In the locker room at the gym, I overheard a guy around 20 years old say to his mate: “I really hate it when someone gets naked in here.”
Dude, you’re in a GYM LOCKER ROOM yes, people change here so they can shower after working out. So what?
We’re all men, we all have a schlong hanging between our legs, who cares? Just look away or stay out of the locker room if you’re that scared of dicks.
Where did it all go wrong when you apparently can’t even be naked in a locker room anymore?
When and why I dont know.
But it is known that one generation is more prudish than the other. It kind of swings back and forth. Our parents where flower power etc, our grandparents where very conservative. Our grandkids will be less prude again
Indeed, it swings back and forth.
I wish lol
Hahahaha, aaaawh🫂
We're talking about the schlong here, right?
Or, left to right. (Think about it).
Lotta generations between flower power and Gen Z (the current young and pride generation), and I wouldn't call Gen X or Gen Y/millennial particularly prude
I dont think its as rigid as generational lines but it goes back and forth through the decades. Showering in your underwear started 15 years ago and was weird. Now its the norm in a lot of sportteams under 25 year olds
Both of these facts are wild to me. What the fuck
Globally among western countries also less alcohol and less sex, albeit not because of moral reasons
Yea, but this has nothing to do with moral. This is more opinion and conservatism labeled as moral.
Nudity in a place to get dressed or freshen up isn’t ’un-moral’
I wonder if it will switch back again with the way in which smartphones (and thus cameras) are everywhere nowadays. It's so easy to end up naked on the internet without your knowledge these days if you're not careful who's around.
Maybe with all the ai stuff people will let go again since you dont even need to be seen nude anymore to end up nude on the internet
Phones with cameras don't help
Swings back and forth, pun intended?
In Finland literally nobody cares, even at the public swimming pool changing room. People of all ages just naked.
But there are also only like 5 people in finland and 4 of them are siblings
This makes it sound like a natural mechanism, but it's not. Several generations can be prudish, one after another.
I think this is correct. Although I think this also has to do with the strong influence of more conservative cultures into the Netherlands (and probably a lot of other countries that are/were more progressive too).
For me it doesn’t really matter, if I have to I will but I don’t like it.
Men can't commiting crimes anymore :(
C'mon it's just one guys opinion.
Right? Just ask him.. why do you hate it when people are nak-MY EYES ARE UP HERE DUDE
I think it’s different now because people don’t really respect privacy and often take pictures/selfies in changing rooms. Younger generations tend to be a little more aware of this and may prefer to not make a surprise nude cameo in some rando’s post-workout pump ig story and vice-versa. My gym has signs reminding people to not take pictures in the locker room for this exact reason.
Additionally, some people are totally ignorant about it. Lockers are configured high and low; I’ve had the misfortune of some dude walk up next to me as I put my stuff in a lower locker, and drop his pants, inadvertently exposing his bum and dong mere centimetres away from my face. That’s abnormal.
And if neither case, like okay. Not everyone wants to see some guy’s dong. Let a man live
TLDR: Younger generations’ “prudishness” could have emerged as a response to the awareness of the omnipresent camera and social media. Valid in my opinion.
when camera became available on every phone. same thing for being topless at the beach. perverts dont even need to hide anymore to get all the shots they want
Do men worry about pervs with cameras?
Probably not necessarily about pervs, but about becoming the next meme.
yes? maybe you want your body exposed online by some perverts - I don’t.
yet more onlyfans than ever with guys and gurls showing their nakedness
what’s your point? they chose to post these pictures? are you saying that perverts taking pictures of people is normal and legal?
I am not bothered by other men naked in the locker room. But I myself am too shy to leave the shower without underwear, or at least with a towel around my waist.
You should do it, it’s liberating
It really is
When ur the one with the dick out, then u gotta get the mindset of "hell yeah, I got my dick out" and you feel them takin a nice breather and realise "damn, all these guys r chickens for not having their schlong dong do the whompwhomp" and then u wanna be naked everywhere
Heard from a friend
And people showering with underpants on.. Whats up with that..
Sometimes it’s a religious thing. I play football and the Muslims who I play with always shower with boxers on. Something about covered from waist to knees
At least they're cut so probably not that much dick cheese 🍆 🧀
The only one thinking about that is you, buddy.
