My first one, will probably always be my favorite. Excited to check out the sequel too, never did get around to picking it up before. This is actually most of the reason I got a S2, not the only reason, but probably the biggest.
Damn, I forgot that's why, not just because I was broke and had to be very sparing with my purchases. Well, maybe eventually they will do a Wii VC.....
The Wii is almost as Retro as the NES was when the Wii launched, however it's technically not quite as Retro as the Famicom was. Still crazy to think about. And it does show with Gamecube, you can definitely feel the gamecube-ness unqiue to this era of game engines.
The Wii is turning 20 this year which is usually considered vintage (some people say it's 25, others 30). Retro usually means something modern that tries to look old.
I'm gonna be so mad if this happens. That's what i was originally holding out for, but then i realized that would never happen, so when i saw the Best Buy deal where they were giving away Mario Kart for free, i jumped on it. I may never even play Mario Kart on my own system.
It's a big cult favorite among FE fans. Many fan rankings place it among the best in the series.
That said, it is an older game, so the QoL is notably worse than newer FE games. Ugly 3D models, slow animations, and no rewind/permadeath options. But save states should fix the latter. And the actual strategy gameplay and story are still as good as ever
That's what I mean. Recent FE games all have options to disable permadeath entirely or rewind turns to undo fatal mistakes. PoR does not normally have a way to turn off permadeath. If someone dies and you want them back, you have to restart the entire level, which can be up to an hour of progress.
Fortunately, NSO includes save states. So you can use those to rewind mistakes without resetting the battle.
Yup. FE games are turn-based and grid-based. You level up your characters and manage equipment and skills between battles. Then move units around a grid to battle enemies to achieve varying objectives (rout enemies, escape via a certain space, protect a point, etc)
Path of Radiance is the 9th game in the series. But the story takes place in a brand new world with all new characters, so there's no need to play older games first. The protagonist of PoR is Ike, who also appears in Smash Bros and other crossovers.
I've been playing it for the first time recently and I'm on the penultimate level. It's amazing, deffos one of the best I've played. I think Ike is one of the most compelling protagonists in the series, I love his character progression.
I will say, Medium has felt a little too easy for me (and I'm by no means good at these games). Besides a couple stages early on, none have been particularly challenging, and idk if I've been insanely lucky with growths or what, but a lot of my units feel like one-man armies that are barely even getting hit nevermind taking damage. My Nephenee literally feels invincible, like she is so tanky and quick, she could probably solo most stages.
In general PoR is not considered particularly difficult, and the bonus EXP feature allows you to really make your favorite units OP. Nephenee in particular is very good when she gets bonus XP (although some veterans will argue she is overrated as there are plenty of other characters who can become quite OP with BEXP as well).
It was the game I started with. So yes! But I'm very biased.
All 3 FE games available on Switch Online (the 2 GBA games and this GCN game) are pretty good starting points. Each of the games is set in a totally new world with new characters, so there's no need to follow any story order. None of the 3 are especially difficult by series standards. And they all have decent tutorials.
The only thing worth mentioning is that the older FE games do not have an option to disable permadeath. But NSO adds save states. So if you don't like permadeath, just save periodically and you can reset any major deaths.
I'd lean Sacred Stones for the most gentle introduction to the series in general. At least as far as the pre-Awakening games go. Path of Radiance is legendary for a reason though and you absolutely should play it at some point if you like the genre.
What do you mean, Sacred Stones has a prequel? Are you sure you're not mixing it up with FE7(aka The Blazing Blade)? FE7 is a prequel to FE6(Roy's game) and it has a long prologue that follows Lyn and serves as a slow introduction to the mechanics.
I recently started playing through Fire Emblem GBA today because I was tired of waiting for Path of Radiance! Maybe I should play Donkey Kong next for DK64?
Are they ever going to let us get rid of the bullshit background on sides and our stupid icon? I don’t understand why it can just be black bars on the sides and call it a day for non widescreen games
Is this Japanese NSO only? Or is it just a rolling release? I don't seem to have it. The game released in North America, so I don't know why this would be an exclusive.
EDIT: I had to force an update of the gamecube app. It did not update automatically.
Holy. Shit. I've been wanting to pull the trigger on engage but not wanting to and have been playing one of the Gameboy ones to hold me over. This is a big drop I'm diving in next.
