• Seems like it’s the same headline all off-season just reworded

This time they added the word "sizable", very exciting stuff

BREAKING NEWS: Yankees set to offer Cody Bellinger a perfectly cromulent offer. More news to follow.

REPORT: Belli will not settle for less than a “Scrum-dittily-umptious” amount, according to his excellency Mr. Boras.

He needs the offer to be embiggened.

I love when Redditors drop words , like "Cromulent". It always makes me smile to see we all haven't succumbed to, basic.

I believe it never hurts to embiggen your vocabulary.

I'm not the kind of person to say atoadaso but embiggening word knowing is super important but I still don't have the hank of it

    Tomorrow it will be substantial

i believe i’ve read a similar message this winter with different verbiage

We’ve gotten “ongoing dialogue”, “nothing imminent”, “gap”, “sizable gap”, “marriage unlikely”, and “there’s an impasse” all within the same week talking about the same 3 players lol

almost makes you miss Scott Boras’ poetry

THAT WAS A JOKE, SCOTT! SHUT YOUR MOUTH!!!

feels like we’re begging the mets/another team to overpay for him

    Clicked to say exactly that!

He's just reiterating the Jack Curry info we got yesterday.

  • Truly not worth getting worked up over imo

Boras is going to drag it out on the chance that a team gets desperate and meets the demands. The Yankees seemingly are the only team seriously in on Belli, I still think they get it done

I’d be willing to give up Belli if it meant we stopped working with Boras

Find other options. Sick and tired of this guy

I always find it funny how people get so worked up over Boras being an objectively great agent.

He does his job very well, and it mashes no difference if Belli signs now or in a month from now

I get the frustration as a fan, but if I were a player? Oh, a Boras client I would be

Eh idk. He seems like he has screwed over some of his players the last few seasons getting way too greedy and not having a good handle on the market. Eventually some of his players have had to settle for short term deals

Is it screwing over though? Alonso effectively did very well, and bregman is likely going to fall into the same boat. Bellinger too, if I had to guess.

The pillow contracts do depend on them doing it and balling out, but no one was lining up to pay Pete $150/5 last year. If you combine that with his Mets contract, it’s essentially $180/6. Was he going to get that in FA last year? Not even close.

you’re right. the thing that makes it feel problematic is that he represents such an outsized percentage of the market that both sides are going to make decisions that might benefit their market if not their individual player or team. the players put a lot of trust in boras; they have a lot more to lose on each deal than he does.

They certainly do. Personally I think he does very well with “stars”, or what you might consider a top 50 ish player in the game. Usually those guys make sense to teams. He does drag things out, he’s trying to get every penny.

The bigger problem (if you deem it so), is when he tries to stretch the next level of guys into that class. Cody bellinger coming off his first good year in 4 years (2023-2024 offseason), that kind of thing.

I think if you pay enough attention to boras you can realize the tactics. Whether the reported ask of $300M is true or not for bellinger, he always starts ridiculously high, and then eventually comes down to a very reasonable spot, usually what the contract prediction were at the start of the offseason. It’s all tactics.

I think there is a misconception about teams willingness to pay as well. If a team had an offer out to bellinger to pay him ~$30M for 6 years, I bet he would sign that today. But teams (Yankees included) try to drag their feet, offer 4 or 5 years. Probably less AAV. As much as boras is at fault for dragging offseasons on, teams are just as much to blame. You see when a team meets the FA price, it happens almost immediately. Like cease as a good example.

    They aren’t settling really

They take short term deals which allows them to shed the QO and enter the market fully unrestricted while still having the security to opt in should they absolutely shit the bed (like Monty did)

Bregman, Alonso and Belli are all going to cash in on huge deals now because they were able to use these short term deal to make above market value and re-enter the market fully unrestricted

Eh, those are all easy guys to score big contracts with. If he was really a good agent he could get my Airbud 15: Barbershop Quartet script into production.

bellinger being a guy who did it like 3 times

He works on commissions, screwing one of his clients screws himself... Sometimes things don't work out. I don't like the guy, but to even just call him highly competent is an understatement.

I think it is time the Yankees worked around Boras. If talks drag on, start making other significant signings. We already have four good outfielders, so if it drags on, sign Bichette. Sign or trade for a decent pitcher and let the young players develop and probe themselve. Maybe it's time to give Dominguez and Jones a real chance. If Belli is holding out for the last dollar, then retool in a different way

He screwed Jordan Montgomery over having him sign super late after overestimating his market

Boras didn't screw Monty, Monty screwed Monty by overvaluing himself. He wanted ace level money when he was a #3 starter coming off a career year.

