Are you referring to power tour for gba? That was my favorite by far haha. I loved climbing through juniors, seniors and varsity and playing at the island open. Idk why they don’t just go back to that formula
I don’t know we haven’t gotten a more modern version of the GBC/GBA golf and tennis games, especially after the success of Golf Story. The criticism for very single release of these Mario Sports games is the lack of content, especially when playing single player. The gameplay itself is always great and the multiplayer tends to be a blast, but we need more to actually do rather than just adding more characters and a new gimmick.
Plus Camelot has deep roots in some story heavy series like Golden Sun and Shining Force. Honestly it's sad that Nintendo is using them like this with the IPs they gave but maybe it's also their choice.
I go back and play through the GBC and GBA Mario Golf games every couple years. The console ones are good, but I love that RPG mode. That stuff is like a warm blanket for me and it's what actually got me into real golf.
I had this for Mario Golf too. I loved being able to control your own non-Mario character, develop your stats, play mini games, explore a semi-open world. It was ahead of its time, honestly; nothing has really hit the same since.
Can I ask why? It seems like the most natural thing to me. What is a solo player going to play first? The story! So given that they'll need to learn the controls, then the intricacies of special shots and all of the different rackets will probably be unlocked through the story at some point too, it makes sense for there to be a lot of training content in there. It's clearly not entirely that, as it shows a couple of boss battles that seem like they must be in the story somewhere, but if it's a 5-10 hour story then I'd expect a solid half of that run time to be learning a technique with a mini-game, playing a regular match, doing a boss that's weak to that technique, then "great job winning your last match, but you should try out this technique next time!", before starting the cycle anew, and frankly that seems like the exact sort of story that a sports game should have
Still going to hold off for reviews and in depth breakdowns of the game's content, but this looks significantly better than the most recent Mario sports games. I was so excited for Battle Strikers and came away so disappointed that I really have not had interest in any new games in these series. I am hoping this one is as fun as the earlier games like Power Tennis were.
It was even more damning once they released the original Mario Strikers on NSO, I played it again when they did and its so much more fun a game than the new game.
Yeah the gameplay was perfected with the stats system, perfect shots and perfect passes but there was nothing to do in the game. The only gameplay changes I didn’t like were shrinking the size of the field, no unique stages and ni unique dodges per character but those feel like they were cut due to lack of dev time
It feels tighter, but were people playing these games to have something more technical or more fun? The charm and chaos was taken out and that's what makes the games fun, not the competitiveness imo.
You should be doing this for literally all game releases. There’s no reason to pre-order a game when we can wait 24 hours after release and have thousands of hours of reviews to watch to make up our mind.
I always think about getting these for my kids, I would always rent these games for a weekend or two back in the day, they don’t hold my interest for long. But considering they almost never go on sale past 40 bucks and used copies are always the same price as a sale price, I can’t justify it with how little is actually in these games
Fairly extensive trailer. I know many people were hoping for baseball or other sports, but the Mario Tennis series has always been my favorite Mario sports games - definitely hyped for this one! I hope the online mode stays active for a long time. Game's looking great.
There’s def a shortage of solid Arcade NBA/basketball games. Tried to find the old NBA Jam game I played on PS3 back in the day, delisted on Xbox and you’d have to have a physical copy, no backwards compatibility on digital. It sucks. Would love a Mario basketball game.
I actually still have my copy of NBA jam tournament edition for SNES, though I'd have to figure out how to get that working on my tv. Incidentally, I have this dream of buying one of those $500 home arcade cabinets and modding it to have modern era players. Turns out there's a tiny community still keeping that going.
But ya man, 2v2 arcade bball formula with Mario. I think they have done it before but with this level of polish would be the best.
Aces was amazing mechanically, but like most of the sports games ran dry if you weren't into competetive online.
This looks like its bring back a lot more trials and wacky modes for single player. Adventure still seems like it will be short and sweet like the Aces one instead of something substantial that most people want. Still feels like the bulk of this will be playing online, just with a lot more content available from the go instead of drip fed.
This clearly takes the baseline of Aces animations/gameplay and builds a ton of external modes and options on top of it, which is exciting since Aces was the best Mario tennis game yet. It seems like they've removed the meter star shot/slowdown mechanic, so hopefully the fever rackets aren't too dumbed down. Aces had a surprising amount of mechanical depth.
