I saw this in the vb subreddit and it got me thinking... What are y'all's worst food experiences here in Newport News?

  • This is like 50% of the restaurants on the peninsula. You pay 4 star prices for 2 star food

  • IHOP in on Jefferson 🤢

The last time I ate there it was absolute dog shit! Never tf again.

  • Honestly I haven’t had inherently “bad” experiences but salad works in city center isn’t that good, it’s overpriced for a small amount and mediocre food. The staff was nice tho. Taste right across the street is fantastic tho! A bit pricey but the food is always 10/10 and so is service

  • Cheddars now unfortunately

Idk what happened to that place

Cheddars been bad. They shut down in the early 2010s due to an unimaginable roach infestation. The Facebook videos going around were horrifying

Early 2010s was the last time I went prior to last time

Never heard about that infestation tho 😬

I was in the restaurant industry at the time, so it was definitely on my radar.

  • TBH, most places around here have gotten awful over the last 5-6 years. Especially for takeout, but dining in as well. Most places seem like the cooks and servers are just not putting any lovin into it. And I mean, I get it, shit wages for a job that no one is ever happy about....but a little pride in your work goes a long way, for the consumer.

I'm convinced HR residents, especially those on the peninsula, don't like food because otherwise they'd demand more edible options. This is coming from a Kansas transplant. Let that sink in: KANSAS.

Seconded, spent 5 years in NN and every. single. option. sucks ass. Even the local spots stink.

Sure, Benny’s down in the shipyard is great, and there are a few aaaaaaalright chains, but nothing that makes you go “wow that’s incredible”. It’s all just so “generican”

was going to say... I don't eat out in this city if I can help it.

  • Tuscany and Juan’s had roaches. Hibachi grill&Sushi buffet is pretty bad

I know Tuscany is cheaper but just go to The Vineyard in Kiln Creek instead, better service, better food, no roaches. 3-5$ more expensive though

    Not Tuscany 😭

I said the same thing when I saw it running up the wall

    TUSCANY NOOOOOO

They might have fixed the problem but I haven’t been since 😪

nooo dont tell me this i wanted to go try some cheap hibachi :(

Go to city buffet on denbigh/ Warwick. It’s the best Chinese bufffet

  • Hoss's deli is not family friendly it's a good place to get a fight or in trouble

Or get towed less than a minute after you park LOL

But it's right across from the video store, the family can eat and then pick out a movie!

  • Al Fresco. Tasted like their bread was frozen prior. Harpoon Larry's is hit or miss - except we love their hushpuppies.

Harpoon Larrys was so much better when it was a hole in the wall off of Armistead.

The sauce on the pasta was so god damn dry and tasteless

Ive been twice and was not impressed either time. Yet some people swear by it.

  • $17 for a bowl at CAVA yesterday 😅😅

i havent had the one in NN but the cava in VB slaps

  • If you just want a good burger and fries- Beervana. Not too expensive either.

  • Al Fresca on Jefferson in Oyster Point Square, went here thinking I would get some nice Italian for a date night, I was sorely mistaken. Never again.

  • Hotdog king. The hotdog buns have more volume than the hotdog and taste like you’re biting into bread and potted meat

  • Hot Pot in Denbigh

I don't think this was the restaurant's fault, genuinely! I've been there many times and I only got sick there once.

My friend's idiot boyfriend ordered frog legs and put them on the shared grill and must've mistakenly used my tongs on them. I got so sick... Fever, nauseous, puking, sweating, hot and cold flashes, all right before I had to go back to work for the fall. Apparently frog legs carry salmonella at a much higher rate! I was ready to kill him.
