  • I do EEG as a part of a study on sickle cell disease. Unfortunately, this issue has been a very difficult part while working with this population for this particular study. You’d think that there would be better innovation to allow for EEG’s to be done more seamlessly on Black individuals who wear their hair either naturally or with protective hairstyles. It’s a huge gap in my opinion and especially for a population that can already have some misgivings about the research community us having non-inclusive research equipment makes this even worse.

Thanks for this. It's really interesting because it seems even our ethics get accepted knowing we're excluding populations... As you say its such a huge overlooked gap, its so baffling to me. I spoke with a few of the manufacturers and they basically just shooed me off as if its not a problem. Rather disconcerting to be honest...

But who knows, potentially from this data collection, maybe we can provide some evidence to say actually we ALL want a solution and actually NEED a solution. That is my hope at least.

I really appreciate the comment though, and participation.

  • A colleague of mine does eeg studies. They welcome all hair types but not all hair styles. Cornrows and other tight braids prevent the leads from going where they need to go.

  • Turkish EEG researcher here, I need to say research with hijab users can get a bit hard for the lab since it requires the male lab assistants to evacuate the labratory. There may not be female assistants all the time so we need to schedule the day according to the participant. Also sometimes lock the door to make sure the participants are comfortable.

Other than that I prefer curly head rather than bald head in the empedence lowering part :D