I have said this a bunch on Reddit but I wholeheartedly disagree with this

Monty got paid above market value for his ability and fucked himself over by pitching like dogshit.

He just blamed Boras for his own failings

For the majority of his clients he does get maximum dollar. But also a higher risk of getting burned for some of them compared with other agents. Since he makes a percentage on the whole lot burning one of two doesn’t affect his bottom line.

He attracts the type of client who care about money over all else which is why if I was a team owner I would prefer not to work with him or with his clients. We are talking about generational wealth so a few extra million really doesn’t make a difference other than for comparison/ego purposes.

As a fan just sick of his drawn out process and little lies. Think his style is not good for the game overall.

Great for high end players, but awful for fans.

Like for Soto and Cole caliber players his schtick works well, but for the Imais, Alonsos, and Bregmans, he's a mixed bag depending on the strength of the offseason. Sometimes he's able to get them the bag their chasing, others it turns into them having to take a short pillow deal to try again next year after their market collapsed.

This in turn leads to an awful experience for the fans. Because they want the excitement of the offseason to be a constant thing, not something that only happens in the last few days of the offseason because a bunch of big stars who are Boras clients kept holding out.

His job is to get the players paid and be their public advocate. If he wasn't successful, the players wouldn't join his agency. Boras has no responsibility to help the Yankees keep more of their money or maintain a budget at their preferred level. Spring Training is still over a month away, so there's no hurry to cave to anyone's demands on either side if they feel fair market value of the player's services haven't been met. All the stuff he does with the media is just fluff that can be easily ignored. The only thing I don't like is when he tries to take influence with the union leadership which could be anti-competitive for other agents.

im sure cashman has the same mindset. here’s our contract number, if you want more find it in the market

Whoever loses out on Tucker may jump in once he signs

Let them. Bellinger isn't worth getting into a bidding war over.

  • DONT ADD YEARS. HOLD FIRM. CALL THEIR BLUFF

Mets would have signed him by now if the competition for him was serious.

    HOLD THE LINE

    • 🎸🎸🎸 *

    Love isn't always on time

Until we hear news that some other team has an offer that is closer to what Belli wants, then I’m not sure why we need to keep hearing about the gap between him and the Yankees.

Correct. Cashman fell into the same trap with Rodon of bidding against themselves. We know Bellinger wants to be a Yankee, make him a fair offer, take it or leave it

  • Belli is looking for a Soto-era contract, but with a potential lockout looming I just don't see it happening.

Belli should probably get an absolute max of like 5/150, but he seems to be looking for something closer to 7/210, which he just isn't going to get.

Consider that Toronto just paid Springer $25m for essentially the same 5ish WAR 2025 that Bellinger turned in, but he did it at age 35, in the 5th year of his 6 year deal. Call the $5m AAV increase on a 5/150 deal inflation, and I don’t know who wins. Is that paying for a 35 year old and getting production like a 30 year old, or is that signing a long(ish) term deal with a 30 year old who’s already playing like he’s 35?

Well Belli’s been injured a lot more, and his power wasn’t a thing a year ago. Had a great contract year batting behind Judge. Springer’s a better player.

Springer was like 4th or 5th in mvp voting. He was a lot better than Belli at the plate

  • You get nothing! You lose! Good day, sir!

    You're a crook, you're a cheat and a swindler...! That's what you are!

    Cubs heavy breathing

You'll get nothing and like it!

  • Bellinger isn’t that good that we should overpay. He isn’t worth negotiating with at his level of play

  • When was the last time Buster Olney or Jon Heyman first-reported something, and weren’t just obvious agent mouthpieces?

Heyman was first on reporting Arson Jusge to the Giants

Sports reporting has turned into a joke the past 15 years.

  • I mean if you’re not gonna do anything else to improve the team other than that, don’t bother.

At this stage I’d rather see what Jones has, make a move or move on. Bring up Rumfield if you need to backup 1B.

Flanking Judge with Grisham and an unproven OF is asking for trouble. If a deal for Bellinger or Tucker doesn't materialize, they need to dive quickly into the trade market and at least get someone who can platoon with whichever young OF makes the team. Can't have yet another potential hole in the lineup

I think the point is Bellinger isn’t the difference between this team and the World Series. If he’s the only move they are going to make, might as well just let him walk.

  • Call his bluff, bellinger isn’t the type of player a team will willingly over pay for.

  • Fuck Boras, man.

