Doing the lords work for killing that mosquito larva
at first i was like poor lil fisher thing
now im like fuck that guy
That's really cool! How does it breath?
There are special hairs on its abdomen that allow it create a air bubble to allow them to breathe. You can actually see it in the video!
I have a hairy belly, wonder if that will work for me?🧐
Only one way to find out
Does the air bubble help with my swim shirt on? That’s how I swim due to my hairs belly.
so you could say.. it’s a hair bubble?
Underrated
Trap surface air actually. They surface every so often and when they dive back the bubbles of air get trapped in their bristles until they get released in their web diving bell.
A legit scuba diver
That's where it gets really interesting. It actually builds a diving bell with silk and fills it with air from the surface.
Here is the whole process
Oh great, now we have SCUBA spiders
If it makes you feel any better they only live in fresh water.
No, that doesn’t really make me feel any better
Relax, they've adapted so that they usually just live in drinking-water towers. /s
This is awesome. Thanks! What miraculous little butts they have.
Yes they are very magical butts
Spiders are crazy. Like ants and bees they have some weird type of cognition that we do not understand at all.
There's a spider pokemon evolution line (dewpider)/araquanid)) typed water/bug based on these.
I really love them
Yet there's still not a possum, is there?
Bubble butt
no but actually that's really cool.
Spawn killing mosquitoes
Doing the Lord's work
"The diving bell is a structure unique to this spider which acts as an external physical gill. Physical gills are structural adaptions that are present on a few aquatic arthropods which allow them to stay submerged for long periods of time." [ed: punctuation] [from student paper: The underwater life of Argyroneta aquatica by Joel Kaminski BIOL/WATR 361, Spring 2015]
"That's not a spi-- oh, that's a spider..."
Even taking care of a future mosquito, thanks spood!
I suppose he has to come up for air or does he carry an air bubble for oxygen? 🤔
Yeah he has to come up for air AND he carries a bubble for oxygen. He also builds a little nest underwater that he fills with air from the surface.
How interesting.
Where's the glowing red eyes?
Insects dont have lungs so they dont breathe like most animals. They absorb oxygen directly through their carapace so just having that bubble around its abdomen is how its getting its oxygen.
Spiders actually have book lungs at the base of their abdomen.
Fml. Yeah spiders arent insects. Lol
But in the war they will side with the insects.
Unless we domesticate jumpers first!
Children of Time?
I mean I didnt reference that but im just about to read it, what a coincidence!! Now im even more interested
Insects also dont breathe through their skin, they have trachea, small tubes extending through their bodies
Small tubes from their skin or carapace that funnels air to trachea....
Fml ?
Skibidi rizz
It looks like a dragonfly larva, its meal...
Mosquito.
Okay. Much smaller, then. :)
Yeah this reminds me of when I cleaned pools in my younger years and I’d turn off the pump and just see a dozen spiders chilling in the bottom of the filter basket.. take it out and they go scurrying up my hand. Fuck that shit. 👎
What?!?!?! Nooooo
True story
Can you keep them in an aquarium?
Absolutely
Thank you for sharing. I had no idea that spiders could dive.
That's no problem. Yeah diving bell spiders are certainly quite unique.
This is how sea spiders are created... a reverse engineered crab??
The Pokémon Araquanid is based directly on the diving bell spider which is pretty dang cool
For almost the entire duration of the clip, I had no clue why it's called a Diving Bell spider... the very last 2s told me why
Great video, OP! I've enjoyed all your videos!
I recall reading that you film in a garage in the UK, but I'm curious, where do you get your insect specimens?
Thanks for watching! You can actually get quite a lot of them in the pet trade. People keep all sorts of interesting invertebrates.
Amazing
Thanks!
Why do I want to pop that bubble?
Pls don't. They're hard at work
I don’t think it will pop underwater. That’s like saying you are going to pop a raindrop.
Cool. Let them fuckin stay there. Spiders creep me out.
That’s terrifying. I can’t feel safe anywhere.
Nope
