I accepted a job offer for the shipyard a month ago and I have a drug test on January 5th. What is the welding school like? I’m not sure how long it is and if I have a high chance of failing right there and then and not getting the job.

  • me too my drug test is the 15th just accepted an offer too

  • Well, depending if your x18 or x11 will depend on your experience. X11 they try to have you out of there in about 1 and a half to 3 months X18 can be significantly longer since there are more processes to get qualified on. But if you’re worried about washing out as long as you show up on time every day they will put you in another trade.

I’m not sure what X I’m on but I’m just not sure what the next step is after the drug test/physical exam. The job listing disappeared the second after I applied.

After that I think they call you for respirator fit and orientation.

Oh okay thank you anything else I should know?

Drug test, physical, respirator fit, agility/strength test and background are all the steps before getting a start date.

Oh so the DSP is different from the agility/strength test?

There’s two “physicals” the clinic exam which everyone gets, and the agility which is in addition and only for trades.

I did all of those in June and still haven’t got a start date 🥲😂 not even a background check 🤔

Background is usually last, you may want to contact your talent and acquisition rep.. normally you’re notified by email both of next steps or if there is a problem.

  • My mom is an x18 welder, she literally moved to NN a few years ago with no prior experience whatsoever and she loves her job. Both her and her husband worked on the same crew for a year or two. She made it through school in three months but that’s definitely on the quicker end of things
