something similar (not this extreme) happened to me with a car door. nail decayed and fell off after the blood was released from under the nail. it was terrible
It was mainly the pressure buildup that was painful. The first few days we were still at sea and did not have the equipment to release the blood under the nail. It felt like it was going to explode.

Removing the entire nail is not necessary, and may be detrimental to an ingrown nail. Also, painful

Use scissors to try and pry most of it up, then wiggle it off. Grows back absolutely fine.