  • this is one of those times i'm not mad at the FO.

if there's a sizeable gap, it's because Boras is asking the moon for a very good but not great player and other teams are also not going for it.

the fact that the Cubs and Mets/other real contenders aren't being mentioned here (and we're hearing "the Yankees want to retain Bellinger") indicates the Yankees are making the most serious efforts in the negotiations, and Boras is likely asking for something silly

  • Cody Bellinger is 3 seasons removed from him hitting a combined .188 avg with .598 ops over the 2021 & 2022 seasons

If he is capable of having bad seasons in his mid 20s; imagine him in his mid 30s

I am ok with the Yankees not willing to go over 5 years

Bellinger was hurt doing those seasons, including a serious leg and shoulder injury that affected his swing. Those two years are clearly outliers in an otherwise great career.

Injuries never resurface as you age into your 30s

    He was injured

Exactly. This is l Lemahieu/Hicks/Rizzo/Donaldson all over again and its so obvious.

  • Now what’s the gap between him and other teams interested in him?

  • Gee. Could this be a leak from Boras? He wouldn't do such a thing would he?

I will applaud the FO if they stand pat. I want Belli back but not for more than a 5 year deal.

But yeah, this shit is getting very old

  • Let him go literally who cares

  • Dear god...MOVE ON. This man got traded for peanuts last year and now wants sum unrealistic deal for like 7 years?MOVVVVEEEE ONNNNNN. Acting like this man is Ronald Acuna or sum shit

  • If Cashman was the GM of a small market team, people would see just how bad of a GM he is

  • Can they just call Boras’s bluff at this point? Doesn’t seem like any other teams are as seriously in on him.

  • Not worth whatever Borass is asking for

  • Let’s just watch Grisham for a season.

  • I don't think he is going to age well and we will get stuck with another awful contract for a guy in his 30s. Just walk away.

  • feels like bellinger’s itching to leave us for like an extra $5 mil aav in the open market

  • I know this is the Yankee sub, but everyone here would be wise to understand that means there's a wide gap between Bellinger and all 30 teams, otherwise someone would've signed him by now. This isn't just Hal and Cash being cheap.

  • If hes holding out for like $30-$40 million a year theres no way a team pays that unless its on a super short deal

  • Just let him walk. He’s not the difference between a World Series win and another above .500 season. If they sign him to a long term deal, he’ll be an impediment to NOT being able to win a World Series in the future quicker than he’d ever be an asset in winning one

  • Let him go and sign Tucker. Enough games

  • Belli is worth only 10mil less than Judge?? Boras has gone mad

  • It seems like the plan is run it back with maybe a different Marlins career 4 ERA guy added to the team. There's really nothing exciting about that to me. This is the same team that was outscored 21-0 in the first 15 innings of the ALDS against our AL East rival. That series was pretty much over after the first 2 innings. See you at the October crap shoot I guess. I havn't been this MEH about a Yankee season in my entire life.

  • Quite the struggle to run back a team that lost the Division Series in 4 and is only adding Cole's reconstructed arm.

I pretty much agree with this but the mildly optimistic case is:

    • Run differential and FanGraphs’ luck metric pegged us 5 wins better than our record
    • McMahon and Doval were nice additions and will be back. We were 35-19 after the deadline.
    • Rice has breakout potential and Schlittler could legit be very good.

This is all to say, I wouldn’t be thrilled but if they bring Belli back and add an innings eater starter I’d probably manage to get my hopes up.

  • Pass on Belli if he remains greedy. Let's see what Grisham, Jones, Judge, Rice and Jazz will do. Freddy Peralta will  be more reliable than Rodon. Trade Gil, Volpe and Martian. Donate Stanton to anyone. He has been bad luck for the Yankees since the signed him. Oh, check on getting Devers for third base to take his revenge on Boston. Doval is just as bad as was Mark Leiter. Use him in trade package. Cashman has really messed up this Yankees team looking for bargain players to win a World Series title. Never realized that you must have three ace pitchers to win, and Boone gets out managed often. Sorry that Judge's window is almost gone. Blame Cashman. Mookie Betts already has 3 rings.

  • Lots of Want To's but no actual Doing. Thats the Cashman way.

  • I wish they’d sign Tucker instead

  • We know Olney, we know. But thanks for the rehash great reporting.

  • Seeing as he has not signed elsewhere I bet nobody wants to meet the years and like always the Yankees are competing against themselves. Given the IFA news that is coming out I would not be shocked if Cashman makes a stupid overpay here just to say he did something and give the Yankees news cycle anything else to cover.

