Hello! I am still learning to be a natural and have been for a few years. I'm encountering a new issue: a thinning part. I always part in the middle and people online say I should switch it up, but I'm not sure what to do. It's so easy to detangle in four sections and set up my grid that way---it's very intuitive. Do y'all have any ideas?

  • Switch it up but doesn’t have to be drastic. Can go couple of millimetres here and there. That’s what I do

(And get your vitamin levels checked!)

Vitamins are good! No low D or iron

So, like, have it be a little off-center? Wouldn't it look funny?

Not really. I’m literally talking like a tiny bit to left or right. Less than a centimetre. To still have centre part but give that bit a bit of a break. I do this all the time

That's smart. I'll have to try that next wash day. Right now it's parted down the middle so, before I wash this week, I'll part it dry a little to the left and wash it like that!

  • Not thinning, that’s just your part. My hair is like that too, for some reason the front of my head is more fuller than the crown

Huh, that's a little reassuring. I was legit asking everyone if I'm balding lol. It might still be good to change it up a bit...

  • I still section with middle part but don’t always style that way. When you’re done detangling, drying, or whatever your pre-style last step is, do a side part to style.

Forgive me for being dumb, but how would that work? Like, I side part my hair sometimes, but how would that work with a style?

Not dumb. I may be misunderstanding the question lol How do you typically wear your hair? I wear braid outs usually so I section my hair in 4 or 6 even parts for the wash, condition, and blow dry. Then when I’m ready to put the braids in I switch to a side part in the front so that when I take the braids out there’s hair to one side and I wear it that way a week or so. Then next wash day, I switch to a middle part. Next wash day back to the side. So forth and so on. That way my hair isn’t always in a middle part, though it is my favorite.

It's very cold and dry where I live now, so I actually just learned how to do braids. I used to do twists. What I do now is section in four and wash, condition, detangle, and add leave-in all in the shower. I don't dry my hair. I braid my hair in eight sections while damp with grease. I take it out after 3-4 days.

But what I do is divide my four sections in half to make eight all around. Where do you position your sections for a side part?

Ok not drying is fine too! I put my braids in from back to front so once I get to the front two sections, I change the part then. Just on the left or right (whichever way you’d prefer your hair to fall). But I do scalp braids in the front to really not have a middle part. So let’s say when you split one of the front sections in half, part front to back and let that be your side part. Then braid the rest of the front in the opposite direction. I hope that makes sense.

Thank you so much!!! Got some natural brown highlights ;D