I’m actually curious if they managed to improve on the swing mode for Aces, which was darn good apart from the lag. If they can reduce the input lag to that of Wii Sports coupled with the precise execution for the different shot types, I would be very interested.
It does look like we may have to temper our expectations for "Adventure Mode" Seems like more of tutorial mode. Everything else looks really cool but probably once again lacking in single player content
I’m surprised, this looks a lot better than the last iteration in the series. Takes me back to the first one and playing it after school with friends. Good times.
Or very least out the original on the he Nintendo online subscription. Due to the lack of characters with past few Mario sports spin-offs I was sceptical about them touching Baseball, but with the amount of characters in Tennis Fever and Kart World? Yeah, maybe they should do Sluggers.
Not happening soon. Baseball isn't popular outside of America and Japan and even then it's losing popularity. Sluggers didn't even release in European regions at all.
Tennis and soccer are still more popular worldwide so we'll likely get a Strikers game first.
Huh? MLB The Show consistently sells millions for PlayStation with every annual iteration. Should Sony stop releasing it since baseball isn’t popular outside of two of the biggest gaming countries in the world?
I still can't wrap my head around the $70 ask. I get $80 for Zelda, $70 for DK was fine. I can't see $70 for this anymore than I could $80 for Mario Kart.
I guess it depends how much content there is and how much time you can put into it. For me, I have more hours in MKW in the last 6ish months than I had in 8D in the last 6ish years, if we're talking $ to hours played then it's already a fractional ratio not even counting that I obviously got it cheap in the bundle. If this is anywhere near the same, then I can totally understand the price
If the open world/zone part of MKW had a high quality story mode like Diddy Kong Racing, I'd absolutely see the $80 value. I can't see it as it is, though.
I spent 75 hours just in the free roam finding every medallion, panel and p switch, that's longer than I spend on most RPGs and I loved every second of it. Whilst I wouldn't complain about a story mode of some sort, I don't see it as a necessary thing at all, the game is full of content. And that's not even mentioning the other 75 hours I've got in different modes of racing...
This looks a LOT of fun. Have the most recent games always had the main theme from the N64 game? Thats mainly my game I played the most. I loved how this looks.
Hmmm. Pretty good trailer. Seems like they listened to the feedback and added content that aren’t just characters like the switch 1 era. Also seems to be more “party” game focused like the older Mario sports games, which I heavily prefer over their online live service approach from the previous generation, REALLY hoping the next sports games follow suit. Still tho, $70 is a little steep for a game like this, but that’s just unfortunately how games will be priced these days….(thanks Sony)
I feel like such a goof because i bought the Mario Tennis Aces a year ago on sale and I just have not played it at all. I didn't know they'd be putting out a new one so soon. Not the best $40 or $50 I've ever spent that's for sure. Now I have to decide whether to get the new one or just play the old one
This does look pretty good so far. Will likely still wait till reviews are out... but I am once again asking Nintendo to acknowledge that other sports exist outside of Tennis. I know we've recently got Soccer and Golf again but both weren't nearly as good as people expected.
Meanwhile baseball has been forgotten about and it's just a shame because both Superstar Baseball and Super Sluggers were IMO amazing games. I just want another Mario baseball man :(
For me, im not a sports person. I do however buy pretty much every Mario golf and Mario tennis game. I think those sports have just proven themselves to have enough universal appeal that there's guaranteed sales. Id love another Mario Hoops though.
Sounds like you’re a sports person to me. Plus baseball is the best. It’s also ironic how popular it is in Japan. Mario baseball has no misses unlike tennis, golf, and now soccer. Time to release a good Nintendo baseball game. I don’t make the rules
Crazy how it all takes is lots of unique character abilities and wacky maps to make people interested in a Mario Sports game.
What happened on Switch 1? They leaned into new gameplay mechanics but made everything boring. Just shocking how bad they missed with the Mario Sports games there
I become more choosy. If it’s not a must have, I’ll wait. We all got a massive backlog. Besides, I don’t need to justify my actions and thoughts to you.
You're downvoted for this? $70 seems high for a Mario Sports spinoff and since when is voting with your wallet a bad thing? That's how you make a difference as a consumer. Becoming more selective on $70 games seems financially responsible as opposed to just mindlessly purchasing games.
