The funniest thing about this entire saga is the fact that everyone was so certain this decision was out of spite, that Carl saying on multiple occasions it wasn't is completely dismissed. He's apparently only a reliable narrator if he's angry.
That he was heartbroken and a bit disillusioned with how '16 ended, and some of that factored in along with his true health concerns? Or that he quit in a rage because he knew stage racing and lower HP were coming, so he wanted to spite NASCAR and become a farmer?
The first hasn't really been argued, the second one is what's become canon despite what Carl actually says again and again.
Personally, I think it's because he knew that people would be allowed to wreck him whenever and whereever, and each of those wrecks were getting more and more dangerous, and NASCAR was doing next to nothing about it. He knew if he stayed, he'd die and the footage of it would be replayed over and over to sell the sport. At very most, if he was lucky enough to not die, he'd have long term brain damage. I don't think it was out of spite, but just the realization that this wasn't how he wanted to go.
His wife is a sports medicine doctor, she probably told him all about how bad this could get.
I remember someone spoiling this rumor a few weeks before saying "a veteran who won this year is retiring immediately" and people thinking it was Kurt Busch. That helped soften the blow for me as I probably would've had a much more severe physical reaction if I was completely blindsided by it. I still fell out of my chair though
Cousin Carl was my guy for 13 years. I've still got PTSD symptoms from that mic drop presser. No warning, no farewell tour.......no shit!?!? He's actually leaving!?! Hope he stays involved with the broadcast side this season.
