I picked up a remodel job for a crematorium. I redid the fire brick, concrete bed and insulation. I wish I got to take pictures but I understand why the owner didn’t want that. It was a fascinating process, his cooler could fit like 20 bodies. When he opened the door, it was just remnants of bone and skull. Watching the smoke come out of the chimney was a little weird but cool at the same time.
Kinda funny story, while we were there, the owner was cremating a 600lbs or so dude. He started a grease fire and burned up the hydraulics. Some smells you only get to experience once.
My father in law and sister in law were cremated. They were both over 400 lbs. I remember hearing that they needed "extra time to process." The morbid part of me makes me think of a slow roast.
I get a little emotional seeing the hands and eyes of the deceased..those hands were taken cared of..held and loved..those eyes have blinked..slept..and seen..but now..they’re gone forever..
Wow these are really amazing. I worked at a funeral home for a few years and it was always interesting to see all the faces and think about the lives they led, and now they’re just a lifeless shell. Really helps to give you perspective.
these images are so morbidly beautiful & well-photographed, very modern seems unreal that these are from 1992!! checked out his other works too, very intriguing
Morbidly fascinating.

Beautiful and sad
These are fascinating. Does anyone know of any similar photo collections like this one? :)
There is another very similar Morgue series from the ‘70s which I have a photobook copy of, by Jeffrey Silverthorne. Again, morbidly fascinating.

Oh, Death of Marat. Yeah that’s a good one. I think of it anytime I’m feeling dry or ashy.
Or anytime I see some bullshit NY Times article that’s like, “Are billionaires really the bad guys?”
Joel peter witkin !
Thank you so much!
Woahh thanks
Interesting photos, the last one looks like a sleeping angel (not trying to sound weird).
Pic #5...the one who was burnt. Dd y'all see the screw @ neck...?!
Yes, from the building and furniture around them collapsing in the fire.
Beautifully morbid
“Blood transfusion resulting in AIDS” wow.
strangely beautiful
For the last one, I didn’t know they could start the Y incision that high, especially if there was a funeral
Oh wow its the piss Christ photographer
Why is the Y incision made?
Easier to open and view the thorax. Also, easier to suture up.
I guess it's the lighting that makes these photos beautiful and tragically sad at the same time.
This series inspired me to become a funeral director. I was in art school at the time.
The faces of death
It reminds me of Peter Joel Witkin's montages and his photos of corpses or parts of corpses
Just a matter of time.
I get a little emotional seeing the hands and eyes of the deceased..those hands were taken cared of..held and loved..those eyes have blinked..slept..and seen..but now..they’re gone forever..
These will haunt my head forever I love them
These are stunning
This is real?
Link doesn’t work for me. 😞
I can send you the series if you want
So this is art? Are the bodies real? I’m confused
The bodies were real, though anonymous (John/Jane Does), and Serrano received official authorization to photograph them

His religious photos are worth a look, too.
Anything more regarding that Jane Doe?
That last one could be a Greek statue
I don’t want to die
Idk what to say, but woahh

The first woman looks so familiar in some way…this is so sad :(
Regarding the first Pic. Is her Name actually Jane Doe or sadly not yet known?
