Something I've noticed in WAY too many productions, is a character asking an important, blunt or obvious question and another character answering in a clearly unconvincing manner. Example: "You're not still in love with John, are you?" "What? (puts on confused face, hesitates and replies without making eye contact) N...no, no, of course not." In a wavering fashion. I get the actor is supposed to convey lying, being uncomfortable about it, and to show the struggle within/coming to terms with said situation, but it always comes across as SO obviously lying. To the point where it's laughable and takes me RIGHT the hell out of the narrative. STOP doing this. Just have your character flatly lie. We've been following the story, we KNOW they're in denial.....find a better way to convey that.
I don't know if that's bad acting or bad directing but I know what you mean.
