I passed my EMT-B class with an A and got ~90% on my final this week. Would it be a good idea to schedule my NREMT exam as soon as possible so I can keep the info fresh in my mind? Is getting a good score at my school's written exam a good indicator that I should just go for it now or should I study for another 2 weeks or so?
Yes! Definitely while it is fresh!
I took my state exam 7 days after my class final and passed first try. Feels good to have it done. The sooner the better, I think
Agreed, scheduled mine exactly one week after my final. It was nice to have a school where they immediately put my course completion in
I waited 4 months, I do not recommend, Take That Damn Test! Get it over with 🫡😂
I passed first try but added unnecessary stress
In the same boat. Finished my class last friday, scheduled my test for thursday. If I fail I’m out $100, but in my mind 1 week is more than enough time to study.
Yes—definitely schedule your exam ASAP. The farther out from class you get, the harder it will be to remember a lot of the information, especially if you’re not using it every day. I took my EMT-B exam the week after my class, and I’m glad I did it early.
In terms of your school’s written exam being any sort of indicator for how well you’ll do, it’s hard to say. Did you guys do any NREMT-style questions? (My medic school uses a program called Platinum for all of our quizzes/tests/grades, which is supposed to be relatively accurate to the NREMT style.) If you haven’t been exposed to any of their question style, I would look into taking some practice tests online, because there is a difference between knowing your stuff and knowing how to prove it via NREMT questions. There are a tonnnnn of threads here with resources and test-taking advice, so definitely give those a browse if you’re unsure.
I finished on Saturday and passed the NREMT on Tuesday. Take it while the material is fresh.
For EMT B yes, asap.
Paramedic is a bit different, most schools have clinicals and then internship lasting for like 3-4 months after your last written test. So it would benefit to study for 5-7 days before taking the test rather than right after the last day of internship.
Never heard of clinical after medic school. In NY you do it all at same time.
Well mine was didactic, then clinicals then field internship in California. So there was a big gap between classroom stuff and the nremt test.
Thats a weird way to do it. Big gap from learning cardiology drugs to putting them to use. In NY first week youre expected to be in OR rotation and have atleast two successful incubation. Second week you should be in ER doing blood draws and starting IVs. By middle of second month on ambulance rotations. Your other hospital rotations open up as you do the chapter in text book.
I'm sure you guys give a lot more in terms of cardiology drugs in NY than like LA in California does for example.
It's a weird way to do it for sure, I always feel like clinicals should be intertwined into didactic rather than one huge block of it at the end that is very mentally exhausting.
Yep. Take NREMT and any state exams needed right away.
Statistically the odds of passing go down every week ya wait, yes pls asap
Schedule it ASAP.
I took it the day after class and am glad I did. Got lucky my instructors submitted my ATT so fast tho
Yes. Precisely yes. You wanna do NREMT asap so you have everything fresh
I have a little different take on this. First of all though, go ahead and take it ASAP if you think you are ready. The thing is the NREMT test questions are likely going to be different than the chapter questions you had in class. I took the test a few weeks later and spent that time transitioning to the NREMT format and focusing just on the nature of that specific test. A group of almost 10 of us from class did the same, taking it between 2-6 weeks after the end of school and all of us passed. Some that took it right away didn’t pass first time. We were in a 6 month program that really prepared us for the job, but didn’t focus specifically for the test other than advice on how to prep for it, your school may have been different. I do think continuing to study beyond class is a good way to find weak spots and remedy them as long as you are disciplined and actually do study.
Please, schedule it while everything is fresh. If you wait 2,4,6 weeks, you’re going to add unnecessary stress onto yourself.
Yes the sooner the better. In our course, our Instructor let us take the test if we had a high enough grade to where the final would put us over the passing 70% anyway, so I got to take mine 2 weeks before class ended. I went through all the usual feelings of "oh no I don't think I did great" but got kicked out at 70 questions and passed my first test.
If you wait longer than a month after class, the 'use it or lose it' will start to take effect.

Generally it's better to do it ASAP. My instructors said you probably don't want to wait more than a few months at most.
Yeah i took it this last thursday, the final wad the week prior. I passed after 70 questions in 30 minutes
In general, I think everyone should schedule the exam for as soon as possible after finishing class, and then study until test day. The NREMT has shared stats that say the longer you wait, the less likely you are to pass first time, with a huge drop after 30 days.
Take it ASAP. I just took mine and I would have to wait for an in person testing site till january but I rescheduled and did an online. DEF DO ONLINE !!! It has a lot more availability and a lot sooner. DO NOT WAIT