I’m tired of people complaining about a $70 price tag for what could be years of fun and memories. Should you wait for reviews if you’re unsure of a specific game? Absolutely. But to act like $70 is that much money for the value of what a video game can bring is just stupid.
Is this satire? Why is it controversial to say "I don't think every Nintendo title needs to be $70"? The potential long-time fun that this game has isn't enough for me to invest, I'm interested, but not enough to pay that price and that's been a reoccurring thing recently. I mean they mentioned variable pricing for their games recently, is Mario Tennis not a perfect game for that?
This looks good but it's definitely a wait and see type of game for me. I need to know if it has a steady online community when it doesn't look fit for single player.
Won't ever bother spending $70 on a Mario sports title from Nintendo lol. $40 and it's a day one, even if it's lacking in content. Any higher than that and I'll probably never get around to playing it.
The original switch ruined all my favorite sports games and I'm glad they haven't made a baseball game yet so I'll be very skeptical about this even though it's tennis again but there's nothing to play on my switch 2 currently
Does this have motion controls? I just the experience of wii sports tennis again and I don't understand why Nintendo doesn't care about one of its most popular mechanics of all time
Nothing specific actually, games that don't just move the needle but shatter it. To name a couple I had high hopes for Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong but frankly Mario Kart World was a huge let down for me after a 9 year wait, and I found Donkey Kong as 3D platformer to be mind numbingly easy and repetitive.
I'd love a new animal crossing but looks like all we're getting anytime soon is minimal effort Switch 2 version that Nintendo thinks is okay to charge $60 for.
The roll out of Switch 1 updated games is also painfully slow and most of them are PAID upgrades which is downright disgusting behaviour since most of these updates are just resolution/fps bumps. Things MS, Sony and 3rd party devs update for free.
yeah idk I just think you might have slightly unrealistic expectations and too narrow interests. the games you want will probably come but dev cycles are weird and you just might have to wait longer unfortunately. bummer for sure but all in due time
We've had more free updates to the first party Switch 1 games than we have paid upgrades. All the paid upgrades (except Pokemon Z-A) have included new game content too.
I hate that the roster is literally just Aces but somehow adding babies caused it to have less sauce. I guess that’s what happens when you have 8 newcomers and 5 are babies, one of which was invented solely for the sake of fucking over Daisy again cuz these devs are notorious for hating her in particular
That’s… actually way more content than I expected.
Yeah but the adventure mode being mostly a tutorial kinda sucks
I miss the single player mode from it think it was the GBC version. I played that but all the time as a kid.
Are you referring to power tour for gba? That was my favorite by far haha. I loved climbing through juniors, seniors and varsity and playing at the island open. Idk why they don’t just go back to that formula
Just looked it up, didn’t even know they made it for GBA. I definitely played the GBC version, which had a similar adventure mode.
The Game Boy Color version was excellent, it was similar to Pokémon and other RPGs where you continued to level up your player and challenge teams.
Golf Story is such a comfort game for me and I wish there were more like it.
Yeah I’m replaying the GBA one now. Gameplay is sooooo good on modern games, but that rpg mode is where the fun’s at
I had this for Mario Golf too. I loved being able to control your own non-Mario character, develop your stats, play mini games, explore a semi-open world. It was ahead of its time, honestly; nothing has really hit the same since.
Yeah the gbc and gba versions were excellent. The gbc version is on nso if you wanna replay it
Can I ask why? It seems like the most natural thing to me. What is a solo player going to play first? The story! The old tennis games were basically RPGs and were really fun
Think about it carefully, this approach is exactly the same as SF6.
So this game is essentially a fighting game.
Hopefully learned from the switch version which was a content desert
Still going to hold off for reviews and in depth breakdowns of the game's content, but this looks significantly better than the most recent Mario sports games. I was so excited for Battle Strikers and came away so disappointed that I really have not had interest in any new games in these series. I am hoping this one is as fun as the earlier games like Power Tennis were.
Strikers on Switch was such a letdown.
I really hope they try again, it’d be a shame if they ended it there
It was even more damning once they released the original Mario Strikers on NSO, I played it again when they did and its so much more fun a game than the new game.
I feel like the core gameplay of the new Strikers is tighter and more technical but there is 0 content.
