’s tried that it didn’t work

Dennys was not the comeback of diners out of what was the feeling of “the end of diners”.

  • Is it wise to encourage New Jersey?

  • I love it that you think diners are healthy. The diner by my place basically serves you a hog trough full of fat and corn syrup. It's great with hot sauce. Seriously, Sonic probably serves healthier food.

Of all that came out of the 1950’s to how today’s world is; diners are the least of your worries.

  • Why aren't diners considered to be 'unhealthy restaurants'?

  • I live 8n walking distance from 2 old diners. One is still a diner and the other is a towing lot. The open one has been there atleast 30 to 40 years atleast, probably longer.

  • Diners are great only if I can walk past more instead of McDonald’s or smth

  • There are diners in my city...never went anywhere. I go to Vic's at least once per month.

  • I don’t get this??? Are there a lack of diners somewhere?? I’ve seen them everywhere my whole life.

  • Diners haven’t gone anywhere…there are more diner brands today than 20 years ago.

  • We have them everywhere in NJ. They’re like the only good part of this awful state

Seeing as you have that one show; to the shore I don’t blame you.

  • Omg in Nj we have diners, especially after a long drunk night sloppily walking into the diner lol such a vibe 😂

  • Until everybody starts going out all the time again and the volume can afford restaurant owners to lower prices, this won’t happen. Back in the day, diners were packed shoulder to shoulder every morning with people getting ready to go to work, now they’re a novelty for teenagers to go to after getting high.

  • We still absolutely have Diners. My boyfriend picked me up a club sandwich so the extra pickles and fries to go for dinner from one 2 nights ago lol

  • Honestly I'd say closest in my area is waffle house 😂 but yeah hard agreed! Would be really nice to experience, that and drive-in theaters <3

The others don’t seem to get that they really don’t really exist anymore and they just happen to live where the few that still do are at. They aren’t still everywhere. This isn’t the 1950’s and 1980’s where they are gone about more so due to saxophone in every song and retro aesthetics.

yeah, people sometimes do get a bit tunnel visioned :)

  • I went to a diner the other day, just the side of pancakes was $8 🤣, coffee was $4

  • It's probably not just the diner you are wanting. It's probably the simpler life associated with it.

Ahahaha. No. I’m too gay to accept those decades entirely.

  • I love diners. I grew up on diner food as a teen - cheeseburger deluxe and cheese omelets please. But all the diners I am familiar with are so pricey, it's ridiculous. Over $20 for a salad? I can get a bagged salad at the suprmaket with everything for $5.00 and it's really good. Diner comeback yes but not at the ridiculously high prices...and I understand that the prices can never be what they were but they can be reasonable

  • There's plenty of diners wym

  • listen to this gem from the 1950s:

All Night Diner - Santo & Johnny

Yes, I miss the old fashion diners we had back in the 1950s/60s. They sure were nice to dine at. I especially miss the 99 ¢ breakfasts with the unlimited cups of coffee.

  • yes i wish there were more that were actually affordable, because i would go all the time. i love diners. but lately the ones in my area were like $40 / person.

  • What's controversial about that #$@!ing opinion?

  • Absolutely we do. When I was in college there was a diner down the street and we ate there almost every week. The food was cheap and good and they were open 24 hours.

  • yall too expensive, charging fees for stupid things, no wonder we don't accept that.

    What are you talking about?

As I said on the original post…. I just love diners is all.

  • I hate diners, 99% of them are terrible at making food.

    [deleted]

Cheese burger and fries. I hate breakfast food. Wtf does it matter?

    [deleted]

Mad just don't care that you like bland terrible food

No need to knock down  one of the few good things to come out of the horrible 1950’s.

  • No. They're dumb

Look some of us don’t get much in life no matter how much know how and try. Some of us love the only good parts of the bad decades.
