I got an identical injury in the exact same place while working in a bar. I was polishing a wine glass, it broke in my hand, slashed right through that area and I had to get stitches. It was a super busy shift and I was just dripping blood in front of loads of horrified people lol.
Yoooo when i was like 9 putting away dishes, a glass dropped that i was putting up high. I swung my hand down fast to catch it and did but i didnt stop my momentum and smashed it into the counter. I panickdd and clenched a bunch of the glass in my fist. Somehow made away with only 1 scare. Nice big gouge in 1 of my fingers only somehow
I used to work in the hospital and would occasionally get stuck with needles and other sharp objects that the nurses and doctors would carelessly toss into the regular trash. While I never required stitches from them, I would often get strong antibiotics to combat any infectious diseases that were in the hospital.
Edit: This was 40+ years ago. Ive been tested and retested for any and all things possible. I'm good, but at the time it was very scary,
I cut the backs of both my ankles pretty deeply when the heavy trash bag bounced against them as I was walking. Big tomato soup can lid was loose in the bag. 🙃
Anyone willing to admit they don’t know something and are willing to ask despite the potential of looking “stupid” is exhibiting signs of true intelligence, and the desire to grow and learn.
Stupid would be to not know, and be too scared to ask in order to know, and remain willfully ignorant.
I’m not defending the person that threw broken glass into their trash at all, but i just can’t imagine doing OP’s friends job without using gloves. Garbage is dirty and gross as it is, I wouldn’t bare hand it all day every day.
as a bar back i’ve been forcing the bartenders to either throw the trash themsleves or i’m not taking shit if they aren’t double bagging it when i’m not there and aren’t being safe with glass. I’ve been the only one to not get a slice and i’m keeping it that way :)
Not sure when this was taken, if it’s old then please ignore. From personal experience with hand lacerations and from medical experience he may need more stitches. Hands tend to be one of the hardest areas to stitch due to the amount we use them. A small 1in laceration could take 7-9 stitches to keep them from tearing. They try to use less now because of budget and everything but I would have personally thrown in at least double the current number and had them spaced closer together.

Fuck, recently i started cutrling myself with tiny glass fragments from dropped and broken glasses. Just tiny pieces cause so much trouble cant imagine what your pal touched… get better!
I’m a bartender/barback. This is why there should always be a specific glass bin to prevent this type of thing. In the UK at least it’s enforced quite well.
Not to that degree but that happened to me when a giant tomato sauce can at this pizza place I worked at had put the open can on the top of the bag right where you grab it and got near the tendon
That sucks - ugh! It does look more like they pushed the bag down though and got sliced by a bottle? Not sure how just tossing a bag could result in that...unless they didn't grab it by the top? (More for anyone who might be in a similar position of tossing a bag, trying to understand better how it happened to avoid it)
Damn that’s a gnarly gash.
Looks a bit like baseball glove. Gnarley.
That’s what he said!
You should call her.
I see you’ve met my ex..She was a Gnarly Gash..
Everything reminds me of her

That’s wildly illegal disposal of needles. They’re supposed to go into sharps containers to avoid exactly this scenario
Yes they are.
How careless of them and scary for you! Wtf
Yeah antibiotics would do shit for many diseases you can get that way.
Definitely want to be going for hepatitis and HIV testing. I would think bacteria are the least concerning pathogen from a needle stick lol.

Ouch, straight out of a horror movie.
Oh those metal can lids are like razor blades!
That scar is gonna freak out any future palm readers.
What a badass scar for later though. Glad it wasn't worse! Get better OP!
Just a heads up, OP says it was their best friend not them in the post
Welp, then get better OP's bestie! Make sure to help them tug it out, thats what besties are for!
Images like this make my balls crawl back up inside! OUCH!
Yall don’t have a glass bucket or somewhere specific to put broken glass????
Glad he’s OK.. That was a nasty cut!
That is gonna be a bad ass scar with a "trashy" story. ;) ;)
Soft hands.
Same shit happened to me but it was Yuban coffee can cut in half that got thrown out and it sliced my forearm
That will make for a sick scar
This is why broken glass buckets exist
Tis but a scratch
This is why I don’t drink beer. Only for this.
Ow
Are the weird stringy things veins? I'm dumb asf, I'd like to know
Just blood soaked gauze!!!

made my hand cringe, hope he makes a full recovery.
One of the downsides of customer service. We literally put our bodies at risk, yet we have to deal with Karen.

Do they not have bottle bins?
Jesus

smh
Better think up a badass backstory for the scar.
This is horrible thank you
Hells bells you have been in the wars. That looks very OUCH! Wishing you a speedy recovery.
horrible
God damn that looks brutal

Oh, that is a horrendous gash. Nice job suturing. Hope he is healing nicely.

“Licked by a broken beer bottle” is the wildest statement I’ve heard in a long time
Sorry!💕

my face actually hit a D: when I clicked on the thumbnail
Did you try putting hydrogen peroxide maybe that will fix it
I had this happen to my leg back in the 80’s . Broken bottle from the bar and nobody said anything .
Thats an ultimate lick! I hope it was a good branded bottle at least!
I wanted to see the tendon wtf

Stitches seem excessive. Two, maybe three bandaids would’ve sufficed
Should’ve recycled, bitch!
