Hey y’all! I have fine hair. The top part of my hair tends to be more fine yet dense, whereas the area around my ears and down to my neck is VERY low density and fine. I’m not including my curl pattern because I don’t want my post deleted and I really could use the advice haha. Anyways, I’m currently trying to determine if the thinness at the back of my head is actually because of 1). Consistently pulling my hair back, and 2). Some health problems I had a couple years ago. FWIW, I’m considering seeing a black dermatologist for this.

For now, my question is, what braiding styles can I do? What works best for fine, low density hair? I had medium knotless braids 2 years ago and left in them for about 3 weeks. My hair seemed to have done fine, despite the massive amount of braiding hair put in. I didn’t get them again until just this Friday but had to take them out because she pretty much scalped me and I found a few tension bumps lol. It was legit painful. Is it more of a matter or just finding a braider that prioritizes hair health? Do you find certain braiding styles are less damaging than others? Is investing in human hair a better investment for hair health? I really love braids, I love the look of them, I love how I feel in them, but these braids I got on Friday scared the hell out of me. I don’t wanna give up braids, so I’m wondering if there’s a middle ground or adjustments that can be made so that I can experiment without majorly compromising my hair health. I never got to experience having my hair done as a child, and so being an adult now with the option to do my hair, I’m wanting to experiment with different styles that I didn‘t have the chance to do growing up, and be able to express myself. Two strand twists and such aren’t really an option because I just look bald as HELL at the back area and it just doesn’t look good lol.

I would love to hear from others with fine, low density hair to tell me what has and hasn‘t worked for them, favorite braided styles, tips, etc. I really appreciate it y’all for listening.

  • Invest in human hair for braiding. It’s expensive. Check out ywigs. Find a Braider who’s talented and doesn’t pull. They may recommend crochet pieces to add fullness to “boneless” braids that you should be wearing. Rod sets can also make hair look fuller once separated and give your hair a break. You can wear braids or twists under a removable wig. Too much tension on fine hair will have you bald.

I appreciate the response! Thank you!