Weird ass thing to say man
MB y'all I thought I was in a gay subreddit 🤔
Some people just don’t want to be naked in front of strangers, how is that weird? It’s actually quite normal
Not everyone has to enjoy being naked around others, but it becomes an issue when totally normal body stuff is treated as weird. In a shower, being naked is the default; the more we hide that, the more shame and insecurity we create around something that is just human.
Each to their own then. If someone wants to be naked in a public shower all the power to them, and if someone wants to wear underwear in a public shower, all the power to them and everyone gets on with their own business
Yes. Each their own. But no moves convincing one to behave to the rules of the other.
You mean like forcing us to use public locker rooms instead of individual ones by building all infrastructure this way? Or shaming people like OP does? That sounds like forcing.
But you don't put a camera or window in your shower at home, do you? That's the same as showering in public.
It's not. Showering in your underwear is not only weird, it's also unhygienic.
Is it though? It's a shower, where being naked is normal.
If you're so ashamed of your own body maybe it's a better idea to shower at home.
When you’re alone showering naked is normal, it’s not about being ashamed of your own body, some people just don’t want to be naked around strangers. Does it bother you that much that someone would shower in their underwear at a gym? Are you trying to see something or?
This is a "you" problem, homie
Of course you can. We have a problem when you want others to not shower naked. Then you force a norm onto others, just like those that tell you to shower naked.
The problem is seeing other naked people and showing your body. That's a private thing, it's not meant to be displayed in front of 20 people.
According to who?
Me. I've always felt uncomfortable by the concept and there is absolutely no use for showing your naked body to others. Only risks, like inappropriate looks, gossips, photos etc. Nudity is highly sexual and as such, it needs to be kept in private.
I feel uncomfortable when prudes try to tell me how to live my life. If you can't deal with nude people, why do you make it other peoples problem? Just stay home or move to a more repressive country, don't try to take away others freedoms because of your hangups.
I'm always surprised how the straightest of men insist that other men be naked in front of them. What do you want to see lol?
It is my problem when infrastructure facilitates this behavior.
Being naked in a public shower or a sauna is not displaying. It's just practical. At some point the have to change to wet undies or do they put their pants on over them?
It's displaying because you show it. The practical solution would be to have individual stalls and douches, like we have at home.
That is an opinion. A disputable one. In Afghanistan it had led to male doctors not being allowed to treat female women.
Female women? As opposed to male women?
A doctor needs to see you to help your health. Who the hell needs to see my dick? Or why do I need to see other naked men, because we're still abiding by old school norms and have public locker rooms?
No its not normal…I never heard someone shower with underwear in their home.
Point given, in the privacy of their own home, not around strangers. You also take a shit with the door open at home, why not at the gym too?
You shit with the door open at home?
I’d say a lot of people do when nobody else is home
I realy dont think so haha! But yeah, we differ from opinion and thats oké, I think people should not make being naked weird or something to feel ashamed of, everybody haves a body.
Nice to get that aroma everywhere
Who are you to say what is normal and what isnt? If someone is taking a shower in underwear, what is it to you? How does it change your naked shower?
Isn’t the purpose a shower to clean yourself? How do you clean your body with underwear on? Also it’s extremely unhygienic…
Showering in your underwear is like trying to eat with your mouth closed.
Normal is within normality, in short, what is common. How many people shower in the underwear? I don't think it is a lot, so yeah, normally people shower naked.
But the shower shares the same mentality as the public sauna. If you have underwear in a sauna on a non underwear day, you are the uncommon person, of course people will look at you as some weirdo.
This is why in our countries it's not allowed. There are clothed days and naked days. Otherwise you get in discussions where people of one group want others to behave like them. Very annoying. Especially when religious beliefs are thrown in.
In my local sauna, in The Netherlands, there are no clothed days, ever. It is a nice little sauna with a garden and a swimming pool. The changing room is mixed. I am retired and in the spring/summer/autumn, when the weather is fine, I spend most of my days over there. No phones allowed, they have to stay in your locker. In Summer I spend most of my days naked.
Just like everyone else, men and women, over there. No biggie.
Because being naked is normal, everyone is born naked. I religions and stupid idiologic had made people think there is something wrong to see people naked.