Oh my word! What a shadow drop! This is going to delay my backlog clearing play through of Octopath Traveller (which I have finally gotten into after a few attempts since 2019 ish...)
Just hope I can handle the old school strategy permadeath. I am a bit rusty and out of practise.
This was actually, technically, my first FE game. But back when I was a teenager I didn’t like the permadeath and had no idea about it going in. I tried, but dropped it after a couple missions and traded it into GameStop.
Recently got Three Houses, but the text is so small I can barely play it. I'll try this one out. yes I know about the pressing the home button twice, but that just takes me out of the experience.
Been struggling to emulate this properly for a while on my deck. It keeps crashing mid battle and i have to rely on save states to save my progress :/ and i’m not shilling out £200 for a used copy on eBay...
Will gladly pay to upgrade to the expansion tier on NSO for this tonight :) it’s a phenomenal game. A little easy at times compared to the successors due to being the first home console FE, but still a great story with a great cast and fun battles to boot :)
I hope they one day put Wii games on the service too. Just so we can get radiant dawn too and utilise the save carry over features :)
I played the shit out of it. And I was ready to do those extra trial chapters or whatever.
But my memory card got fried.....due to being one of those white memory cards with more space....which just so happens to not have been designed to be kept inside of a Wii.
And it kept me from playing Radiant Dawn, since the bonuses weren't available to transfer.
I never even tried the 3DS Fire Emblems, partly because they look like shit compared to Gamecube graphics.
Not if it increases the size of the fandom and makes the physical release all the more valuable because it's an original and not tied to a monthly fee.
Hardly. I'm glad there's an option for others to enjoy the game too. Though it would also be fine for people to download it if they really want to play it.
Chibi-Robo didn't dent at all, NSO releases don't really affect 2nd hand market prices at all unless it's released physically on modern consoles. Honestly, I could see FE: Radiant Dawn on Wii now getting pricier as people now have the opportunity to actually play this game lol.
Yes. Gamecube games are only available on Switch 2. This is likely because of the rewind feature that requires keeping several save states active at a time.
I really need to play these games. I should take this as a sign to do so. Not this one, though it looks surprisingly good, but the one I bought ages ago when I got my switch. Three Houses I think?
With all the fire emblem games on NSO where should a newbie start? Should they be played in order? Is there a cohesive story between them all? I would like to give them a try but I know nothing of the franchise or genre.
Vast majority of entries are independant stories, most of the time also incompletely different worlds or separated by big timeskips. Any of the games available on Switch (on NSO or as Switch games) are a good starting point in terms of story. Engage includes characters from past entries as a mechanic, but it's not really important to be familiar with them.
Haven't played this one yet, but any of the 2 GBA games have pretty nice tutorials and are not particularly difficult. Sacred Stones has readily available grinding options if you end up finding it hard. Read the story blurbs in the NSO catalogue and pick whichever sounds better.
I wish Nintendo would provide us at least a "What's Coming" to the digital consoles. I read in one place that we're also supposed to be getting Pokemon Colosseum and would like to know if that's true or not.
They did in a sense, when the Gamecube Nintendo classics was announced they showed box art of select games coming to the service in the future. The 3 titles from this reveal that have yet to be released now are: Super Mario Sunshine, Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness and Pokemon Colosseum. So it is true. February 27th is Pokemon day so that is a possible release date for those 2 (fingers crossed).
I loved this game back in the day and then played a fire emblem game for the gba, any other similiar games in the series or in general, I have tried other tactics games over the years and they didn’t click for some reason, including advance wars, the Diseaga games, etc
Am I losing my mind? I thought I saw a post by Nintendo on Facebook that had this game, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, and I believe Super Mario Sunshine in the thumbnail. I assumed all three were released simultaneously. I think I’m going crazy.
We have no idea. That’s what they told us. Almost every month they’ve been releasing 1 game at a time. I’m not having my hopes high but with pokemon day coming out next month, at least one of the pokemon games should be released.
This is a really good one. Top 3 fire emblem game for me easily
My first one, will probably always be my favorite. Excited to check out the sequel too, never did get around to picking it up before. This is actually most of the reason I got a S2, not the only reason, but probably the biggest.
Sequel is on Wii so unless you have a Wii or if Nintendo announces Wii VC, your other bet is to sail the 7 seas
Damn, I forgot that's why, not just because I was broke and had to be very sparing with my purchases. Well, maybe eventually they will do a Wii VC.....
