Ulughbegsaurus (meaning "Ulugh Beg's lizard") is an extinct genus of carcharodontosaurid theropod dinosaurs from the Late Cretaceous Bissekty Formation (Turonian age) and Khodzhakul Formation (Cenomanian age) of Uzbekistan. The genus contains a single species, Ulughbegsaurus uzbekistanensis, known from multiple maxilla fragments.

  • A Turonian Carcharosontosaurid... Probably one of the last of his kind, it's insane how they just went extinct at the end of the Turonian.

My guess is that a smaller size saved it considering by the standard of its family it was fairly small. Still an apex predator but no mapusaurus or giganotosaurus.

For context, also I didn’t know of Ulughbegsaurus tbh, it roughly estimated to have 7.5-8 m in length and weigh over 1000 kg apparently. That’s real small compared to Giganotosaurus, Carcharodontosaurus and Mapusaurus which all are typically thought to have comfortably exceed 12 m and outweigh Ulughbegsaurus at least 7-8 times over.

  • Interesting 👍🏻

  • Correct me if I am wrong Wasn't the last charchardonotosaurus shaochilong and chilaitaisaurus

  • One thing to keep in mind that it's just a small fragment of the skull and some say it could actually belong to a giant dromaeosaur.

    Probably not though

I vaguely remember reading that there is both confirmed giant dromaeosaur material and confirmed but not named carcharodontosaur material. So it's probably gonna be still a carcharodontosaur.