Like it is fine to show people killed/beheaded etc but seeing someone naked is end of the world
Let’s all walk around naked so
Why is that a problem. Retrospect on that. I find it sad that some people are do insecure as to not want to show their body, or look at others. It also makes it easy to associate nudeness with sex. Separating those two makes you better prepared to deal with nudity. Take as extreme example these lndian men that cannot see a lone woman without getting stupid thoughts.
Wouldn’t you wear a bathing suit then?
Porn has made us associate nudity with sex by default. A lot of people can't unlink the two ans nkw you have people who don't care and free ball in a lockerroom and those that shower or swim with underwear on.
Yes. And learning to make a difference is very liberating.
What makes this an interesting topic today is how many people have started to treat any kind of nudity as automatically sexual, even in places where being naked is just practical, like a shower, and maybe it’s time we change that perception back to seeing the naked body as something normal instead of something shameful.
It has to be because of porn culture
We showered naked after sports at school, boys and girls separated. Hated the first time; could not be bothered the next. To me, nudity can be functional, as well as sexual. In a locker room or shower I would be fine with other men being nude, as long it's functional. If I see other men before me getting out of a shower in the nude, I even might do the same.
I'm from a country where people go to the sauna co-ed and naked, also fine, for me a proof that emotionally adult people can separate sexuality and functional nudity.
I think that the influx of different cultures is a partial reason, I also think that the Gen-Z people are a tad more prudish, as they had to live with the risk of camera phones and WhatsApp groups with photos.
I hope it's a wave, and that the next generation will just step out of their trunks and jump in a lake skinny dipping when the weather is hot.
As a foreigner coming to the NL I was kind of shocked how easily people got naked in front of you in the locker rooms. Honestly I kind of admired that since this is the normal thing IMO.
I'm 46 years old, and I notice that things have changed a lot compared to when I was a kid... When I was a kid, most guys had no problem being naked in the locker room, even when coaches or relatives came into the locker room. Today, however, I see guys doing acrobatics to slip their underwear directly under their bathrobes, or some even showering in their underwear... I can't say when things changed, but they definitely have.
My experience it depends on that person and which kind of family that person came from. I'm not sure where it comes tron, but The Netherlands has naked families and non-naked families. Like, I know a friend of mine who easily goes naked to the sauna with mum, dad and sister. Another friend locks the bathroom door when taking a shower.
Being prude is not a problem. Different people have different levels of comfort. What's a problem is when people just other people for being comfortable being nude (or not being comfortable with it). If you're in a locker room, you should be comfortable with other people being naked and you should also respect people not being comfortable being naked.
Agree. Feeling a bit of discomfort is fine. Man yourself and get accustomed. As with the sauna. I never go on the bathing suit days. And still feel a little bit of discomfort. But that is for me to grow in. And no, the third leg has never started growing.
shake it all along with my big bang dong
I mean, life is short.
Schlong?? I always misheard the lyrics.
♫♫ I′ve been watching you
A la la la la schlong
A la la la la schlong long is long long long
Come on!
A la la la la schlong
A la la la la schlong long is long long long ♫♫♫
Hahaha ;-)
I like this, very creative!! Upvoted.
Some people are not comfortable showing off their bodies, especially if they don't have the considered "perfect" body type.
Its a cultural shift coming from more conservative communities.
I've seen men taking a shower in the boxershort. Utterly ridiculous
I’m 21, can’t relate and I wouldn’t care honestly
In my gym’s sauna there’s regularly men who enter with underwear, and some of them even SHOWER in underwear. Although I have to say, they’re mostly not ethnically Dutch.
I was more annoyed with guys who do not shower at all but go straight to the sauna with their rancid pits and poopy butts.
Showering with underwear at football became a thing around the year 2000 in my experience.
In my 25+ years of experience from mostly training in gyms in areas with lots of (first and second generation) immigrants, labor immigrants had a major influence, as most are pretty homophobic. Immigrants that moved here for work came from much more traditional countries, first from Spain and Italy and Greece, later from Morocco and Turkey. Even today those countries are much more prudish and homophobic.
It's my single biggest gripe with labor immigration, that we always invite people from countries that are a lot more conservative or even downright reactionary, and it often takes at least a full generation for them to get a little used to things. Nowadays we have a ton of Poles over, same problem all over again.
