My favorite movie of all time, really disheartening to see it's relatively low ratings on the internet.
Looking for movies that are normal guys everyday lives mixed in with fun unrealistic scenarios.
What I love about the film is, it's a film where a guy goes on an adventure, learns to live life and meets a bunch of compassion filled quirky individuals. It's a really wholesome, feel good movie that doesn't particularly care about being "realistic" its a movie that owns its goofiness. I mean he plans on jumping into a volcano as a sacrifice because the islanders have fallen in love with orange soda and no longer will participate in tradition.
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen
Hudsucker Proxy
Yes! Love this movie, but many people have heard of it
You know, for kids.
I think I'll go with the double stitch......
Shaun of the Dead
Hot Fuzz
The World’s End
Stranger than Fiction reminded me of Joe Versus the Volcano. Not as funny but both are great flicks!
Big Fish - 2003 - Ewan McGregor - This one fits "normal guys everyday lives mixed in with fun unrealistic scenarios"
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty - Is also another one. Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller), an employee at Life magazine, spends day after monotonous day developing photos for the publication. To escape the tedium, Walter inhabits a world of exciting daydreams in which he is the undeniable hero.
Which are all acted out in the Movie
True Memoirs of an International Assassin - 2016 - A mild-mannered author is mistaken for an assassin after his novel about a hired killer is published as a true story. He is soon kidnapped and taken out of the country to help with an assassination plot. - The movie acts out the the things he writes about, hard to tell what's real or being written
sorta... The Truman Show
Sorry to Bother You
That is one crazy movie, the opening scene is a classic, worst job in the world---Meg Ryan in a triple role, is amazing, Ozzie Davis was great too
Some people today would kill for that job. Just saying. And on a side note, I know he can get the job but can he do the job?
I'm not arguing that with you
Joe’s Apartment.
Being John Malkovich
The Fisher King. I've seen a few other great suggestions from director Terry Gilliam, but this my personal favorite.
Moonstruck. Same writer!
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Interstate 60 (2002)
Forrest Gump. Not that many of the scenarios are unrealistic on their own but in combination with all the rest…
“I’m not arguing that with you!”
It’s my favourite film.
Edit to add movie suggestions that I haven’t seen yet: The Fall, Amelie, Midnight In Paris, About Time, Pleasantville, Toys.
Time Bandits
I am not in any way a religious person, but the scene with
Dear God, whose name I do not know - thank you for my life. I forgot how BIG... thank you. Thank you for my life.
makes my breath catch in my throat every time.
Strawberry Mansion.
Leans a little further into the surrealism than JvtV, but a good watch.
Pure Luck
Kajillionaire, it's a lovely movie
Mood Indigo
This movie will definitely tickle your surrealism funny bone.
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
Heath Ledger's last movie. Really liked this one.
Brazil (1985)
Magical realism?

Came to suggest Stranger Than Fiction and, as others have mentioned, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
I know he can get the job, but can he DO the job?
I'm not arguing that with you
I love the spirit of that movie.
Election
L.A. Story
Not sure these work but might be worth a look:
Napoleon Dynamite
Nacho Libre
Stranger than Fiction
and maybe The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
The 'Burbs, of course. Another Tom Hanks movie.
Punch Drunk Love
Some days in the life of main character that get quite surreal
Wanted (2008)
The Science of Sleep
Unicorn Store (2017)
I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK (2006)
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012)
Thinking more:
Penelope (2006)
The Brothers Bloom (2008)
The Blues Brothers (1980)
And then a few tv series by Bryan Fuller: Pushing Daisies, Wonderfalls, Dead Like Me
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller & Kristen With)
Salmon Fishing in Yemen (Ewan McGregor & Emily Blunt)
Danny Boyle’s A Life Less Ordinary
Dumb and Dumber
Never heard of it.
Excerpt from Ebert's 3.5/4 review on the film
"I had not seen this movie before. Most movies, I have seen before. Most movies, you have seen before. Most movies are constructed out of bits and pieces of other movies, like little engines built from cinematic Erector sets. But not “Joe Versus the Volcano.” It is not an entirely successful movie, but it is new and fresh and not shy of taking chances. And the dialogue in it is actually worth listening to, because it is written with wit and romance."
You should definitely check it out.
You seem like the sort who would appreciate it.
Wow I’ve never heard of this. Thanks for the introduction!
