I defended him for a while when the only controversial thing about him was his past, saying you can't judge someone by their family, and that he's the one billionaire who cares about humanity and believes he can leverage capitalism to make the world better for everyone.

Those 2 sets of information aren't necessarily incompatible.
They could have had extra staff on duty beyond the current normal staffing duties post DOGE cuts.
Even if the warning was given 12 hours prior, a larger team with more resources might have been able to deliver the warning earlier than that, may have been able to deliver subsequent updates better (the 3 hour warning), and May have been better prepared to follow up with local authorities that didn't appear to be listening to the warnings.
A larger, more equipped team would be Better able to provide the most accurate estimations possible and would be more trustworthy on those estimates than a team that everyone knows has been compromised.

We have no idea what core commands these AIs have behind the scenes nor how they were trained.

Texas counties including the ones affected most badly, don't have an emergency alert system. Officials post messages to Facebook.
Poor environmental management - in some cases none at all - allow people to build anything, anywhere, even in flood zones. As Texas gets more and more built out, there are just so many stupid things being done - building neighborhoods in low-lying flood areas - see Houston floods last year. Allowing a kids camp to be built in the flood control area around a river - etc.
A government that is entirely callous towards managing risk. No one cared, No one will care in a week. Texas doesn't care about it's citizens at all and never will.
The NWS plays a role, as do other Federal agencies, but they are just shouting into a void. Warnings that go nowhere, concerns that go nowhere. Alerts that are ignored.

I agree. Many people don't overcome their circumstances either due to nature or nurture. I defended him for a while when the only controversial thing about him was his past, saying you can't judge someone by their family, and that he's the one billionaire who cares about humanity and believes he can leverage capitalism to make the world better for everyone.

Those 2 sets of information aren't necessarily incompatible.
They could have had extra staff on duty beyond the current normal staffing duties post DOGE cuts.
Even if the warning was given 12 hours prior, a larger team with more resources might have been able to deliver the warning earlier than that, may have been able to deliver subsequent updates better (the 3 hour warning), and May have been better prepared to follow up with local authorities that didn't appear to be listening to the warnings.
A larger, more equipped team would be Better able to provide the most accurate estimations possible and would be more trustworthy on those estimates than a team that everyone knows has been compromised.

And this is actually possibly the greatest danger of LLMs. It adds another layer between the source of information and the user - a really opaque layer to boot and a layer that costs so much to run that only a select few will be able to control it. We have no idea what core commands these AIs have behind the scenes nor how they were trained.
In theory old school google search was already that layer and could i.e hide links they didn't want you to see - but it couldn't blatantly change what the websites it linked to said for instance or pull new bullshit out of it's arse or be intentionally trained to produce certain answers the same way - so LLMs are a significant step up danger ladder in this aspect I feel. Besides that search engines are a much lower cost venture, so there's theoretically a lot more competition.

What people don't understand is that there are many things that are not profitable that still benefit the lives of so many people.
Conservatives will have you believe that if government stops doing these things, some private corporation will swoop in to take that role and it will be better somehow.
But the truth is that no private entity will take on these important roles unless it makes a profit. Government HAS to do these things because nobody else will.

But I haven’t seen a direct quote from NOAA meteorologists saying, ‘We underestimated rainfall or delayed alerts because there weren’t enough of us or enough funding.’ Can we find any internal memos, interviews, or whistleblower accounts that make that explicit connection?

Yes, I’m as upset at the NWS cuts as the next guy, but according to the local NWS in charge of this area, at this time they were not understaffed. Sometimes freak natural tragedies happen.

Right, the problem here is so much more than "we don't have enough people during a crisis".
The problems are really deep:
Texas counties including the ones affected most badly, don't have an emergency alert system. Officials post messages to Facebook.
Poor environmental management - in some cases none at all - allow people to build anything, anywhere, even in flood zones. As Texas gets more and more built out, there are just so many stupid things being done - building neighborhoods in low-lying flood areas - see Houston floods last year. Allowing a kids camp to be built in the flood control area around a river - etc.
A government that is entirely callous towards managing risk. No one cared, No one will care in a week. Texas doesn't care about it's citizens at all and never will.
The NWS plays a role, as do other Federal agencies, but they are just shouting into a void. Warnings that go nowhere, concerns that go nowhere. Alerts that are ignored.
Ultimately, if your government doesn't care about people, you just get people dying all the time, time after time, and nothing will change. And that ultimately is because "Texas nice" is a sick lie.
Texans don't care about other people. They don't even care about their neighbors. They don't care about strangers, they don't care about their own health.

IT wasn't just the DOGE cuts(some of which still haven't even taken effect), it was years, even decades, of mismanagement from the county all the way up the chain.
Was there more to be done that night or even in the days before from the NWS that could have happened without DOGE? I am sure there were. Would those have changed the outcome all that much? Probably not.
I don't think the cuts are directly responsible, the 30% budget cut hasn't even started yet. This is on Texas itself.