I have friends from all these groups, and they are often shocked by how casual we (multi-generation Dutchies) are about nudity. "Are you not afraid of gays?" is a question I have been asked way too often. The homophobia even rubs off on progressive people like me, in the sense that it is uncomfortable to be naked around guys that are homophobic; it creates tension that we rather avoid, making us more prudish.
You just overheard some guy. Not everything is "Dutch culture".
Well people are entitled to their opinion that doesn’t mean you can’t hang your thing in the locker room. Its as easy as saying I hate eggs but that wont stop people from eating it.
It's really something only the young generations are bothered by as well. I go to a gym where there are relatively more older men in the locker room and they do not give a shit about nudity. Probably not suffering from social media infused body standards I would guess.
https://www.reddit.com/r/nudism/comments/1p25yxz/is_nudity_in_locker_rooms_really_disappearing/
A long time ago already. In my teenage years it was normal to tan topless, showering naked after gym was normal, sex was something we spoke about, not something that was a taboo, but that period seems ages ago
Smartphone cameras.
I got the same in a women's changing room at the gym, a few times on different days. I always take off my bra after a workout so my tiddies are out for a while until I pack and leave, and more than once I've seen teenagers gasping and covering their face, as if I was flashing them. And same thing when I get out of the shower and I'm drying with a towel. They are visibly very tense and even leave the changing room quickly sometimes. It's mostly teenagers. I mean, can you blame them? I was also insecure when I was younger, and it took me years to be confident when naked and around other naked people. And to be honest, being around naked people helped me distinguish between normal bodies and what social media was pushing.
True young people are worse in that. .
And what if we're all men? I find the concept of being naked in front of strangers unnatural and wrong. I've never done it. Not just strangers, practically anyone who isn't your partner, and even then, I'd find it weird if they're just spending time at home naked. I don't understand why locker rooms aren't designed in a way that you can be completely secluded from others. I don't mind waiting for 15 minutes in that case.
But why? We're all just animals after all. It's all just body parts.
So why don't you open the door of the public toilet or put naked pictures of yourself online? Because decency implies that some things are a taboo.
Are you like 13 or something? It’s a taboo because religious people (who don’t have the best track record being great critical thinkers) said it was taboo. Being naked does not equal sex. It’s not perverse.
By the way, my boyfriend and I spend hours at home naked with each other. It’s not like I don’t already know what he has going on…I urge you to live a more joyous life. It doesn’t have to involve sexually intruding on strangers because being nude is natural and you’re just prudish
Well said! Thank you ;-)
Gross. Being nude can be natural in an Amazon tribe only.
What do you think makes you different from someone in an Amazon tribe physically? Your money? Your country? Nothing is fundamentally different. Same human species.
Money, values and culture.
Chill with the rage bait
I'm telling you the truth. If you think you're the same as Amazon tribes, good for you lol.
If you don’t get my point by now and you are actually being serious then this conversation is going to go no where. I find you fundamentally stupid but it’s not a problem…agree to disagree
Who says I don't? Who gives a shit? Decency is a made up concept.
My older colleague got naked in front of me after a work sport event, I didn't want to be around that.
I also go to the spa often and I'm nude in front of complete strangers.
I'm fine that I'm fine with both of these things, as a bloke in my mid thirties.
In the "old days" there were no phones that could take a picture of you naked and make it visible for the whole world within seconds?...
Ageed its stupid, especially when you visit saunas regularly (like myself)
Kleine lul energy bruv
You're extrapolating too much. It's still ok. Different people have different opinions.
It has become more prudish on average I think, unfortunately, but it's not like the majority thinks it's not ok.
Its quite paradoxal that social media is become more nude, and the locker room becomes less nude. Hmmm….
terrible, yet more whats wrong with the 'younger' kids today
Part immigration, part younger generations simply being more prudish (and lacking the skill to appreciate humour, but that´s another story).
I second that guy. Getting naked is fine, but you can be very discrete about it. If you want to flaunt your dick around, sorry to say, nobody wants to look at that. You are free to be naked at your own home 24/7 though.
“Flaunt your dick around”? Jeez im taking a shower, im not giving a striptease. Why so prudish?