I’ll never forgive my ex’s friends husband who convinced me to get strikers on a whim. What a boring ass game
lol “someone” would have sufficed
I am a big fan of the Mario sports games but the recent ones are not as fun cause they are mostly a get the ULT/Super and then get the point or goal
I’d rather it be more fluid like Battle Strikers wasnt fun after a while cause you couldn’t really score without the super
I enjoyed golf, but strikers was complete ass
You should be doing this for literally all game releases. There’s no reason to pre-order a game when we can wait 24 hours after release and have thousands of hours of reviews to watch to make up our mind.
I usually do wait if I am not completely sold on a game, I don't really need the lecture on how I spend my money on games.
No one is lecturing you on how you choose to spend your money....
Hopefully the switch 2 Mario sports games start a trend of feature complete content rich games
Or it’ll be just like last time where Tennis comes out as a banger and everything after that gets worse
I always think about getting these for my kids, I would always rent these games for a weekend or two back in the day, they don’t hold my interest for long. But considering they almost never go on sale past 40 bucks and used copies are always the same price as a sale price, I can’t justify it with how little is actually in these games
Why do you not rent them then? It’s what I do. More people should use their libraries imo
The amount of places that let you rent games is very limited these days.
Really? All 4 of my nearest libraries have games.
Feature complete but no more updates.
Fairly extensive trailer. I know many people were hoping for baseball or other sports, but the Mario Tennis series has always been my favorite Mario sports games - definitely hyped for this one! I hope the online mode stays active for a long time. Game's looking great.
Mario Hockey 🏒
If this could be a spiritual successor to NHL Hitz that would be amazing.
Super mario sports mix
Basketball for me. Feel like it would sell really well.

But ya man, 2v2 arcade bball formula with Mario. I think they have done it before but with this level of polish would be the best.
I just wish Camelot got out of Mario sport dungeons for a bit, just to make some other type of game. An RPG perhaps
For real. Let them out into the Sun for a bit. I'm sure they'd be Golden.
Súper sluggers was just so thought out and the amount of different mechanics and plays were insane.
I personally wasn't a fan of the fighter game elements from Aces, so this fever racket replacement looks like it could be a great change.
This looks like the definitive follow-up to Mario Power Tennis I’ve wanted for years
This clearly takes the baseline of Aces animations/gameplay and builds a ton of external modes and options on top of it, which is exciting since Aces was the best Mario tennis game yet. It seems like they've removed the meter star shot/slowdown mechanic, so hopefully the fever rackets aren't too dumbed down. Aces had a surprising amount of mechanical depth.
Looks pretty good!
Welcome back Mario Power Tennis
I'm surprised this actually seems full of things to do. The recent Mario sports games have been lack luster.
Does this mean only local tournaments?! I sure hope not. That was my favorite part of Aces. Much better than standard ranked matches IMO
Agreed. I loved the Tournament Format to provide mini-goals during an Online Session beyond just grinding MMR endlessly.
At lest we won’t see this in the next Nintendo direct
Man when tf are we gonna get another Mario superstars baseball
I’m surprised, this looks a lot better than the last iteration in the series. Takes me back to the first one and playing it after school with friends. Good times.
Looks cool but I'm still waiting for Sluggers sequel...
We just got a Strikers game...
Yeah and it sucked. I'm talking about a Switch 2 Strikers game. Soccer is way bigger than baseball so it'll probably still happen.
That's lame
Huh? MLB The Show consistently sells millions for PlayStation with every annual iteration. Should Sony stop releasing it since baseball isn’t popular outside of two of the biggest gaming countries in the world?
Fair but we haven't had a new Mario Baseball in nearly 20 years. There's probably a reason for it.
i guess latin america doesnt exist
This looks pretty decent actually, but I still wish they’d finally make a new Mario Baseball game.
I still can't wrap my head around the $70 ask. I get $80 for Zelda, $70 for DK was fine. I can't see $70 for this anymore than I could $80 for Mario Kart.
I’d love to play Nintendo games on my switch 2 but $100 CAN is just too much for me.
And that's not even mentioning the other 75 hours I've got in different modes of racing...
damn, sounds like torture.
Nope, my second favourite experience on the Switch 2, only after Hades 2. I had an absolute blast
This looks a LOT of fun. Have the most recent games always had the main theme from the N64 game? Thats mainly my game I played the most. I loved how this looks.
Does anyone know if this will have online doubles? Like can I play doubles teaming up with a friend online.
i won't be fooled again!