  • Boras client… he’s the worst agent to work with by a mile.

  • This is it, this is official the most insignificant, "no fucking shit," tweet in regards to a team trying to sign a player with not a shred of actual news attached to it of all time

  • Think we knew this Buster

  • Bellinger: I'd like $200M no matter how it's structured. 4 years, 5 years, 6 years, 7 years, whatever- I want $200 million. I don't want to give you guys a token $5M discount or something either. I just want $200M and I'll sign.

Yankees: We'd like you to pay us to play baseball.

  • MLB needs a way to prevent the offseason from dragging on this long. Like after a certain amount of time you cant sign mega deals after the new year so we get exciting news faster.

They should do like in Soccer and have a window of a certain length, lets say a month or six weeks.

Go on, how does it work?

Using England as the example there is the preseason window and that is two months or three months and the midseason window is open for a month. I would probably make that two months too and end it the day the trade of the trade deadline.

And in this scenario I think trades would be ok when the window is closed.

it's a total non-starters and would never happen but it's an interesting thought exercise.

Good luck trying to get the MLBPA to agree to that

  • Not to say Belli shouldn’t get paid but non-Soto Boras clients haven’t exactly been getting good results

  • Enough! Move on!!

  • If we’re going to overpay for anyone, it should be Tucker. And I say that as a huge Belli fan that would be thrilled to see him back on a reasonable deal.

  • I honestly think we’re past the point this should have been allowed to drag to. I like Belly, I want him back. He’s not at the level that should have held up our overall team building. He’s just not.

  • Just put this is the weekly thread:

Is it frustrating yes, annoying yes, but wouldn’t you want him to do the same if he was your agent as an athlete. This is more on the yanks being stuck on their offer(which I agree with) but also the Yankees fault for putting all their eggs in the Bellinger basket while there are other ways this team can get better without Bellinger

  • this might be the 9th time this has been reported

  • Now would be the time to tell Boras to get bent and pivot to Tucker, but this organization is arrogant and stupid so they’ll either cave or not get either and try to sell us on Dominguez and Jones playing every day.

  • I mean who else is going to pay him what he wants? That’s what’s going to define his market

  • I stand by just walking away from the table. Let Boras swing and miss again. Belli isn't Juan Soto, and even if they sign him it doesn't seem like we're doing anything else anyways so don't get locked into a long term deal with an aging player

  • I may be down voted here and oh well, but is belli really worth a whole lot of cash at this point in his career? Yes he had a great season with yankees but other than his dodger map days he has not been alll that. So I would hate to see yankees throw a large contract his way and he ends up like cubs belli.

  • If he wants over 30mm aav then he has to be under 5 years, or have team opt outs. I just don't see how this works otherwise.

What could his camp realistically be at?

  • Reports like these are annoying because either side could be the silly side or both.

Only real news is that they are talking.

  • I can understand Cashman not wanting to go more than 5 years considering he got burned by Hicks and D.J.

  • Just cut it and be on the way

  • There always is

  • Alonso getting 5/150 made the Tucker and Bellinger negotiations harder than necessary.

  • The sizable gap is pay me based on last year vs pay me based on the inconsistent body of my work lol

  • There's really no update. It just is what it is for now. At his age and given his production, Bellinger isn't the type of you go above and beyond to secure. The problem is Judge is 34 and we really need a legitimate LF and another bat in the lineup. We're running out of time with Judge, but I don't think the Yankees operate with that mindset. I don't even know if they care that much whether he wins a title during his prime. I'm sure they care, but I don't think they care the way fans do.

  • What would a reasonable contract for Belli look like?

  • I hope the Yankees are at least entertaining the idea of signing Tucker as a replacement. He's probably waiting for Bellinger to set the price and ask for more, but he's someone that would be worth it to sign for extra years.

  • I wish they would include what each side is asking for…that would be more informative than this drivel. Obviously there is “apparently a gap”. If there weren’t, he be signed by now. And this dude gets paid handsomely to report that. What a country!

  • I think its pretty blatant at this point that we're not getting him

  • You can't do dat, Blaine!! Over my dead cold sausage shake you offer dat. A little bit racist, but I think it's good for me and you can get a hold of me if you want to talk to me.

  • gonna be highly annoyed if boras fucks over cody like he did snell the first time. snell would have been a yankee if it wasnt for boras dicking around

  • This is all boras game...yea he's great for getting players paid but Im tired of this shit every fucking off-season with any of clients. It's fuckin exhausting between front office puppets and boras puppets putting out fake rumors and other shit to drive costs in their direction

But now it seems like FOs are tired of his shit too. Like didn't last season 3 of his bigger name clients not get signed by ST?