Top one for most people (top one for me at least)
Been waiting for this one. Old school fire emblems age really well
The fact this game is now considered retro makes me feel old lol. It’s a classic though no doubt
I think anything pre awakening has been considered retro since, like, awakening.
The Wii is almost as Retro as the NES was when the Wii launched, however it's technically not quite as Retro as the Famicom was. Still crazy to think about. And it does show with Gamecube, you can definitely feel the gamecube-ness unqiue to this era of game engines.
I still think of Mario Galaxy as that weird new Mario game all my friends have, even though it's almost 20 years old and I've played it twice now
The Wii is turning 20 this year which is usually considered vintage (some people say it's 25, others 30). Retro usually means something modern that tries to look old.
[internal screaming]
It was released over 20 years ago! How time flies.
https://imgur.com/a/1rogodI
Maybe not the Famicom ones
Soundtrack dropped on their Music App today as well.
The fact that they missed their Monday Music drop made me expect something was coming to NSO. Nailed it!
Awesome. Best version of the main Fire emblem theme by far
You know the way you aren't aware of something until someone says it.
I knew that Nintendo dropped music regularly on the app. It's only now that you made me aware that it's usually a Monday.
Is this the first time they've dropped both at the same time? It's good to see, should honestly be the standard for all releases
Mario Paint did so too.
Guess I have to prepare for the new FE this year
I’m praying they do a special switch 2 console. I’m holding out on buying a switch 2 until my prayers have been answered
I'm gonna be so mad if this happens. That's what i was originally holding out for, but then i realized that would never happen, so when i saw the Best Buy deal where they were giving away Mario Kart for free, i jumped on it. I may never even play Mario Kart on my own system.
It's a good game to play with friends, you can take advantage of the game in those situations
I USED TO PRAY FOR TIMES LIKE THIS
Name checks out. Meek is a local hero too.
hell yes
At least something positive about this day… ❤️
Now we're talking
Finally. Now if we can get skies of Arcadia or at least lost kingdom
I'd love a Skies of Arcadia drop. I'd finally get to beat it! Dunno what 15 year old me was thinking renting a JRPG from Blockbuster lol
I never even got the chance to play it but it looks fun and I love pirates and jrpgs so lol great combo
Yes!! I'll finally know who half my FEH characters are
Ike's on this one. Lol.
Twink Ike is, Buff Ike comes later in Radiant Dawn.
Lol I'm more so excited to know more about Black Knight.
Can give you a rundown if you've got questions! Or just let you play it.
I think I'll go in mostly blind, but thank you!
I like Ike.
Well I guess it's time to upgrade my membership. Fire Emblem is one my favorite series and I've never had a chance to play this one!
Same. I haven’t upgraded at all since the release of the Switch 2, this will change that.
Excited to finally play it.
You will love it, the Tellius games are peak
My favorite fire emblem game
Ahhh yeahuh. You got me hyped.
Holy shit. The mad lads. They really did it.
This is over 300$ for the real thing
Yo, what?! Just like that?
It was on the list...
You mean Ike went to that island? You think you know a guy.
No, no, I’m talking about Ike the Greil Mercenary.
The only way we stop getting an overload of Fire Emblem characters in the next Smash is if they're on the list
Is this game good
It's a big cult favorite among FE fans. Many fan rankings place it among the best in the series.
That said, it is an older game, so the QoL is notably worse than newer FE games. Ugly 3D models, slow animations, and no rewind/permadeath options. But save states should fix the latter. And the actual strategy gameplay and story are still as good as ever
wdym? It is permadeath

It’s exactly that. You have a player phase and an enemy phase, and it’s all laid out on a grid.
You ever played Final Fantasy Tactics or something similar?
its the best fire emblem
Yeah it’s the best imo unless you don’t like ps2/gamecube era games. This is a port not a remaster or remake, it’s old school but it’s peak
Yes.
Combined with RD it's an amazing experience. On its own it's great.
Yes, one of the two best FE games (2nd best being the sequel)
Fuck yeah it is.
It's like Final Fantasy Tactics, but with tactics instead of farming.
My favorite FE and now I don't have to get the Wii out to play it! Score!
Congratulations Nintendo! The first non-terrible event of 2026!