Hate the stupid fever racquet things. The OG Mario tennis is still be thest because of its simple but nuanced play style. This looks like trash
You can play regular tennis without the gimmicks in this game, just like you could in ACES. They show it in this trailer.
Not the best $40 or $50 I've ever spent that's for sure. Now I have to decide whether to get the new one or just play the old one
8 years is not too soon
I sorry, but I’m still very leery about this game.
I’ve been burned by too many Mario sports games over the past decade to be excited for this one. And I’m not just talking about the Switch ones.
The last unambiguously great Mario sports game in my opinion was Mario Golf World Tour on 3DS, and nothing has come close since.
Crazy how it all takes is lots of unique character abilities and wacky maps to make people interested in a Mario Sports game.
What happened on Switch 1? They leaned into new gameplay mechanics but made everything boring. Just shocking how bad they missed with the Mario Sports games there
Was fooled by Aces and the last Mario golf game. Skipping this one
$70? Nope.
you showed them!
Thank you. I always vote with my wallet.
Do you expect game prices to never increase? Will you never buy a new game again?
They are smoking something crazy with that price.
Will forever hold out hope for a Mario American football game.
i’ve never seen baby waluigi is that new?
This game is hard.
This looks good but it's definitely a wait and see type of game for me. I need to know if it has a steady online community when it doesn't look fit for single player.
Have they released or anyone seen screens of any record/stat keeping capabilities through the menus at all?
This game actually looks more appealing to me than Aces. The fever rackets remind me of the power shots from Mario Power Tennis
This game was actually given to HP? Has Nintendo finally realized this game is actually a fighting game?
I played mario tennis on n64 recently and had a blast, haven't played any other but just preordered that one
Won't ever bother spending $70 on a Mario sports title from Nintendo lol. $40 and it's a day one, even if it's lacking in content. Any higher than that and I'll probably never get around to playing it.
If it's exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2, why the gameshare shows old systems?
A lot of switch 2 titles you can game share with an older switch
ah it's like a cloud streaming, didn't know how it works
it is local only tho
I think some games you can gameshare over wifi, but said games have to specify that it's possible, and most don't
I don't like sports games or racing games but the switch 2 is surely getting a lot of both that somehow still look appealing and fun to me.
When will we get Mario Curling?
The original switch ruined all my favorite sports games and I'm glad they haven't made a baseball game yet so I'll be very skeptical about this even though it's tennis again but there's nothing to play on my switch 2 currently
This looks loaded
lol $70 for tennis
Am I the only one who's like really impressed with this trailer?
Jfc stop with this “am I the only one 🤓” nonsense. Not likely!!
Touchy…
Looks like a switch 1 game
looks the same as the previous one
Would be really fun for $20. Can’t see spending $70 on this one.
Do you have a concept of how expensive things are? When has a Mario tennis game ever been anywhere near that cheap??
Does this have motion controls? I just the experience of wii sports tennis again and I don't understand why Nintendo doesn't care about one of its most popular mechanics of all time
That’s in switch sports. Joycons on S1 were so busted. I’m glad they allow people to use pro controllers
This looks like an upgrade from Aces. Hopefully it's fun, I'll pick it up for sure. I really hope they do a Mario Golf heaps of content and gameplay.
Please be good. Please be a good game that's worth the money at launch.
Wow my favorite
Let me guess another lukewarm game drop for my Switch 2. Where are all the bangers at like Switch 1 first year.
what exactly do you want
Okay I guess that was specific.
yeah idk I just think you might have slightly unrealistic expectations and too narrow interests. the games you want will probably come but dev cycles are weird and you just might have to wait longer unfortunately. bummer for sure but all in due time
We've had more free updates to the first party Switch 1 games than we have paid upgrades. All the paid upgrades (except Pokemon Z-A) have included new game content too.
Aces was trash, Mario Golf on Switch was awful, Strikers sucked. No thanks.
I wasnt that big on aces, but Mario Golf on the switch is one of my most played games. I love it.
Toadstool Tour was 50x better. And 20 years older
ACES was fun.
I hate that the roster is literally just Aces but somehow adding babies caused it to have less sauce. I guess that’s what happens when you have 8 newcomers and 5 are babies, one of which was invented solely for the sake of fucking over Daisy again cuz these devs are notorious for hating her in particular
Is it weird that this isn't coming out on Switch 1 as well, or is it just me?