Like I said, I'm tired of this being every single off-season

  • If anyone else was going to seriously outbid us it’d be clear by now imo.

Feel like this ends with us adding a 6th year at a marginally lower AAV and calling it a day. 6/160 maybe, idk I’m bad at valuations.

  • Get Tucker instead of this home/away wonder.

  • Ok, hows about just post when something actually happens?

  • Omfg man were never winning a world series with this same old weak ass strategy

  • Move on. Bellinger isn't getting that many years and if he does, the last three years will be a dead contract for someone else.

  • Hal, please remember Soto and get this done!

  • Here we go again with Cashman’s bs approach to player negotiations - it’s always the same with him to try to get a player to accept a low ball offer - you want to much and we already have a replacement in mind so we will be fine without you. The player reps are all stealing his signs! The problem is he loses the best players year after year. If he does the same thing again this year he should go too!

  • The whole argument I keep seeing about how the team doesn't need to make drastic moves since they won 94 games last year and had the best record in the AL is growing increasingly dumb with Hal's stubborn frugality. The Blue Jays probably aren't done and have already improved their team. Anyone who thinks the Yankees still come out on top rolling out the same team is in for a rude awakening in September. Give Bellinger what he wants.

Without Belli they are a much lesser team than last year and much much much lesser team than the Jays and probably the Sox, O's and maybe Rays

They’re gonna get rolled with bellinger might as well let him walk to not get saddled with a bad contract

  • Belli knows the Yankees need him. They haven't landed anyone this winter and he is a loss by subtraction if they don't resign him.

  • Does this mean Bellinger has a better offer on the table or not? If no other team is willing to close the gap then why should the Yankees budge on their offer?

  • Aka Boras called Cashman bluff on Bichette being a fall back plan.

It’s January and Boras has yet to find a team to even get close to his demands, I’d say his bluff is being called right now too.

  • Move on. Pivot to Bichette

  • Cody knows the ball is in his court at the moment but that could change. Depends on how many suitors he has competing with yankees offer.

But my guess is he is probably not getting the years and/or money he wants elsewhere either. I think hes expecting other teams to blow yanks out of water and its just not happening. I mean if the Yankees offer turns out to be 5 years @ 22 million a year and he goes to the Mets for 6 years at 24 million a year, he never really wanted to be here in the first place. At some point you weigh in the franchise and treatment with the money. Hes going to get paid. I just dont understand why they try to hold out constantly to get top dollar when you already have generational wealth. Open up a fucking investment calculator and realize if you invested just a couple million today it turns into tens of millions over the next 30 years

  • Yanks setting up the media to make it seem like they’re making an effort for when he eventually goes somewhere else. They’re trying to make him sound unreasonable. These reports are not good signs.

  • I don’t understand why this is still being talked about because belli is not coming back to the Yankees. The team, as it is constituted, today is essentially the team that will open the season.

  • How many times has this been reported?

  • Is this not exactly what was posted yesterday?

  • Must be a slow news day for them to repeat themselves to us

  • I’m well aware how much my August of this year self would slander this comment, but you think about walking away at some point.

It’s boras. It’s going to be too many years and too much money for what amounts to a “good” player at a valuable position of need.

With the way Hal does the accounting on payroll, won’t you want that $30M to get an actual star in a year or 2?

What does Bellinger 3 hole next year really get you? How does it age?

  • I’ll assume this is exactly why they were comfortable bringing back Grisham. Judge RF, Grish CF, Jasson LF. In this scenario they have to upgrade in the infield then, right? Need another bat, right? Right?

  • Good for cashman. Problem with playing chicken w/boras though is he will wait it out betting on the “one dumb owner rule”. And there’s a good chance that will happen. Problem with that though, is poor belli could wind up in Anaheim or Colorado (or flushing 😆)

  • The question is when will Cashman deploy the take it or leave it option and then we'll see who really is bluffing.

  • What Scott Boras wants they mean. Bellinger is a decent player but he hasn't put together two good seasons without j a row AND the dodgers non- tendered him a couple years back, and to top it off he got traded by the cubs for a scrub like Cody Poteet.

Nah this is all Boras and his bull shit. Yanks should walk away and sign tucker instead of wasting time like this.

  • Has anyone else made an offer? Does seem like a typical Bellinger FA period?

  • yankees sign no one confirmed