PRAISE BE GLORY TO NINTENDO
Best game in the series by far

Also wondering this

Enjoy it dude, the Tellius games are peak
I recently started playing through Fire Emblem GBA today because I was tired of waiting for Path of Radiance! Maybe I should play Donkey Kong next for DK64?
Please do
I prayed for this and it happened.
Now we just need skies of Arcadia
Since we got Soul Calibur 2 out of no where at the beginning, we just might get it
Sega defo doesn't give a damn about it.
Drew?
Fire Emblem before it became a dating sim, hell yeah
This game is so fucking good. Can't wait to check it out again!
Yeah more GameCube games . Smash melee next please
Melee is not gonna happen.
I can dream
I'd prefer they continue with more of the hard to find titles first, Eternal Darkness, Goshin The Giant, Battalion Wars, Geist, Odama.
Are they ever going to let us get rid of the bullshit background on sides and our stupid icon? I don’t understand why it can just be black bars on the sides and call it a day for non widescreen games
It’s insane, I don’t want to play these games because of that
Highly recommended

EDIT: I had to force an update of the gamecube app. It did not update automatically.
How do you force an update?
EDIT: Press + on the GameCube app from the home screen and then software update via Internet. I have it now.
Press the + button while hovering over the app and go to software update
Also - if you're feeling frisky.
Nice. Can’t wait to play.
Finally! So hyped to replay this game. Personally the FE game I consider to be the best
Nice, I still have my Gamecube copy of it, and the Wii Radiant Dawn sequel too.
Fuck yea. This is one of my favorite games ever
I've always thought this to be the best intro to FE, so I hope everyone who can tries this one out.
Oh god, all the games I just bought on sale for Boxing Day are about to get ignored for something that just dropped for free.
I've been wanting to play this a lot, it's the only console Fire Emblem I haven't played.
Holy. Shit. I've been wanting to pull the trigger on engage but not wanting to and have been playing one of the Gameboy ones to hold me over. This is a big drop I'm diving in next.
An accessible way to play Path of Radiance? Officially, without emulating?? What time is this and when is this happening for Radiant Dawn
Whenever they decide to give us an official Wii emulator, lol. Though I'd prefer a remaster bundle of the Tellius games at this point.
Like 6-8 months after they release the NSO Wii emulator
My favorite Fire Emblem.
Always wanted to revisit it.

FUCKING FINALLY!!! :D

Not having Radiant Dawn lined up is going to be problematic
I guess we have to wait for the US trailer because I don't see it.
I'm so fucking hyped.
Do you want to know my story with this game?
I played the shit out of it. And I was ready to do those extra trial chapters or whatever.
But my memory card got fried.....due to being one of those white memory cards with more space....which just so happens to not have been designed to be kept inside of a Wii.
And it kept me from playing Radiant Dawn, since the bonuses weren't available to transfer.
I never even tried the 3DS Fire Emblems, partly because they look like shit compared to Gamecube graphics.
Collectors in shambles?
I think collectors would rather own the game than pay $50+ a year every single year for the mere privilege of playing it
Also, presumably collectors want something physical to, you know, collect.
Not if it increases the size of the fandom and makes the physical release all the more valuable because it's an original and not tied to a monthly fee.
Hardly. I'm glad there's an option for others to enjoy the game too. Though it would also be fine for people to download it if they really want to play it.
I like having my CiB copy though.
Doubt it will affect that price much
I wonder if this raises the GameCube version prices or not. Either way I’m excited!
Probably not, it's mainly for collectors these days, if you really wanted to play it, a GameCube emulator is pretty easy to set up.
Even if you play it on a Gamecube, playing it through Swiss is just so much more convenient.
Its been trending down for a while now, but the game is great. As long as more people get to play it.
Chibi-Robo didn't dent at all, NSO releases don't really affect 2nd hand market prices at all unless it's released physically on modern consoles. Honestly, I could see FE: Radiant Dawn on Wii now getting pricier as people now have the opportunity to actually play this game lol.
If anything it will lower it. This is literally the first time it’s been available to (legally) play without owning the GameCube disc.
I'm very excited to play this with save states and rewind. I've enjoyed this game but permadeath stresses me out so much.
Some awesome music there.
Great game also
Nice
Fire Emblem 4 life.
We like Ike.
YEEEEAAAAAHHHH
They JUST posted that the soundtrack was on Nintendo music. I knew they had a secret! Very cool!
