I'm not new to Reddit, but this has always confused me. I post a question, get a good number of replies and upvotes, often the correct answer or a helpful reply is in there. Then an hour or two later it says it has been removed by the mods for reasons unknown - I rarely get a reason.

Okay. Yet - my question is NOT deleted. I can still see it and read the answers. I can upvote them if I want to. I have also found plenty of "deleted" questions in the wild that I could read and upvote. Once or twice I was even able to add a new answer to the question, which makes no sense. How does that work????

My question is" why do "deleted questions" not really get deleted? Why are they not simply designated as "locked posts"?

(I have looked through the FAQ but did not find the answer there).

  • Welcome to r/NewToReddit, /u/JellyPatient2038! Thanks for posting. Your post has been flaired 'Needs attention' so we can easily identify which posts require answers. Someone will be along to help you shortly.

  • So moderators can "remove" a post (users can "delete" a post.

This "removes" the post from the subreddit. It means anyone going into the surbeddit fresh will not see it.

The post still exists. Though its not too easy to find: * It can be visible to users who had it placed in the Reddit feed before it was removed * It can be accessed by your profile. * It can be accessed by mods in that subreddit. * It can be accessed by users who already have comments on the post via their profile (or someone accessing their profile).

People can still comment on a post that is just removed

Moderators can also "lock" a post. That stops further comments from users on that post (mods can still comment on locked posts).

A post can be: * Removed * Locked * Removed AND locked

Has Reddit ever considered genuinely removing questions from the site?

Admins (paid employees of Reddit) can remove a post from the website. Thought that generally requires you to break the Reddit sitewide content policy

Reddit site wide rules are listed in the Content Policy.

You can also get a feel for them by looking at the report options. Look for the overflow menu (...) and select "report" on this comment. Everything there except "breaks r/newtoreddit's rules" are the site wide rules.

  • The same thing happened to me. If you find a solution, please let me know.
