Check out the Oceans episode of 'A Perfect Planet' for the source of the video and credit.

ā€œAn Eden's whale trap feeding in the Gulf of Thailand. This extraordinary behaviour (where the whale treads water!) is thought to have developed because pollution has made the Gulf of Thailand a hypoxic environment. Sewage outflows from the land have caused all the oxygen in the water to be used up, except at the surface. This means the whale's fish prey can only live in this surface layer. By treading water and keeping the corners of their mouth below the surface, a flow is created pulling the fish into the whale's mouth. In the panic, some of the fish also seem to jump out the water and into the whale's mouth.ā€

If we ever speak to them we better be prepared if their first words are , "why did you kill everything?"

Whales have long memories, we absolutely decimated them carelessly and wantonly. If they have any collective memories transferred by language, it is of a vibrant sea, packed to the brim with life and whale song.

Sorry I was reading some ecological reports and right now I'm hoping aliens wipe us out so the rest of this beautiful garden world can recover from us.

Sad fact--the weeks following 9/11 were among the happiest days whales have had in decades.

Ecologists tracking whale songs noticed there was a massive uptick in activity following the event. Whales have extremely good hearing but consequently are very sensitive to noise. After 9/11, planes were grounded for a while and air traffic was heavily down. It's extremely likely that the air traffic noise hurts them, but for a brief period, the noise was gone. They sang.

    parent root

Even if they are smart they may not attribute the changes in their ecosystem to us. They might, but it could also be akin to expecting primitive humans to inherently understand climate change and its causes. They’d see the effects but not necessarily connect the dots.

Lol what if they don’t kill us because they think we’re gods. Our collective ego doesn’t need that.

Imagine when we crack translation and it completely dispels their sense of mystery surrounding us in a ā€œdon’t meet your heroesā€-esc manner. The whales are like ā€œwait- they suckā€¦ā€ and suddenly orcas are attacking all our boats and eating beach goers and shit.

    parent root

Another real cool thing whales did was communicate to others how to escape Whale hunters. This is back when ships were powered by sales, the whales were managed to escape the sailing ships figured out that the ships couldn't travel against the wind. And in the meticulous ship logs from the captains it was noted when a whale escaped, and every subsequent encounter with different whales resulting in those whales escaping as well. That's because the initial whales that escaped were then going around telling other whales that those ships are filled with 'sharp pointy fangs' at this swim away from them going upwind.

    parent root
    2 points Ulvaer

Right, but "is typical of reddit" and "is exclusive to reddit" are two different qualities. In any case, I'm not talking specifically about anthropomorphising animal behaviour, I'm talking about not caring very much about the factuality of things. Which, again, isn't exclusive to reddit but is still very much typical of reddit.

It really is extremely sad to read just how badly that we are destroying the planet, and especially making it nearly uninhabitable for so many animals. But on the flipside, it's pretty awesome that they are smart enough to adapt and continue to survive. I just wish they didn't have to.

I was in Thailand about 8 years ago. Went snorkeling in a few spots.

First, the snorkeling in Thailand is freaking amazing. Beautiful reefs, fish, the works. Beautiful country and nice people.

Second, the sewage outflow problem is a problem. We stayed at one resort and less than a quarter mile away was the stinkiest, dirtiest, blackest, river I've ever seen in my life. Just flowing right out into the ocean. You could tell it was sewage, it just had that smell. We didn't swim anywhere near that spot but it's left a lingering memory...

    parent root

My neighborhood in San Diego is several miles from the sewage outlet of Tijuana Mexico. We still have days the city marks as unsafe to swim in the ocean due to the waste levels being too high. parent root
    3 points zenfish

I've read books from the 70s-80s that described trap feeding behavior, but it was outlining the ingenuity of whales. So these whales have baleen which they use to basically sieve the water for krill and small fish. However, just like us, sometimes they developed ways to feed more efficiently like "bubble nets" to herd all the krill/fish together then run through it with baleen. Back then, I never saw this kind of trap feeding behavior described but it makes sense. The ocean is deoxygenating and we've lost like 90% of krill in the last 100 years.

The process responsible is eutrophication: farm runoff pollution causes massive algal blooms that then trigger bacteria in the lower levels as these blooms sink to feed and multiply, eating up all the oxygen. So all the levels below surface are completely deoxygenated and lifeless leaving a tiny top layer. Basically, like in movies where the protagonists are trapped in an underwater cave or a boat, sipping at a tiny air pocket to stay alive - except with food since whales have to surface to breathe anyway.

The overarching phenomenon is called ocean suffocation. The dead water also migrates out from the coasts too. So we keep going the way we go at some point the ocean will just be devoid of life unless we run out of minerals for fertilizers and then our global civilization collapses anyway, which might happen first. Six on one hand, half a dozen on the other.

    parent root
    7 points Im_On_Reddit_At_Work

Polutted waters means less oxygen down below so fish can only survive in the surface layer. Whale creates a flow that pulls anything near it into its mouth by keeping it just below the surface, thus pulling and trapping the fishes. They don't go in willingly, there is no bait.

    parent root
    8 points redditAPsucks

Apparently its cuz that body of water is so polluted fish only live near the surface

    parent
    107 points walmarttshirt

Yeah they just spit them out. They can’t swallow big stuff and know pretty quickly.

