Bird murmurations work like wave patterns. Each bird reacts to about 7 nearby birds. If the flock gets too rigid, it breaks apart. If it’s too chaotic, it falls apart. But when they balance order and randomness, the whole flock flows together in perfect, shifting harmony.
That is mesmerizing and so beautiful. Thanks for sharing this.
They are a screensaver for our sky.
Before the passenger pigeon went extinct (we killed them) they used to block out the sun doing this. I think about how amazing it must have been to see a flock of millions.
Speak for yourself. I didn't kill them
No but your grandparents did happily
For sport and also for dinner.
Yep. Extinction is something we have only really started to understand in the last century. The people were encouraged to get rid of them to protect their crops.
Imagine being one of the first humans to see this
So like 80 years ago when birds were first invented?
Yeah, it must have been wild!
Santa called. Time to return to the pole.
I’d post it right away
im not the first human to see this at all, but its not like people were warning me about it so first time i saw this i was in complete awe
Birds were here long before us.
He's talking about the fake remote controlled ones the government created 80 years ago after the great bird extinction in 1940.
That moment would be the same as this moment. Question/thought. Why do they do that?
It's a technique primarily for use against predators.
It can confuse predators as well as working as "strength in numbers" (dilution), and shows near instantaneous information sharing (they can signal to others where the predator is)
They were once dozens of times this size. There are old recordings of them.
There are still much larger ones than this.
I used to wonder how “flock of birds” was often cited as a UFO sighting . Like how can a bird look like a space ship.
Then I was driving and I saw a perfect disk flying in the air and poof it was gone! I pulled over and finally saw the birds doing their thing :)
"beyond the busy of human life" is a beautifully put together string of words.
It is the true true
You just realise how damn close Nature is to you if you stop for once and look, right? Insane.
This looks like those old computer screen savers
Obviously government bird drones
If it flies, it spies.
One of my favorite songs is about murmurations.
Shape shifter.
Thousands in the air.
Moving as one.
Magic flocks the reaches.
I'm speechless on the ground.
Black blizzard round a cold grey sun.

Do we know why they do it?
As a self-proclaimed amateur ornithologist, murmurations give me the strangest raging hard on
This is beautiful! Thank you for not putting shitty music in
reminds me of the scene in True Detective S1 when Rust Cohle is watching the birds
I remember in the 90s there were massive waves of birds like this just before winter and they would line up in the power lines when resting before flying elsewhere
So cool! Where did you get to witness this?!
Wow!!
Could easily be confused for a life form
Wow!
Is this in the Bay Area?
Mesmerizing to watch.
Dynamic airborne fingerprints
A beautiful birds playing above life’s busyness.
We go about hustle and bustle, and so do they 😍
so cool 🔥
This is just how the sky looks all the time for me. Thanks, eye floaters...
Screensaver
Busy of bird life?
It really is mesmerizing to watch. The phrase "beyond the busy of human life" perfectly captures that feeling of awe.
“…most of the time I was convinced I’d lost it. There are other times I thought I was mainlining the secret truth of the universe.”
I got something in my eye.
They do this because there's a predatory hawk in their midst.
I love this
Breathtaking...
The mind flayer?
Really, I'm enjoying seeing the murmuration of birds,
Looks like an ink blot test
So beautiful
What is the background song?
When the eraser just smudges the paper.
Incredible!
Screw UFOs, this is way cooler
The shrooms just kicked in!
It really is a shame that birds aren’t real and you just found this glitch in the matrix
Chiral Creatures
The car noises are ruining this scene.