Oh FUCK yeah. Loved Path of Radiance
This is one I was waiting for!
Yeeessssssss
Instant flash backs to playing hookie in elementary (middle?) school and playing this game. Such a cozy game, miss this aesthetic in the series
I was just about to start a replay of Three Houses this weekend, but this might take precedent!
I just bought the Prisim HDMI adapter for my GameCube lol
Nice! This might be my excuse to buy a GameCube controller
Perfect, I tried to play the emulator. It it kept crashing on me.
I LOVED this game.
lmao i literally gave up waiting and finished my play through on emulator like 2 days ago
that for switch 2 only?
Yes. Gamecube games are only available on Switch 2. This is likely because of the rewind feature that requires keeping several save states active at a time.
Can’t wait to be reunited with Lethe and Mordecai after all this time😽
I've been playing it on my totally legit copy (pls no hurt me nintendo ninjas). It's been an absolute blast. Would recommend 100%.
This game is super rare, nice it's finally available!
Nice I saw they added it on Nintendo Music from a notification and wondered
My favorite fire emblem. Played it more times than I could count.
HOLY SHIT FINALLY!!
I had upgraded to be able to play this when it was first announced, not realizing it wasn’t coming anytime soon.
I’m playing that this weekend.
I really wanted a remake but will still Play through this.
When are we getting the pokemon games 😭😭😭
About time we get more games on the gamecube side of things.
WOOOOO
I really need to play these games. I should take this as a sign to do so. Not this one, though it looks surprisingly good, but the one I bought ages ago when I got my switch. Three Houses I think?
Hell yes. Now if only they'd put Radiant Dawn on there.
With all the fire emblem games on NSO where should a newbie start? Should they be played in order? Is there a cohesive story between them all? I would like to give them a try but I know nothing of the franchise or genre.

Just started the GameCube one as I heard its story is good and after my first hour of play I can agree it has my interest enough to keep playing.
I did start it on easy mode as it was the only option with tutorials so hopefully it doesn’t feel to breezy.
Always wanted to play this, I remember looking everywhere for a second hand copy but at that point it was a rare game.
Maybe I’d go for the Expansion Pass now, but I’m strapped for cash, so I can’t.
I do wish the Tellius duo came out as a bundle. That’d be pretty nice ngl.
I’m happy it’s playable on the Switch 2. Look at those eBay prices for this game.
Waiting for Double Dash and Mario golf
I am extremely happy right now
Is it only for switch 2, not switch 1?
The gamecube nso channel is only on switch 2.
Finally a reason to get the Switch 2, I guess ^_^
Does it have dating in it?
LWTS GOOO
I wish Nintendo would provide us at least a "What's Coming" to the digital consoles. I read in one place that we're also supposed to be getting Pokemon Colosseum and would like to know if that's true or not.

February 27th is Pokemon day so that is a possible release date for those 2 (fingers crossed).
I could not find that, even on Google, though I knew I had seen an image somewhere with at least Pokemon Colosseum on it. Thank you kindly 🙏
If you look up April 2025 nintendo direct, and go to 42:48 in the video, you’ll see the images
Once FE Fortunes Weave drops I will have to buy a Switch and I will also get NSO for a bit to play this again.
Now we need Radiant Dawn in some capacity now since they are a pair
I loved this game back in the day and then played a fire emblem game for the gba, any other similiar games in the series or in general, I have tried other tactics games over the years and they didn’t click for some reason, including advance wars, the Diseaga games, etc
Does Nintendo of America hate Fire Emblem again? Nothing about this is on their twitter or youtube channels.
I remember watching gameplays of this game instead of playing it. This and the Wii game are the best games I never played lol
Do you know if they've added the lunatic difficulty level 1, which was only in the Japanese version?
Loving it so far! Looks great on the Switch docked and handheld.
Am I losing my mind? I thought I saw a post by Nintendo on Facebook that had this game, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, and I believe Super Mario Sunshine in the thumbnail. I assumed all three were released simultaneously. I think I’m going crazy.
Nope they said the other titles would be released overtime.
how long is "overtime"?
We have no idea. That’s what they told us. Almost every month they’ve been releasing 1 game at a time. I’m not having my hopes high but with pokemon day coming out next month, at least one of the pokemon games should be released.
It's encouraging to see how many people are trying out the series due to this.
I need skies of arcadia!
what’s the difference?