My point still stands. Getting naked is fine. How do you do it is what matters. There are people who love to be naked in locker room and there are people who are temporarily naked just to go to shower or to change clothes. Second is completely fine, but there are a lot of people in first category which are quite annoying.
How are you going to prepare for a shower in the men's locker room? Take away underwear and quickly wear a towel? It is a locker room, people are expected here to be naked. I personally don't shower in the locker room, so I don't get naked, but I also don't try to look at others when they are naked because I am a cultured person. I don't need to see what other men have in their private area. If I happen to see it, this is not on them, this just happens.
It’s not about “flaunting it around strangers”, it’s literally just about using a shower the way it’s meant to be used. Nobody’s asking to turn it into a show, just to not treat a naked body in a shower like something shocking or inappropriate.
The fact that simple, non-sexual nudity already makes people this uncomfortable says more about how oversexualized we’ve made the human body than about the situation itself.
Well context is important in here and everyone is jumping to conclusions. If guy is naked and discrete, sure. But there are also often guys who spend more time naked than not while simply changing clothes as well.
Because seeing other people naked is weird. Not everything needs to be seen as normal
Thus his question about this generation being more prude. there is nothing weird in a locker room to change and be naked. if you don’t think it’s normal, fair that’s your opinion but then change at home or find a locked cabin.
You're not a prude for not wanting to see other men's penises and butts
ahah, ahah, ahahahah That’s literally the definition of “Prude”… If you don’t know a word, look for its definition before sharing nonsense online.
btw, I saved you some extra work, here is a definition:
Prude (British English)
(pruːd )
noun
a person who affects or shows an excessively modest, prim, or proper attitude, esp regarding sex
Then don't google them... Duh...
No... I bet you never went to any sauna or wellness center ever? You also must not have younger nieces or cousins or brothers or sisters... Kids run around naked all the time. It is not weird. Needless to say, only if you sexualize it. The problem is not with naked people, it is with the sexualization of naked people. Context matters too. Naked people on the streets in the city is weird, and should not be normalized. Naked people in places like dressing rooms, sauna's, nude beaches or whatever... Normal.
As a matter of fact sexualizing people in a non sexual context is weird. Not people being naked. Hell, unless you are one of the very few non-porn watching people on the planet... YOU LOOK AT NAKED PEOPLE... Context matters. Pointing out hypocrisy too.
As someone else said, it goes in waves. One generation is prude, the next one isn't. Also, there's a lot of religious influence, both through American media and migration, that makes people become prude. And lastly, with the introduction of mobile phones with cameras, I get that people are more prude than before, because you never know if someone is recording you or not.
As an American, you can blame us for a lot.
This isn't one of those things
You mean the extremely tight restrictions on nudity in American tv shows and on social media have nothing to do with the consumers of that media becoming more prude?
On the one hand, I hear you in general, on the other hand, the last couple decades have seen liberalization in terms of nudity in media.
In terms of fucking gym showers? Nah, this isn't on us.
I wouldn't say there's been liberalization in terms of nudity in media. It wasn't unusual to see bare breasts or genitals (covered in tons of pubic hair) in movies in the 70s or 80s, or even the 90s. Nowadays it's almost unthinkable to show the outline of a nipple in movies rated R.
Because you like walking around with your hairy balls hanging for the world to see doesn’t mean others have to like that
Then never use a locker room and avoid the normalcy of what happens in a locker room…
This thread feels like a fever dream of talking to prude Victorian children
Hope you told him if you feel so strongly about it
Mobile phones and Social media. that is my guess.
Of course it's a men complaining about people having boundaries.
So you heard a 20yo random dude saying something stupid. That has never happened in the history of mankind. Congratulations for your discovery
Well, this is not about that standalone remark of that young dude but more about the overall attitude of young adults..... which I notice too, they become prudish.
Sounds like something a guy with a micro penis would say. Let's not get carried away and think everyone has become prudish
Let me guess, he was not white?
He was white blonde an dutch actually
Then I'm surprised. Dutchies are generally almost as liberated about being naked in saunas and gyms as Finns, which is saying a lot. The only people I've seen change in toilets and wear underwear to shower (really) have been Middle-Eastern and north African. And I spend a lot of time in gyms of various types.
American influence? Or maybe that is just one guy who may or may not have issues.