There’s a video on Reddit somewhere of this happening.

    parent root
    117 points mnemy

Yes, but their jaw may injure limbs, and they may start diving before they push you out. And they descend far faster than humans can handle, pressure wise.

So yeah, they'll spit you out, but you may be fucked anyway.

    parent root
    24 points BlueberryAny6827

Would the unfortunate human be aware of the increase in water pressure while inside the whale, or would they just get spat out into a suddenly super pressurized zone?

    parent root
    45 points frichyv2

You would notice the pressure difference while inside the whale because the whale is being compressed as well. Although you likely aren't worried about the pressure so much as the air. You will be too far down to swim back up long before you are so far down you are crushed.

    parent root
    18 points nestaa13

Im scared. And I should be.

    parent root

I'm not sure this is entirely true. An old friend of mine was swallowed by a whale along with his dad. It took them a while to hunt around for detritus and light a bonfire so they could escape. I'll have to remember his name so I can ask him, I do remember he had a big nose though.

    parent root
    19 points RAZOR_WIRE

Blue and Humpbacks I believe have a throat the about the size of a dinner plate.

    parent root
    17 points jaavuori24

Which is crazy because I have seen a blue whale skeleton and it took like 45 seconds to walk the length of. It's on display hanging from the ceiling at the natural history Museum at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

    parent root
    8 points Unicorncorn21

Well it makes sense when you consider it from the perspective that it wouldn't probably be worth it for them to try digesting anything bigger than the circumference of a dinner plate. For example any decently big predatory fish could cause all kinds of damage inside a whale before it would die in there.

Not a biologist but just guessing

    parent root
    4 points frichyv2

So many animals just swallow their prey whole and alive, makes you wonder how many fight their way out.

    parent root

So jonah was never swallowed by a whale? I knew Bible was bullshit.

    parent root
    7 points SophisticPenguin

Bible says Jonah was swallowed by a "great fish". Other than that, sperm whales which eat giant squid have a larger throat.

A large enough marine animal that could swallow a person isn't the biggest hurdle for that story.

I don't think any whales feed on actual plankton. Baleen whales feed on small animals like these sardines when in the tropics and krill, which are like shrimp, when in Arctic/Antarctic waters.

    parent root
    19 points RepresentativeAge444

    They do.

Many large baleen whales eat plankton, including blue whales, humpback whales, and right whales. These whales are filter feeders, meaning they take in huge volumes of water and use their baleen plates to strain out small organisms like zooplankton and tiny crustaceans (krill). Other whales, like sei whales, feed on plankton at different times of day, such as at night

    parent root
    5 points webbitor

They do. Many small animals are classified as plankton, as long as they are "free-floating or weakly swimming".

    parent root
    2 points neityght

No you just haven't listened in science class

    parent root
    3 points crazy_urn

There are two primary categories of whales, separated by how they eat. What you are referring to as eating plankton are called baleen whales. They are filter feeders that eat small animals like plankton. The other category are toothed whales, like Orcas and Sperm whales, which eat fish, squid, and seals, depending on the species.

    https://www.nps.gov/redw/learn/nature/toothed-vs-baleen-whales.htm

    parent root
    9 points vorpalrobot

There is another comment that explains it but the whale is paddling treading water and the flow is pulling them into the mouth area.

    parent root
    4 points Visual_Collar_8893

Schooling fish seek their own group for safety. There is generally safety in numbers. In this case, being close to the school is the exception.

    parent root

    Just like humans

    parent root
    3 points PeachyFairyFox

Fish tend to enjoy hovering just beneath dark shapes on top of water like boats. In this case the whale creates a current that pulls the fish in. Additionally, in this particular water, it's so polluted that the fish must be near the surface to breath.

My god the other guy wasn't kidding, I'd follow your posts specifically. (Also great song choice! You could also have chosen flying whales šŸ™‚)

Man couldn’t wipe the smile off my face hearing Gojira on a whale video! The only thing missing is the following link:

I thought you were exaggerating. You weren’t. Like… I’m learning a lot of really cool things while also getting jump scares and feeling kinda anxious.

So I have this question, how damn fast do fishes reproduce? Between the large scale human fishing practices and animals that can literally eat tens of them at once they truly need to reproduce and grow insanely fast don’t they?

If you're going to put it to a Gojira song, why not Flying Whales?

Whale is clearly swimming, not flying

If your an alien and come in you see these naked mole rat species making somewhat advancements beyond typical species you encounter.

You see these large ass whales sticking there heads out of the water eating thousands of fish

You see a bear eat a deer as it’s alive knawing on its rear leg

You see some of the naked mole rats at anytime in the world fighting and killing one another

You label this bitch a hostile planet full of species killing and eating one another and keep drones to watch it to make sure the naked mole rats don’t make it out of here and destroy themselves before becoming space faring dangerous mole rats or tip the scales so they never make it out of here

Cause this planet from a outside view in is prbly pretty fucking gnarly lol

Seeing how many herbivorous species have evolved from carnivorous ancestor, and how many carnivorous species have evolved from herbivorous ancestors on our planet, I can't imagine a world in which life would evolve any differently.

If anything, I'm surprised we don't have more dangerous species around. And it seems that we used to, but us humans killed them one by one (voluntarily during hunt or because we killed their preys).
